Hello! I’m semifinalist for korean summer and i had my interview yesterday! Some tips i’d give are to stress on how much you want to learn the language, how you will use it your future and instances where you interacted with other cultures. Remember to have confidence! Its not too bad, just walk in with honesty and passion. Also, ask them questions because they are most likely alumni from other programs or they’ve studied abroad themselves. Best of Luck!
Howdy y’all! I had my interview yesterday (Mandarin summer). I had 2 interviewers, both were super nice. Be prepared to talk about future use of your language! Also, please talk to the other applicants! It’s good to get to know your peers and they appreciate it. Also! Is there a WeChat for the Mandarin summer applicants??
@chrysalism Same here (Mandarin summer semifinalist and hasn’t been contacted yet). Best of luck!
If you join the Ask NSLI-Y Alumni page on Facebook you can connect with the other Mandarin applicants through WeChat.
Indonesia Summer Semi-Finalist, still haven’t been contacted. Do you think this is an error on their part? I’m supposed to email I think…
I know some regions in Florida still have not been contacted yet. However, you should definitely reach out to NSLI-Y just to make sure an email was not already sent out.
Hey does anybody know the acceptance rate between semifinalist and finalist? I think my interview went well-but just wanted to gage how competitive this round actually is.
I read somewhere that about 1/4-1/3 (up to 1/2) of the semifinalists become finalists. I can’t remember where I saw that though, and it could have been outdated information, so I would take that with a grain of salt.
How long are interviews usually? Also when do finalists notifications start rolling out?
Hi! I’m a Chinese Summer alum (Shanghai) and current AY semifinalist. Super excited!
Interviews can range from 30 minutes long to an hour. Finalists will be notified on a rolling basis starting in March and ending in April. Usually everyone applying to summer programs will be notified first and then the AY applicants.
Thanks!
Does anyone think that the coronavirus might cause a problem with the NSLI-Y AY China program? I’m starting to get a little concerned.
According to a NSLIY student on the “Ask NSLIY Alumni” page, students currently on China AY are being sent home from Chengdu and Beijing due to the coronavirus. If a program is ever canceled students are usually moved to their 2nd choices.
Makes sense. Thank you for the info!
The photos this year are optional right?
Yes, I believe the photos are optional.
