NYU ED Class of 2023

@YooImTim I put two teacher recs and the counselor rec

@YooImTim oh yeah my counselors letter too

At the info session they said they require 1 teacher plus 1 counselor letter, can put in a third rec if you want, but asked for no more than 3 …said if the first 3 can’t get the point across then the 4th+ won’t change the picture and just takes up time to read. Apparently one year some guy got like 10 or more recs and they were really annoyed with him!

@YooImTim oh yeah I put my counselor’s letter too

@SJ2727 wow that’s crazy and yeah I just put the optional one from an outside recommender because like why not haha that letter is just basically talking about my community service and talking about what I have done for a board in my community I am on/volunteer for

What do y’all think about recommendation letters that are more than one page? Is it a good sign or will counselor just won’t be bothered to read that long? Also, how important is letter of recommendation?

@enr3291 yeah same, I had three total without my counselors. The counselor was required no matter what. I had two academic teachers from junior year and one senator i interned for. On the common app it allowed max of two academic recommenders and one max “other recommender”. So you should be fine~ Just wanted to make sure i wasnt the only one haha

@natasha1313 , how do you know how long your letters were?

As explained in the info session - they want to see applicants who will contribute to class and to college life in general, and they want some talk about character. This is what they look for in the rec letters. They actually said - don’t assume you should get the letter from the class you do best in and (positively) mentioned one where the student had been struggling a bit in that class and the teacher talked about their perseverance, approach to what they found difficult, etc.

They did say that they usually put greater weight on teacher than counsellor rec, especially at bigger schools where each counsellor is responsible for hundreds of kids.

If you look at the CDS (I dunno how much weight to really place on this), NYU lists school rigor, class rank, GPA and standardized scores as “very important”, and essays and recs as “important”, along with ECs. The other stuff is either just “considered” or “not considered”. https://www.nyu.edu/content/dam/nyu/institutionalResearch/documents/CDS_2017-2018.pdf

@SJ2727 this was super helpful, thank you!

And I don’t know about @natasha1313, but many of my recommenders sent me their letters after they submitted them, even though I waived my rights.

US education wasn’t that popular in my school so my counselor kind of checked in stuffs with me, mainly the common app form, to make sure it was alright, even though i didn’t actually read it @SJ2727 however, do you think an amazing letter of rec could make or break your chances? Like how ‘important’?

For all the Sternies out there, how important do you think it is to have business experience before applying to Stern?

@natasha1313 , I doubt a rec letter by itself is make or break unless they are literally looking at 2 potentials almost equal in everything else and can only choose one… and that kind of choice is not likely to happen at ED stage anyway I’d think? i think they look for all the bits of the puzzle to add up. If you get a truly awful rec letter it can probably mess it up, but I doubt anyone asks for a rec from someone they can’t rely on to at least be kinda nice about them.

I forgot you weren’t from the US.

@okisaperson , “many” of your recommenders?! How many did you have lol

11 DAYS TO GO UNTIL DECISION DAY!! :expressionless:

@SJ2727 For the common app, I had recs from my counselor, teacher, head of school (I submitted that as my second teacher rec), and one other recommender who is an alum. Plus, Clive Davis Institute requires one additional rec, but I talked to a couple of the professors who review the apps at Clive and they said they’d read two if I sent it.

I originally only asked three people for recs, but I went to a super small high school and have become really close friends with a lot of the teachers. When they found out I was applying to NYU, a few people asked if they could write me recs. I was hesitant to submit this many–mostly because I didn’t want anyone to put time/effort into writing me a letter if it wasn’t even going to get read. It’s still technically within the limits, though, and professors and admissions officers from both Clive and NYU gave me the go-ahead.

Anyway - all in all, I submitted six letters. Haha, it’s a lot, I know.

@YooImTim we good haha also do you guys think they may release decisions the 14th? i think that’s very likely bc my friends mom who has already sent two of her kids focused ivies (and almost become a college app advisor type of person) said that schools never really send decisions out on the weekends. ik someone got an email saying stuff may be released before the 15th but i think it may be almost kind of expected if you think about it? idk

Anyone else here applied ED to NYU Meyers? How hard is it?

Does anyone know what time they’ll release their decision? Would it be in the morning or afternoon?

@hellotherea hey! I applied ED1 to Rory Meyers. Great question, that question actually remains pretty much unanswered. There is just not enough statistics to draw conclusions on whether or not Meyers is competitive. I have reached out to so many admitted students and did research. Feel free to look at the thread i created for Rory Meyers ED1.

Dec 15. 4pm eastern standard time I think…

She’s had the same FA language as everyone else described here (no award status), there have not been any changes to that.
