Well, i am like 85% sure is it NUS…
HKUST and NUS are really not that different in quality so it is tough choosing. I had to look at other criterion which were:

Environment at Uni: Everyone speaks English in S’pore and it is more multi-ethnic. My college counsellor at school visited both places and thinks I will be happier in S’pore.

What to do after Uni: I think I want to work after B.Eng before deciding what to do further for my education, so S’pore has better job opportunities and salaries for foreigners.
But, if someone wants to directly go abroad (such as Cananda, US, UK, etc.) for Master’s I would suggest HKUST since there is no working bond in HK.
This is the advice a counsellor gave someone I know.

Other courses available: HKUST only has business, science and engineering related majors. NUS is a comprehensive uni with everything from music to medicine, so there are more options for electives if u r interested in that kind of stuff. But if u r just interested in science and business management and are not interested in arts, then HKUST is fine in this criterion.

Friends: well, this factor I dunno since other people I know r still waiting for NUS admission

Maybe, I’ll take NUS and go to HKUST for exchange, lol! That way I’ll get some of both!

@LordXXX…yea I got the mail bout the LPP classes…I might do a minor in management as well…nd yep, I’m done with my exams… finished last year… june-ish…I did the Cambridge A levels…wt bout u?

Btw, do we have to be in NUS from the 19th July onwards? That’s when orientation starts right? omg…that’s hardly a month from now…

Regarding the LPP, it’s only necessary if you’re going on exchange to countries in which the language of instruction is French/German/Korean. If you’re planning to go on exchange to an English-speaking country, then you’re not required to do the LPP (though there’s no harm in signing up anyway).

@LordXXX- Yeah I’m an international student, from Bangladesh. The workload for the double major is quite manageable, actually, and the best part is that whenever I get sick of one subject I can switch my attentions to the other You’ve to plan your modules pretty carefully though. And yes, you usually have to decide on your 2nd major/degree in your 2nd year, except for those double degrees which require you to apply earlier (say the double degree in Engineering and Economics).

Bidding for your modules is one of the stranger aspects of being a student at NUS. It can be enjoyable sometimes, when you’ve aced the system and are getting the modules you want (at the expense of someone else of course). But most of the time it will cause you a lot of pain and give you a stress-filled week before school starts. Again, that means you’ve to plan your modules well- make sure there are other modules which you’re ok with in case you can’t get your first-choice model.

@Pragmatist12: Even I prefer NUS because of the 3-year bond thing and you can always defer it so that you can work after completing your master’s and stuff. I also think the course at NUS is better structured…well, atleast for mech eng.
Yeah, even I’ll take an exchange to HKUST if there’s one :P

@Veraila: I finished my exams last year too…on a gap year right now. But I did Edexcel…much easier than Cambridge I think
Yeah the international orientation is on the 19th…but there’s also this english test or somethin which is on the 15th…but I think I’ll skip that and be in time for the orientation on the 19th. When are you planning to go?

@NBZ: I’ll apply for the LPP anyways. But I heard that these SEPs are really competitive and they also give a preference for the locals.

Yeah I think I might take a double major also…double degree might be a bit too much…

The bidding thing sounds fun…only thing is your education is at risk if you dont get what you want
So what is your view on the topic of this thread? NUS or HKUST?

Btw, havent you got exams right now? I know most evryone at uni has exams during this time…

Does anyone know how long the international orientation in NUS is gonna be? The website din’t provide much info. They just said start time and venue.

If it isn’t too long, I might as well fly home after that and come back in August.

By the way, take note that deferring the bond for further studies outside Singapore (there is no issue if you are planning to go for further studies within Singapore) is not straightforward- you’ll have to deposit a very large amount of money in the bank or sign an agreement that has to be guaranteed by two Singaporeans. So if you’re taking the tuition grant, it should be with the recognition that you will probably have to work directly after graduation and complete your bond, before you go for graduate studies abroad.

Don’t get too worried about the module bidding- as an engineering student, most of your modules will be preallocated to you. You will probably have to do bid for one or at most two modules every semester. It’s arts and science students who can get suckered by the system.

My exams finished a month ago- it’s vacation time now which is why I can afford to come here every evening :)

@pragmatist12: Thanks for checking on that…the intel orientation is just on a single day. Even I thought of doing the same thing but there’s gonna be the registration and stuff between 20-26 july I think…so it might be better to stay throughout. I mean its just a few days…so when are you gonna be there?

@NBZ: Well, I’ll see if I can get the bond deferred…if not, I’ll work…how hard is it to find work there? Does NUS help in any way in finding a job?

Btw, is the final year project in engineering done individually?

lol I see you’ve been around here since 2006…so what do you exactly do in here?

@LordXXX: As an engineer you should not have too many problems finding a job. You get some help from the Career Centre, and sometimes your department will help you find internships/jobs, but basically you’re on your own. As for the final year project, I believe it’s usually done individually (with supervision from a professor of course); I’m not sure if you can do it in a group.

CC was tremendously useful to me when I was applying to colleges back in 2006-07, which is why I still come back here sometimes and see how everything’s going.

hey
i got an offer from NUS for environmental engineering
but i dont think i will be taking up the offer as i feel environmental is too narrow for me and the kind of work it offers is not something i look forward to…
good luck to everybody on this thread and wish you the best in your future pursuits…
looks like i am headed to HKUST or delft university in the Netherlands…
cheers

@Anand78: Congrats on ur offer to NUS! Good luck wherever u decide to go!

@LordXXX: I think I will stay on in Singapore after the intl. orientation since there is only about one week after that till uni starts. How bout u? We all can plan sumthing to do during that time.

@NBZ: Thanks a lot for all that info, mate! Is it hard to get good internships and stuff?
Yeah, CC’s been a great help for me too :)

@Anand: Congrats on the offer but whts the use man…you wont be going anyway Still cant believe you applied for something you dont look forward to lol
Good luck with UST or DELFT :)

@pragmatist12: Yeah, thats wht I’ll be doing too…we can always find somethin to do during that time…visit the city, roam around in the campus lol whatever…
Dude we gotta find more people going to NUS…you know anyone?

I know a 3 ppl who applied (2 indians and 1 singaporean) but are still waiting to be accepted. They will probably know by mid-July, but NUS is not easy to get into, so dunno if they will get into the program of their choice…else they may go HKUST, HKU, Indian universities, etc. I too wish we knew more ppl. :S

Yeah, NUS is pretty hard to get into…most people I know havent got in or they havent got the course they want, like Anand over there
We must try and get more people in by creating a new thread or somethin…

@Veraila: I got in Prince George’s Residence type C single room…could not get into any of the 3 halls I had asked for. Same thing with LordXXX. What room did u get?

Have u made ur decision about which uni u will go to?

Btw, there is a FaceBook group titled NUS Class of 2014. So far, there r only 3 members. Do join in!

@pragmatist: Yea same here, I got into Prince George’s residence type C1…though I applied for the halls…there must be fewer rooms available in the halls…maybe they’re all already taken…and yea I’ve decided on nus:)…I’ll be flying to singapore next month…hope to meet you in orientation week!

@Veraila: lol I guess most of us get the PGP rooms…there about 3000 rooms in that thing. When will you be in Singapore? I think the intel orientation is on the 19th…

Btw, you guys confirmed your accomodation offers and paid the advance payment right? If you havent, do it fast or else you’ll lose that also…

@Lordxxx: yea, I really wanted to get into a hall though! :(…so much more activities…I’ll be in singapore somewhere early july-ish I think…hw bout you? Btw, are we allowed to keep musical instruments in our room?

Yeah, halls would have been more fun…but there are really limited hall places…its pretty unfair though They should have halls for evrybody…well, we’ll try to make PGP fun :P

I’ll be in Singapore on the 18th of July in time for the orientation bcoz I have to go to SL also…
About musical intruments…I’m not sure but I guess you can keep one as long as you have space…wht musical instrument are you talking abt??
