Nurturing Medium size uni for av sudent + flute school

Does anyone recommend a university out of Wisconsin that has theses qualities. I have found the teachers but the school is too big or academic acceptance too high or too costly. I am an average student. I am looking to do a Music Major in flute/piccolo performance and I want to not be a number in a big college.

What is wrong with Lawrence? They are a fantastic school with good Financial Aid and strong academics. There conservatory is difficult to gain admittance to, but they fit everything (except they are in Wisconsin)

What about St. Olaf (MN) or Luther (IA)? Both have fantastic music programs, are small, have good fin aid and are not in Wisconsin.

I want to go more south where it is warmer east or west. Lawrence is for students with better grades.

One if my nieces is a music education major (her instrument is flute) at University of Northern Iowa. She’s an Illinois resident so UNI is out of state for her. Her grades were solid, but not spectacular.

Is money an issue? As it doesn’t sound like you’re a strong contender for merit money how much your family can spend needs to be a big part of making an OOS list.

In audition based programs, merit money is often supplanted by talent awards, based on the strength of the audition. Depending on institutional policy, a talent based award may negate, reduce or be in addition to any academic or stats based awards. It varies widely by school. Talent based awards range from a pittance to full tuition; on occasion a full ride for an exceptional performer at the top of the food chain.

OP, there is a separate CC forum for music majors http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/</a>. I’d suggest spending some time there. If you want to repost, and flesh out more detail there about your level of training, experience, it would help others in providing options.

Rice perhaps? They have a strong music program and it’s a nurturing environment, to say the least.

BMan22, Rice probably wouldn’t be a good choice for the OP, as they said that Lawrence would be out of reach for them, so Rice would definitely not be a realistic choice. On Northern Iowa, I don’t know anything about their music program, but my friend’s sister does go there and really likes it, if that helps. Good luck.

Willamette Univ. might be a good fit. It’s the right size and right degree of academic selectivity. And I don’t know specifically about flute, but it has a reputation for a strong Music program.
