Hey, does anybody know how many people apply for the Korea program? I’m thinking about applying for next year :P…
@Newdle I think maybe 200-300 and they end up narrowing it to about 30 people! (maybe fewer actually)
@stvika Thanks for the info!
Does anyone know what kinds of classes are offered at this program?
The FAQ section of the program states:
Can students with advanced skills in a NSLI-Y target language apply?
“Yes. However, since most NSLI-Y participants are at novice or intermediate levels, your class placement and your overall experience may differ from others in your group.”
It says my class placement may differ from others, but does that mean I would be separated from the group if I got in?
Also, I am basically a native Korean speaker (Korean-American/ lived in Korea when I was little) and I want to apply for the Korean program to learn more about Korean culture. Would this characteristic of mine be a disadvantage or an advantage?
@bboyinmartin not a disadvantage! i’m a native russian speaker but i got into the russian summer program this year im not sure which classes ill be put in but usually the city you go to depends on your proficiency (you don’t know beforehand which you’ll be sent to though) but you have to take some tests so they can put you in classes. you probably won’t be split up from your group.
Hey @stvika, I was interested in the Russian program too for next year. Congratulations on getting in! For the summer program on their website, it says something about Moscow’s ballet academy. They didn’t word it very well and I’m not sure if the ballet audition/participation is a requirement for the summer program? I’m very interested in the Russian summer program but the ballet part doesn’t sound too appealing to me.
For high schoolers (that are not seniors) taking any of the academic year program, how are you managing it? Do you graduate high school a year late, make up credits, or what do you do?
@geekygeek the ballet program is separate, you apply for that by submitting an audition or something like that. I’m doing the summer program so I actually can’t help you out with the year stuff but from what I’ve seen most people doing academic year are taking a gap year and the others are either taking their school courses over the summer before they leave and when they come back so they’re not behind. Sorry that’s all I know!
@stvika Great, so the ballet program is optional. I’m a boy so I don’t think ballet would be in my best interests. Russian is the only language on the list that really interests me. Thank you for your information! I’ll talk to my counselors to see what we can do if I do decide do an academic year.
@geekygeek good luck! Let me know how it ends up!
