Is there a theory behind not letting students choose their studio?
@laylamom I can’t add much to what @soozievt told you about ETW because she knows the most and has such a talented daughter who has had such an amazing experience and continues to thrive, but I did ask my D about it so I just wanted to let you know what she responded – which was basically that there are a lot of movement based acting classes and wonderful opportunities to create solo projects, everyone she knows that has come out of it has loved it, and they have a great alumni network! If your D does choose to attend, it sounds like she is in for the ride of her life!
@soozievt That sounds just so so wonderful. I’d love to end up back in the city! Right now my daughter really craves the space away from Mom. I’m trying to embrace it as it is natures full circle but OUCH MY HEART!
I cannot thank you enough. I’ve copied your posts and emailed them to my daughter (in the next room haha)! Readind all of this will mean the world to her.
You must be so incredibly proud! Oh and we also watch Crazy ex GF and also love Rachel Bloom!!
@alwaysamom I was placed in Atlantic. I’m a little hesitant because I had the impression it is very physical, which I am not very into. I talked a lot about meisner during my audition so I am surprised I was placed in Atlantic! I have heard that NYU is a Hogwarts sorting hat when it comes to studios, so I was wondering if you could give me some info on what Atlantic really is?
Thank you @jbtcat she is certainly leaning that way. I pictured her in a small school in a strong but intimate program and though I’m went to NYC at a young age I’m full of angst. Thank you so much for the help!

I don’t know of any theory. But what I can say is that a student is accepted to study at Tisch Drama. Studio placement is just one part of the Tisch experience/program. There are a number of courses that a Tisch student must take in theater that are not even in their studio (and they are with students from every studio in those courses). And of course there are liberal arts classes too. Further, primary studio placement is just for two years and so a student can study in more than one studio. All offer good training. A student is getting a degree in Tisch Drama, not a degree in the studio itself. Imagine if students chose their studio…what would happen is that the numbers might exceed spots that are available in each studio. That would not work. I realize you could say if a kid wanted X studio and there was no room, they could be rejected, but why reject them when Tisch feels the student is qualified and talented and appropriate to be trained at Tisch Drama? Truly, the college is admitting students into Tisch Drama, not directly into a studio. The placement is where the student will spend their studio hours the first two years within the department, but also be taking many theater courses that are not studio based within Tisch Drama as well.
@bisouu - this is just me, but I imagine it would have to do with the idea that 18 year olds are not well versed in he actual STUDY of drama - the methodologies etc.
@mrsborle Congrats on Atlantic! My D loved her years there and got excellent training. I don’t recall it being “very physical”. Have you read A Practical Handbook for the Actor? If not, get yourself to a library, or Amazon, and get a copy. It will provide a good explanation for the theory behind Atlantic. I’m assuming you’ve already studied the Atlantic webpage and the curriculum?
Atlantic is known for hard work, excellent training and good prep for the business. It provided my D with so many opportunities, multiple performances, numerous connections (one of which was the genesis of her having lived and worked in London since a year after graduation) and she was fortunate enough to have three different offers of work upon graduating.
Having said all that, my D graduated almost 11 years ago so you might want to see if you can connect with some current students.
@123Mimi Atlantic kids can study in another studio for fourth year. Some also will take an academic semester or year.
Hi all. My S was placed in Adler. I have a couple of questions. How many Students are placed in Adler total? Also - I read somewhere that Adler doesn’t have a voice class, but that my S could take voice through Tisch for credit. Is that accurate and how easy is that to do? Thanks!
@MomofJ5 My D was also in a studio that didn’t offer voice classes but she was able to take a voice class through Tisch and yes, it’s for credit. She really enjoyed the one on one experience of her voice class. Sometimes if they fill up your S may have to wait for sophomore year but as far as I know it wasn’t too difficult and once you have a teacher they will make sure that you can continue with them through multiple semesters, at least that was the case with my D.
@MomofJ5 Also, I’m not sure of the total amount of students in Adler but my D’s friend who is currently in Adler said they do split them into smaller groups for their classes, usually 15-20.
@actingdreams did your S get his studio placement? Did I miss it?

I posted this earlier but will put it here for those of you who may be visting Tisch. If you can, inquire about tickets to some of these wonderful production opportunities. I know someone inquired about Strasberg and tonight, their students open Twelve Angry Men.
@jbtcat hiya! I didnt make it later on to post. My S was placed in Atlantic. I don’t know a lot about it but we’re hoping to research it quickly. If you all have information, please share. I welcome it
@jbtcat I see @alwaysamom just shared some tidbits I need to catch up
@actingdreams Atlantic was the one my D was hoping for but she’s getting into her’s now (ETW) that she knows!
My daughter was placed in NSB, and I’ll admit it was a little bit of a shock - her other acceptances were for straight acting programs (1 BFA and 1 BA) and then 4 WL (combination of academic, BFA, and BA.) She’s thrilled, obviously - she didn’t pass 6 of her pre-screens, was terribly sick before several auditions, and NYU was the very last school we heard from. She was ready to commit regardless of which studio she was placed into (and basically had given up the dream of MT) so getting the e-mail yesterday resulted in some happy tears.
@actingdreams congratulations! I hope you get the information you need. @alwaysamom is a great source!
@dramamamaCC Congratulations to your daughter! How amazing for her that she doesn’t have to give up her MT dream (although she would not have had to do even if she was placed in another Tisch studio). See there is just no predicting in this crazy process!
@dramamamaCC - our story almost exactly! My daughter was thrilled to be admitted to Tisch Drama and would have happily accepted any studio assignment but MT is her first love so she was pinching herself after being placed into NSB. She was devouring the first year curriculum page yesterday - all that speech and voice training! Very happy day here.
