NYU Abu Dhabi

pleasant sigh everytime I read this thread im more convinced why I want to apply to NYUAD, love the fact that if I get admitted (and given the proper financial package of course) Ill be able to meet soo much people from around the world, opportunity ill never be able to have in my small town barranquilla …:D:D:D

yeah NYUAD is so brilliant-it can’t even be put into words. However I read all the comments regarding the New York Times article and MAN they were NASTY. It really bothers me reading them because it related to issues like oh “them damn arabs over there takin our pure americans and turnin em into terrorists who hate gays and think women are inferior!” I bet 80-90% of those people have never even been to the Middle East or studied it’s rich history. I mean the U.A.E. isn’t perfect, but it is making significant leaps in terms of becoming a cosmopolitan city of tomorrow that attempts to accept all regardless of race, religion or sex. There are evidently cultural differences but you will find that wherever you go and if things like that make you hate a country or project, then theres no way you’ll get very far in the increasingly globalized world.

@rainbowboywonder-stop being a thread ■■■■■.

@Reconquista: i was just flipping through pages…nice seeing you here HM
i assume you are on CUUS too?

Well one of the most significant features my city has is the great presence of arabs…not UAE arabs but mostly syrians, lebanese and palestinians…and all I have to say are good comments about them, perhaps i do not share lots of their ideas, but the crucial thing here its to be respectful and maybe not inmediately believe in others points of views, but at least embrace them and not think right away they are incorrect, i think that is what makes a good cosmopolitan citizen…

As a colombian citizen, i have experience the same type of comments by americans and other people, its really denigrating that in airports they take you aside and they even check your shoes in search for drugs, or you find people asking you what it is like to live in the jungle, why do I talk english or why if I’m colombian I’m “white”…

I guess the problem with those articles about NYUAD are because they are somehow jealous of the attention this new campus is receiving, especially in financial matters, as students in NYU New York Campus, do not receive as much money as people attending to NYUAD

So true NYUADhopeful! I read all the comments in that NYTimes article too. Shows kinda why we need such global enterprises to defuse all these stereotypes!!

I completely agree with nyuadhopeful. An AMERICAN university in the UAE is already a proof of a truly global university. Not to mention the students from around 40 countries all over the World. This international, cosmopolitan environment is what attracts me most. I am pretty sure there is no university in the World so far that would be a good analogue to NYUAD.

Okay people nothing personal, but I think that NYUAD is a great opportunity but of course, nothing is perfect in this world and I’m pretty sure there must be some faults in this venture, I guess we’ll have to experience in order to find them out. :)

@rainbowboywonder - its more likely to be the other way around with the recession still on. Faculty & staff from other colleges & univs are hoping to jump on to NYUAD pay rolls. Abu Dhabi is known for fat pay checks with no taxes. I wont be surprised if NYUAD attracted some of the best faculty from other univs. If they could get Mr Al Bloom from Swarthmore, i am sure faculty from even HYP are considering shifting to NYUAD. You are aware i am sure that endowments of many Univs have reduced significantly with this recession and some are laying off faculty & cutting down aid.

Its too early for problems in NYUAD as the hype & PR will be sustained by petro $$ and it will take a few years for real problems if any. Research projects from MAZDAR & the oil industry both of which have unlimited funding will keep NYUAD afloat for a long time.

Good money will attract a lot of smart people and research into areas other than oil & energy could also take off here if great facilities and funding are provided. Don’t be surprised of NYUAD end up being a big center for say Biotechnology or Neuroscience or alternative energy research in say 10 years as all it takes is money + qualified people.

Why are HYP good univs? Because Univs like HYP are all afloat on endowments and can offer the brightest Profs two things: - good salary + great facilities & funding for research. NYUAD is afloat on $$ from Abu DHabi . They can do the same . What more do they need? If there is good money , qualified people will come & work.

Why do you think Obama is visiting all these Asian countries ? $$$! The combo is great - Petro $$ + US educators! All the Univs that failed in UAE went down coz they planned small & had very little $$. I am sure Abu DHabi is aware that a Univ is no small investment. They have oil for a 100 years and it takes just 10 to 15 years to establish a respectable great research university - take the case of the Franklin W Olin college - when it started just a few years ago it’s SAT score % were not so hot. Look at it today . Their 25th % SAT CR + M scores hits 1440 !

From NYUnews.com:

[NYU releases preliminary Early Decision numbers | NYU’s Daily Student Newspaper](http://nyunews.com/news/2010/11/16/16decision/)

According to Shawn Abbott, assistant vice president for the office of undergraduate admissions, the university has received 3,133 early decision applications to date. Of that number, 247 applied directly to NYU Abu Dhabi, while 21 of those applied to both the Washington Square and Abu Dhabi campuses.

So this is slightly up from last year in which 236 people applied directly to NYUAD for ED!

I guess this means that interest hasn’t dwindled and NYUAD is going strong, (thank goodness)

236 to 248! that’s just a slight increase, so I don’t think its gonna impact much… although one thing, there COULD be an effect on the no. of people accepted from the ED pools cause there were only 62 ED ppl accepted last time so that no. should be higher
