I don’t know if the deadline was actually extended. My thought is that it might be some computer glitch or something, because the date on the instructions along with the date when you open the medical form, still says Feb 8. So I have no know idea what it means.
NSLI-Y Staff just posted the following on FB:
"Semi-finalists: We have not yet started the notification process. We are not able to provide individualized status updates; we’d appreciate if you did not request an exception to this policy by phone or email.
Our volunteers and staff work hard to ensure a fair selection process for our 3,000+ applicants and 1,400+ semi-finalists. The selection process is still ongoing. Please review the timeline for more details on what to expect!
As a reminder, the NSLI-Y medical evaluation is not considered during the selection process. We have allowed late forms to be submitted for extenuating circumstances, but that has not impacted the selection process.
This is indeed an exciting time of year for NSLI-Y as we prepare for upcoming programs. Thanks for your patience!"
And the wait continues…
1400 is significantly more semifinalists than usual, isn’t it? I remember reading that historically there were around 600 semi-finalists. Maybe the process is different this year.
@skrunch There’s about 600 finalists.
If I am not incorrect, I do believe that 600 is the average number of finalists. Last year, the number of semi finalists dropped to 1,200, but it was greater in previous years. I doubt that 200 applications will make a significant difference.
In addition, the increased number of semifinalists may reflect this year’s introduction of the Indonesian program and the Turkish program, which was dropped last year.
So no news as to when notifications will be?

Ultimately the only people who “know” are the actual program staff. Everything else is just speculation. They’ll begin notifications when they’re ready. It sucks to wait, but really that’s all there is to it.

hey! did anyone here apply to hindi summer? notifications for russian summer & hindi summer usually come out around the same time, so has anyone heard anything?

I just got accepted for Hindi summer!!!
It appears that those with no background knowledge of Russian are going to Moscow and Kirov, Russia, while those with some experience are going to Moldova, and those more advanced go to Estonia.
