NSLI-Y 2018 - 2019

Actually, my son was accepted to Estonia for summer at 4:17pm EST on 3/2. He is a sophomore and has been learning Russian since the beginning of freshman.

If anyone gets a notification today, let us know!

I got my notif today for the Russian summer program! I’ve been selected as an alt (which means that I will probably be stuck in a state of panic until May 15th, but honestly I’m just super thankful that I have not been rejected yet). Fingers crossed !!

@melsbells678 What time did you get your notification? That’s really exciting!

@katcatkat I got it at 4:25

Does anyone know about any groups on facebook or something like that for Chisinau, Moldova summer finalists or Russian summer finalists in general?

@gmwilson
Moldova summer alum here, and current Russian AY semifinalist (pm me if you have any questions)–a Facebook group and group chat has already been made for this year’s Moldova program! Check for the post on the Ask NSLI-Y Alumni Facebook group.

Stanford just canceled all student educational trips to Russia because of a State Department travel warning - will anything happen to the NSLI-Y programs?

@mclmom do you know why this travel warning was issued…??

This happened a several years ago with the Arabic program, and they moved it out of Egypt. NSLI-Y will not put kids in jeopardy, IMO.

For anyone looking into a language program this summer, the STARTALK listings are now available! There are many programs across the country for all of the NSLI-Y languages and a few more.

Any Arabic notifications out yet?

Hi all, I just wanted to update you. My first choice was Turkish summer and my second was Hindi Summer. Today (March 12) I received a notification of acceptance from nsliy saying that I will be going to Indore, India this summer. There was no mention of my first choice on the email which leads me to believe the Turkish programs have been suspended for 2018-19 because why else would I receive an acceptance email for hindi two weeks after the others received their acceptances?? NSLI-Y hasn’t explicitly stayed anything about the suspension of the Turkish programs, so it very well might still be up and running. Opinions?

Congratulations to all those selected as finalists! Has anyone heard from Bahasa?

While you’re probably on the right track, until NSLI-Y releases a statement that they suspended the Turkish program, I wouldn’t make any assumption about it.

Despite placing Turkish as a first choice, there may have been information in your application that suggested India would be a better placement for you, whether health-wise or culture-wise. This isn’t super common, but it happens. Or perhaps enough other finalists did not decide to accept the scholarship and a spot opened up that made sense for you to fill.

Hopefully you’re not to bummed about not getting your first choice. At the end of the day it really doesn’t matter where you go :slight_smile:

Hi! I chose the Turkish Summer program as my only choice because when writing the essay I didn’t know how to support why It was important for me to go to the other programs. I am a semi finalist and have gotten no notifications. Because I didn’t pick a second choice, should I be worried?

Have any acceptances gone out to Turkish program? I think DC was Turkish first, Russian second. If Russian is already filled and no Turkey, I wonder what will happen?

Those who have received finalist notifications…did something also appear in your portal (like the semi-finalist notices did) or was it in email only?

Yeah, NSLI-Y did suspend the Turkish program. they stated on their website just recently that the program was canceled.

@mhillia06 how do you know that? It doesn’t say anything on their website.
