NYU Abu Dhabi

@Asha18117, liyakh – Congrats to both of you as well.
@cst11 – Thanks for your appreciation. I don’t think they’d have made a decision, and yeah, I THINK that decisions may come out a bit later say March 2,3 instead of Feb. 28 and even then they’ll have ample amount of time for making the decision.
For me honestly, my parents aren’t much into me for some reason. I’m being very honest but all the backing and optimism I have for college and my future, it is wholly from my part. My parents really aren’t into “top” colleges, its kinda hard to explain but sadly all they see is a “backward” philosophy of just attending any colleges and get a job, they kinda don’t realize on as to how important attending college is, and we all know, its not just about getting a job, its beyond.
I just don’t want to lose out on NYUAD this time, I’ve done a lot for it. Personally, I think its a great choice for the fact that not only on monetary matters, but academic and research prospects are great here as well, and its about a new experience. I’m honestly not from a well-off family and so despite spending many years, I’ve found it difficult to truly experience this place, for example spending money for things are utilizing resources have been a bit problematic for us, but NYUAD will allow its students to explore this place in its full terms with both enjoyment and experience. I hope I’m making sense.

I’m kinda getting goosebumps but I will remain firm until decision day. I hope NYUAD is listening to this, so to all, good luck once again! :D

Well, I’ve been lurking in the background for the past couple of months or so and I figure now that I have something to say I might actually say it.

Yesterday, I was absolutely stunned and thrilled to discover an email inviting me to the February 24th CW! I applied to NYU Abu Dhabi as more or less a pipe-dream, a “well-I’ve done-this-much-work-so-far-I-may-as-well-continue” check-marking of a box on my NYU application. It’s been my dream for God knows how long to travel to the Middle East and suffice to say, NYUAD is my ideal university.

I applied regular decision and I don’t consider myself to be an extraordinary student. I am a dual citizen (U.S. and U.K.), but I’ve lived my entire life in New York. I have an average of around 95 and I’m in the top 10% of my class, but I’m not exactly close to being the valedictorian or salutatorian of my 177 person graduating class. My SAT score is 2190 (CR: 800, M: 610!, W: 780) with subject tests in Biology M (730), Literature (780), and U.S. History (790). I’ve taken 2 A.P. classes, both with fives, and I’m currently taking 6 others. As for extracurriculars, I work part-time, am the senior class president, play on the Varsity Tennis Team, and occasionally volunteer. I do little else other than drink tea (it’s terribly cold this time of year) and homework. I’ve also applied to Harvard, Columbia, Northeastern (accepted with a $20k scholarship), American University, and the University of Toronto.

I honestly don’t believe I’m anything outstanding, but I just thought that these stats might help ease the anxieties of some future applicants (the current thread is rather sparse in details). My only concerns are whether or not a CW corresponds with an acceptance (I know the official policy is no, but I can’t understand someone spending over $1000 on one student if they weren’t making a serious investment) and how I’m going to bide my time while I’m waiting for a plane ticket (just kidding… sort of). Also, does anyone know why they want a colour, passport size photograph on the Candidate Portal? I’ve already submitted it, but it just seemed somewhat curious.

@wesleystuben
I’m invited to Feb.24 CW as well, as regular decision applicant. I guess that photograph might be used to make ID cards or ID badges for us.
Hope to see you there!

Congrats to all of you who were invited!!! Remember, keep a count of how many kids attend the CWs - my CW (Nov) was 54, the second CW (Dec) was 63, third (Feb 3-6) is supposed to be at least 80, and this fourth one (Feb 24-27) should be able to be deciphered soon.

Personally I was sad at first that there are ED2ers on the second Feb. CW because that means I us ED2ers won’t find out until at LEAST Feb 28, but then I remember I’m happy because you could all be my future classmates :)

@wesleystuben -
invitation on a CW does NOT AT ALL correspond to an acceptance. I know plenty of ED1 kids who were invited on my CW and rejected. Also, the passport photo is just in case you lose your passport, so that it will be easier to make a new one. No photo IDs.

@cst11 - Decisions for ED2 may be out as late as March 5th, I’ve heard. Also, my parents hate the idea of me going to NYUAD (my mother cried when I sent the ED app off) but it’s my decision ultimately.

@wesleystuben, lc93430 – Congrats to you to both as well.
Ah! Patience is a virtue but its really hard to keep it y’know, still waiting optimistically for an invite. :)

Yes, CW does not equate to acceptance, as there were maybe 80, 90 ED I-ers who made a CW but only 59 got accepted. They DO think that you have a good shot, hence they are willing to spend $1000 to bring you over to abu dhabi.

I can’t make sense of the NYUAD people saying they intend to have a class of 150 again - there are already 59 people accepted ED-1, and MORE people applied ED-II so I can’t see them accepting less than, say, 60 people there. But then that would only leave 31 people for RD (which would probably mean around 40, 50 people being accepted as RD is the only non-binding option). It makes much more sense to have, maybe, 60-60-60 i.e. 180 people in the class of 2015. But I dunno.

Money ain’t exactly an issue for NYUAD since NYU is not drawing any financial resources from its NY campus, all expenses are being paid by the Emirati royal family, and we know money ain’t an issue for them either.
For predictions, I don’t know but I’ve a gut feeling that NYUAD’s Class of 2015 could be at around 200 students.

Hey everyone! So I applied to NYUAD regular decision. I am one of two students applying from my school. My counselor nominated me for NYUAD, and I was just wondering what that meant? Does it guarantee that I get invited to a CW?

I dont know why, but I changed my mind about applying to NYU-AD at the last minute…too much MORE work required :confused: I always thought it would be amazing to be part of the first classes to graduate from a potentially very successful campus, but at the same time worried about the quality of the school :S definitely not like the greenwich campus…not the same history, not the same alumni ofcourse.

I know it’s the same university…but for some reason, if I was an NYU (NYC) grad and met an NYU-AD student, I wont feel as connected to him/her as an NYU (NYC) student! Ask the Carnegie Mellon people! They know this!

@ cloudychicago-- Well , being nominated does not really mean that your going to attend a CW, however, your chances of getting an invitation are higher compared with those who are applying without going through that nomination process. Additionally the admission office will pay extra attention while evaluating your application, still being nominated is not an equation to the admission application . And good luck with all who got invited to tomorrow’s CW :)

Thanks Bana93! I’m so nervous waiting for the invitation. My stats aren’t exactly the most competitive, but I feel I could bring a lot to NYUAD. Did you already attend a CW?

No, I have not yet. I am a RD applicant , therefore, I should be invited for the second week of Feb or to the one in Mar. BTW I am nominated also.

Hey guys, I have a question actually.
So it was my parents who received the email from NYUAD telling them I have been formally invited and that additional details have been sent to my email, but I have not yet received an email from them :-/
I wrote to them this morning but still haven’t received an answer. I checked the spam folder, it is empty too. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Hey guys. I’m a sophomore and I am pretty interested in NYUAD! I was wondering, if I apply ED 1 or 2 for NYU in New York and I check the NYUAD interest box, do I have lower chances of being accepted to NYUAD because I didn’t apply directly?

@CSIHSIS, I saw this on NYUAD official website, it might be helpful to answer your question.

NYUAD class of 2014
“Of its 9,048 applicants, 957 students applied solely to NYU Abu Dhabi, while 8,091 applied to both NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York. Of the 150 students in the entering class, 127 applied only to NYU Abu Dhabi, while 23 applied to both campuses.”

@ Dzhannet
Hey! I saw that you’re applying from Kz and I’m living there now. Where are you from? What school do you go to?

@ cloudy chicago -

Nomination is definitely not a guarantee of invitation on a CW or admission. I was a nominee and I got invited on the first CW, but another student from my school who is also a nominee has not been invited to any CW. But yes, the idea is that a nomination can only help your admissions chances. What are your stats, by the way? Are you American?

I was just wondering about research project - I got so confused by it lately
Should I just state a question and basically answer it? and should it be related with my major?
Like for example
question - how did globalization influence UAE and just answer after it?

@bmraotwtn

Thanks! Yes, I’m American (if you couldn’t guess by the screen name). I wouldn’t say my stats are terrible, but I believe my strongest aspect would be my essays and extracurriculars. If you want details, please feel free to pm me.

Since you already attended a CW, would you mine sharing your experience? What did you do? How do you like Abu Dhabi? What was your favorite part?

Whoa! too many posts so I’m kinda losing focus so I’ll take time and read 'em all.

@cloudychicago – Nice to meet you, well is it me or does your username is describing the weather of your city? :stuck_out_tongue: Anyways, being nominated does not guarantee you an acceptance or for that matter even a CW invites, but your chances kinda become slightly higher. AD is a nice place, and to be honest, it’s still in the “construction phase” and its becoming to get noticed on the global stage but its still kinda in the making.
I happen to live right some 3 buildings next to Sama Tower (which is the NYUAD dorm).
I applied last year as well, made it to a CW (which was an AWESOME experience) but couldn’t make the final cut). I’m still positive and I’ve applied ED-II once again this time, I’m still waiting for my invite. :)

@CSIHSIS – Not necessarily, your chances are actually the same regardless of you ticking the box or not, it all comes down to your application’s strength basically.

@Asha18117 – I dunno but I think it all what matters is that if whether you have been able to read your invite somehow regardless of your email or your parent’s email.

@liyakh – As far as I believe, its not necessary for it to be directly related to your major (say for example what if you’re undecided) but being related actually helps a bit. The instructions are given there I believe: pose the research question. Then go about explaining it a bit from background and then explain how would you actually approach your research problem and what (if any) dilemmas/ethical issues would you believe you’d face during your approach.
