NSLI-Y (National Security Language Initiative for Youth) 2025-2026

I just got accepted to yes abroad. Trying to start an Instagram group chat with other finalists. Send me a DM if you want to get added!

Actually, not sure how DM’s work on here. Just add me on Instagram. @the_mnmjb

I got in as an alternate for FLEX and into YES Abroad! Anyone else going?

Me! What country?

Any Yes Abroad Thailand finalists out here?

I’m a YES Abroad finalist for Thailand!!!

I got Malaysia! What about you?

Congrats! Malaysia is such a cool country. I’ve never been, but I have family from there that really like it. I would’ve ranked it higher, but I don’t think we’re allowed to be placed in countries we have family in. :frowning:

I think (hope) that Korean Summer results should come out tomorrow because in previous years they have come out Thursday~Friday and about a week after all the other languages sooo maybe tomorrow??? Hopefully???

I think acceptances for Korean came out as I just got an email saying I’m an alternate. Does anyone know around how many alternates actually advance for each program?

I didn’t get anything- does that mean I’m probably rejected?

Yeah me neither. Idk if that means rejection but if the decisions are rolling then there’s still a chance

I would still hold out hope because my alternate email came out pretty late in the day and my last name (which is what I assume they’re sending them out by) is very high up in the alphabet

Did anyone else apply for the in-person NSLI-Y program and only get an email about the virtual program?
I’m trying to figure out if this is a deferral-type decision or if it might be a mistake. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same situation.

I didn’t get anything like that. I would definitely email them to confirm that the decision was for you. Did it mention your name in the decision at all such as in the greeting?

No it didn’t! Do the acceptances usually include your name? The email I got was clearly for a group of people and just included information on the next steps…

I applied for mandarin (in person) and got VSI, the virtual version of it for cohorts that would have been sent to China. One of the two emails I got had no name, as it was a general information email sent by the distributing organizationā€“ā€œDear AFS NSLI-Y Summer 2025 Mandarin VSI Finalists and Parents/Guardians,ā€ while the other had my name and was sent by american councils. Perhaps the second one might have been sent to spam or similar for you? My email didn’t mark it as important but marked the general information one as important.

No… I can’t seem to find the email from American Councils, but good to know that I’m not the only person who had this happen! I’m emailing the admin back and forth to double check. Have you already accepted your VSI spot, or are you also waiting to hear if there’s any chance for in-person?

I feel like most of the time it says:

Dear _,
We are pleased to inform you/Unfortunately we were not able to accept you…

And then sometimes it’ll say further applicant information at the bottom like for the semifinalist email for mine it had my last name and AIS ID.

But that email also came from American Councils not a distributing organization.
