NYU Tisch Studio placement — discussion and results

Yay! So exciting! In honor of the Studio Assignments coming out, time to repeat the classic NYU studio lightbulb joke…

How many Adler kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?
“I am the light bulb.”

How many Atlantic Kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?"
“How can I get you to screw in the light bulb?”

“How many Strasberg kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“The light bulb was warm, my mother was there…”

“How many Meisner kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“How many Meisner kdis does it take to screw in a light bulb? How many Meisner kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?” How many Mesiner kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?"

“How many NSB kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“I don’t do tech”

“How many ETW Kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“Orange.”

“How many Playwrights kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“I can do it! and in addition if you need anything, I can also hang and focus the light, and when I’m done with that if you need me I can build the set and sew the costumes. But let me give you a conflict schedule because I’m also acting. Oh and do you know of anyone who needs a dramaturg? Cuz I’m not doing anything on Wed. Nights between 7:52 and 8:37 and I would really like to fill that time slot up.”

“How many Tech track kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“Its a LAMP, and F&#% You!”

@mammameuh - my D’s roommate is in Meisner and very happy. I will check around about the voice and dance question. It’s New York so there are a ton of resources but within the school I think it’s also possible, My D added a 2 credit private piano lesson her first semester and will do it again next year - I assume you can do the same with voice and/or dance.

@CaMom13 thank you!

@mammameuh - here are two links… Private voice for non-majors is available through Steinhardt and Dance through Tisch. Voice is 2 credits for a 30 minute lesson once a week and 4 for a 60 minute lesson. Your daughter’s normal schedule will be 16 credits freshman year: 8 Studio pus the two 4 credit academic courses. You can take up to 18 credits without paying any more tuition and you probably don’t want to overload the first semester so I’d recommend adding either a 2 credit voice or a dance (ballet) class. She can get non-ballet outside of NYU at Broadway Dance Center but I’d wait until she is there and has balanced her workload before trying that.

@Gapyearguru - my D spent 2.5 of her NYU years at adler- happy to answer any questions. For now, buy black  And she is, indeed the lightbulb

Wonderful @CaMom13, thank you so much!

A little late to the party but was sent a text from my S and he got placed in New Studio which was his first choice. His Friday got even better after the email.

Congratulations to your son, @Mufasa23 ! My D has loved her first year at NSB. She would honestly have been happy in any studio but NSB was also her first choice and she got lucky.

Course registration day. My S has 16 credits for the semester and I told him not to go for anymore especially being a first ever college semester. Voice course has no credits so 16 without that should be a full load

D has 16 too, and I said the same. Add nothing else. She got the 12:20 slot and two of the sections she wanted were closed. 8 am for her this semester!

S got everything but one which was the Honors course, he is wait listed for that one. The earliest start he has is the 9am start at NSB and has Mondays off for now. Might be a good day to work at a starbucks

I was also reminded by a college buddy that NYU one year cost will be more than the 4 years cost at UW. I had to remind myself, we only have one kid and why not let him go where his passion is. I feel little better now

They will keep plenty busy with 16!

@Mufasa23 - there is never a shortage of people wanting to tell you you’re wasting your money sending your kid to into the performing arts and/or to a private university. The only response you can make is that it’s your money to waste. We don’t drive fancy cars and we both work at full-time jobs - I tell my daughter we made our choices on where to save and spend in order to allow her to choose the education she wants. UW (Wisconsin or Washington?) is a great school for students who want what they have to offer - my eldest went to a big state flagship and loved it. But NYU and Tisch offer a college experience unlike any other. We were watching my nephew’s D1 baseball team on TV last week and my D remarked “I realize now how happy I am that athletics isn’t a major focus at NYU”. The decision to go to one school vs another simply isn’t just about money - it’s about fit. And people who don’t get that need to be ignored.

@CaMom13 it’s Washington. We bleed purple and gold but guess what, NYU is also purple. My son went to a public school which is best in the state but they had no sports teams, which my son loved. Going to a school with athletics was least of his concerns, I was the total opposite. Now it’s onto housing assignment in July, he has ranked Lipton as first choice. How are the private rooms in a suite or studio assigned? Medical exemption, first come first serve, people who want to incur the additional cost?

Hmmm - @Mufasa23, I dont know? I would assume medical exemption would have priority and but we didn’t deal with that - my D was okay with a shared room. I remember she ranked dorms and got her first choice, I do know that getting your housing deposit in get your in line for first choice on dorms but room / roommate assignments are released later in the summer… early August or late July in our case.

@CaMom13 Well said! I’m letting my daughter follow her dreams and to her, there’s no better place to start. It’s no one’s business about the cost as long as you’re comfortable with it.

I wish I could tell you all that the jokes about the cost of NYU go away after they start school… but my kid graduated a year ago and it still comes up sometimes. Smile and nod

Okay, my D is registered and waiting for approval for her private voice lesson through Steinhardt. Thank you again @CaMom13 for your help!

Hmm - I got moderated when I tried this earlier - let me try without the link.

I hope all of you watching are enjoying the Tonys! If you haven’t followed TSOA on Facebook, you should. Three winners (so far) tonight got their BFAs in Drama from Tisch - best lighting, best direction of a musical and best featured actress in a musical. Fun to see the variety of careers coming from the same degree / school and fun for parent and students to have that small connection with award winning artists.

We can see D’s dorm. Third North. It was not top 3 on her list. Veteran parents- feedback on this dorm?
