Hey. I have been accepted for admission into the class of 2016 at NYUAD…I just wanted to know if there is a summer program which I have to attend before the year?

I read the following on their website:
“To ensure that students enroll in the classes most appropriate for them, NYU Abu Dhabi provides several placement assessments. Some are offered prior to the summer mentoring meetings and some occur during Marhaba. All of these assessments are designed to ensure that individual students have a successful start to their academic careers at NYU Abu Dhabi.”

Congratulations aimohamed! No, the summer academy is something else entirely - the placement assessments that you do are done in your home country (a writing one done online) and the calculus one is done during marhaba week. “Summer mentoring meetings” are done via phone or Skype.

Hey, I want to apply for 2017 NYUAD. Is it true that all the applicants are amazing, especially studies wise? I’m an above average student I guess. I got 4 A* and 4A in IGCSE. I know 3 languages and I can read and write Arabic. I live in the UAE and I don’t want to leave my family to study abroad. I’m doing my AS levels right now. Another thing that I wanted to ask, how much do they look into our transcript? Thanks!

Hey!!! I wanted to know whether applying as ED1 or ED2 improves my chances rather than RD. The problem is my A Level Results shall come out in January which would give my application more credibility but yet, I don’t want to wait till RD…

What do you think I should do?
Would applying in October as ED1 with numerous O Levels (All A’s and A*'s) and extracurriculurs be enough if I state on my application that I am still gonna do my A Levels in Novemeber and June?

Hi! I’m also a student interested in applying for NYU AD class of 2017. I’m an IB student and I want to ask what range of scores are they looking for? I checked their website and it appears that they have students that got full scores (45) in their IB while right now I’m still at about the 30-range. If I do the SATs and get a decent grade (1900-2100) will it improve my transcript?

To those wanting to get in, this is what i would say ( my son studies there )

GPA - needs to be good obviously but, they can ignore a drop in it if the candidate demonstrates strong accomplishment in some chosen area outside the curriculum - like winning prizes or excelling on a state / national / international level for anything - be it dance, social or community service, science project, athletics , etc.

They love winners.

Or demonstrate a strong commitment to anything good - like community service done ( with proper certs ) or even to surviving a serious crisis in life or a commitment to working hard to get over some serious disadvantage is what attracts the admissions team.

But please do make sure that these achievements are properly documented into a pdf format not more than 500kb and uploaded with your common app under the Extra Curricular activities …i think!! ( NYU accepts applications only via Common app ) Presentation is important - spend some serious time in presenting it efficiently without too many paragraphs - have photos & testimonials.

recommendation letters from teachers are very important so work on it asap.

The common app Essay too are hugely important , it takes time to write a winning essay - start work now as doing it the last minute will not be a good idea at all.

Thank you for the advice nrousep. I had no idea that making a pdf document documenting our achievements and interests would bolster our chances. I f I have more info can I contact you? Thanks again.

Hey everyone!
I’m an international student applying ED for NYUAD, and hopefully getting accepted to go there in fall '13. I have read almost ALL of this 113 pages thread, visited the NYUAD website too many times and I have some questions reguarding the student life down in Abu Dhabi.

I’ve been traveling my whole life, from Africa to Asia to Eastern Europe and I am currently in France. So traveling and experiencing new cultures is my routine. I have a French Baccalaureate with an average of 17.32/20 which is one of the highest grade you can get. I’m taking the TOEFL and the SATs this fall.
That’s some insight for my “stats” : maybe someone could tell me what are my chances of getting in.

Now : my questions for NYUAD current students. What is life in Abu Dhabi? Could you tell my what a typical day is like? Do you guys go out at all? Are there some student parties from time to time? How often do you travel? Is it hard to get a study-away / J-term in your top-choice destination? Are Abu Dhabi’s drinking/kissing in public policies as strict as I’ve heard? How are the dorms organised? From what I know, there’re single-gender floors and some are non-visitory. But on visitory dorms, can guys and girls hang out in the same room? What’s the policy on that? And what do you typically do on the weekends?

THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING! I need some info ASAP!!

Daily life in Abu Dhabi itself is relatively dull compared to other major cities (NY, London etc) but at the same time you do have homework so you don’t feel as obliged to go out as often, but this depends on the person I guess. There are heaps of restaurants though, so I go out to eat around once a week. Travel for trips depends on your major - if you do SRPP you tend to get trips all around the region, while a science major kinda doesn’t really have any. Study abroad for two semesters is pretty much guaranteed, it’s very hard to get rejected. J-term study abroads are harder as everyone is competiting to get into a finite number (may be as small as 2) of courses in a country so not everyone will get their first choice. But I think the system at NYUAD is very fair in deciding who gets what.

AD is not as strict as, say, Sharjah but public drinking is definitely banned (legally, drinking is banned unless you have an alcohol permit but this isn’t enforced much). Kissing in public doesn’t really happen either unless you mean when girls do it to each other as a greeting. Floors are single-gender by floor and for the visitation floors, yes guys and girls can hang out in the same room. No policy on it.

Thank for your reply. I’m applying to NYUAD early decision : deadline November 1st.
Is there anyone in the same case as me? It would be nice to share some stats so we can feel what the competition is like :)

Hey! I am a prospective US applicant applying for NYUAD. I was wondering how financial support works. For example, my family makes 180,000 and has one student in university already, so how much aid do you guys think I would qualify for? I know there may be inferences involved but I just want to get a ball park. I am Ivy League-bound and my parents would only consider NYUAD if monetary incentives are involved ><.

Hi, I’m applying to this November. My stats were stated in a previous post. Have you guys started work on your essays? The scope of topics is so huge, I can’t seem to decide where to begin, any help or ideas? What are the other applicants stats?

Hey, endofjuly, are you referring to the NYU supplement essays? I just finished two of them today Now I just need to review my application and such. I am a student from the US with a 4.8 GPA and 2330 SAT in terms of objective stats.

Hello there! Also NYUAD hopeful
I’m a female veiled muslim. I’m originally from Egypt, grew up in America, and I am currently living in AD. Bilingual, full GPA, ranked first. Retaking SAT for a 2200+ (almost there!) I probably don’t stand a chance, but trying to remain optimistic! Good luck to all the applicants! :D
