NYU ED Class of 2023

@nyuclassof2023 I’m sorry to hear that you may not be able to take up your place.
NYU specifically says that if the financial aid package does not meet enough of your financial need to allow you to attend, then you can back out of ED. In this circumstance, backing out won’t penalize you at other schools. Good luck.

multiple AP/Honors taking as many as my school offers that will fit in my schedule. currently have 4 community college classes under my belt (1 in summer '17, 3 this past semester senior year bc i did dual enrollment). opportunities at my hs are not great, i took advantage of dang near everything thats offered. like 30% of students go to college, even less to a 4-year let alone private out of state.

extremely strong ECs with 2 (extremely high and demanding) leadership positions in key club (junior and senior year) with an award for outstanding performance in my junior year position, received President’s Volunteer Service Award, 3 years of ASB/class leadership, participation and leadership in Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Organization (10,11,12 grade) with Academic All-Star recognition, worked a seasonal job fall of my junior year to pay for my business-related trips & extra expenses that came with the leadership position, volunteered as a student poll worker in the recent midterm elections, junior varsity softball (quit to focus on other ECs im more passionate about)

i think my rec letters are going to be okay from my teachers, but I have a strong peer recommendation that someone I worked with (my “boss”) in my leadership position wrote me. (side note: i also have a strong rec letter from a Kiwanis club president (an adult), should I use that instead of a peer rec even if the peer rec is strong?)

i got one D my junior year
wrote a very genuine additional comments statement about what I went through my junior year with my family and everything explaining my low grades and lack of SAT prep.

hoping that my common app statement is strong, and I know my passion for the LSP and GLS shines through in the Why NYU essay, but can anyone really tell if they have a strong essay since it relies so much on the admissions counselors and what they are looking for that year

need some realistic thoughts from peers, sorry for wordy and long post.

@lbm2023, you say you did multiple APs. Did you do well in them? If so it might be worth you submitting AP scores rather than SAT, which jumps out as a really weak point in your application even with mitigating factors. Anecdotally - just anecdotal, from my daughter chatting to other ED1 admits - students admitted with lower than average GPAs like you have tended to have good standardized test scores. Your SAT however is way below the 25th percentile for NYU. If you have 4s or, preferably, 5s across the stipulated types of AP exams that would I think be a better choice for showing test scores.
The ECs, rigor etc look good, but academics matter too, so I’m worried about that SAT. The rec letters from your teachers will be more important than the others.

@lbm2023 I had almost the same stats as you. All honors and AP classss, good extracurriculars, excellent recommendation letters, and the best essays. And I was deferred from ED1 to ED2 into the Liberal Studies Core Program

My weighted GPA is higher than yours though I had a 4.5

Wrote formal appeal to admissions to be moved from Washington DC to NYC to pursue varsity swimming. Placed on wait list and do not move any students until May with no guarantee. Acceptance was to Washington DC and if I commit next week be prepared to spend Freshman year there. That would preclude my goal of competing for the team. Also, I will have to withdraw all my EA acceptances, to good schools some with D1 opportunities. Very frustrating trying to get info with NYU on break. Big and fast decisions. Sure I’m not the only one that’s between a rock and a hard place! Good Luck to everyone!

@enjoyinglife I get the impression (but am not sure) that they give people who put LSP as first choice, preference when assigning the freshman location, which is why you’ll need to wait till May to find out. (I’m assuming you weren’t recruited as an athlete otherwise you’d naturally have been assigned to NYC?) Anyway good luck with the decision, I can see it’s a difficult one - keep us posted if you decide to commit to NYU or go elsewhere?

Thanks for the info. You may be right about LSP as first choice getting 1st choice location. My first choice CAS.
Regarding the swimming, coach and I have been in communication since last summer. Time standards he requested were ridiculously fast so I was not an active recruit last fall. I got faster and into NYU on my own so door again open.
Yes, will keep you posted on my NYU decision.

Is anyone’s housing payment showing as completed yet? I paid the housing deposit at the same time as the enrollment deposit when I confirmed my enrollment (on Dec. 16). However, although the “confirm enrollment” is checked off on my status page (updated Dec. 17), when I go into the housing application it still says “you have not met the payment requirements”. Could it just be taking longer for them to process the housing deposit? Does anyone have it shown that their housing payment is complete on the app? Hopefully it will update after the holiday…

@pandorasb0x Same here. Paid enrollment and housing deposit, but says requirement not met. I think I read somewhere that it would not update until February.

@pandorasb0x @yellahamma If you go to the bursar e-suite and click on “current activity” under my account,it should show separately the payments for tuition deposit and housing deposit. I didn’t see confirmation anywhere else yet.

So if i dont accept or decline the offer by midnight what happens?

@ld344718 if your letter is phrased the same as my D’s, which I presume it is, you will lose the place: “If we do not receive your decision be the deadline, we will relinquish your space in our class.”
But the deadline is 3 Jan, not today.
