Congratulations to your D too, @CaMom13 !
Thanks @jbcat! The last couple of weeks have been so great - we feel like she won the BFA admissions lottery. Having been through some very discouraging times during this application process we are fully aware of how lucky she is to have this opportunity.
@CaMom13 what an awesome feeling! Has she decided to commit to NYU or is she still weighing other options?
Oh no - she visted last week and confirmed what we already knew - she was committing to NYU! She loves NYC and NYU has always been a dream school for her. Enrollment and Housing deposit are IN!
@laylamom Ahh there are so many! Like how do they know what is right? I’m sure they are masters at what they do. I’m just floored at how they just know. I’m always nervous about them just putting faces to go with other faces (males) and having enough from both. that’s it. That’s how the class/studio is formed. I’m more lost than I was before this all started lol
Does anyone know if there is any classical scene study (esp. Shakespeare) in Strasberg?
@CaMom13 that’s great! So exciting!
@dramamamaCC and @CaMom13 Congratulations on NSB! One of my very favorite students is there now as a freshman and is over the moon happy with the MT training AND the acting! They will have a fantastic time!
@actindreams I understand. Some of this is nuts and bolts but some is instinct, guts and leap of faith. It’s really a challenge not to go a bit nuts!
@2ndGradeTeacher - another parent asked about Strasberg yesterday and it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of board members who know the program well - I might call the school directly for info. From what I know as a non-expert: Strasberg is the famous “method acting” approach and it can be applied to all forms of theater - Marlon Brando was an early Strasberg student and he did Shakespeare ;). Many of the greatest actors in American cinema are method actors. At Tisch the Classical studio is one of the studios you can only join for advanced study (in your 3rd year).
Here’s the Strasberg curriculum page:

and here’s information on the Classical studio, in case you weren’t aware of it

@2ndGradeTeacher I asked my D about a Shakespeare class at Strasberg and @CaMom13 is correct. There is not a Shakespeare class per se but students sometimes do Shakespeare scenes in their scene study classes.
@actingdreams according to my D Atlantic focuses a lot on script analysis and that all the girls can cry really well on cue so they seem to work a lot on getting in touch with their emotions
As I understand it - Adler is the only studio where you really hit Shakespeare freshman year
@theatreloverca I feel like I shouldn’t be laughing at your post… but it did make me laugh!
@theatreloverca I’m with @dramamamaCC I’m laughing a little bit. I think that is fantastic! I don’t think my S had imagined Atlantic. He just assumed it would be Stella or Meisner so this was shocking.
My D has read the philosophy of Atlantic in the last few days in more details and she proclaimed: It’s exactly what I think acting is all about. From sentences that resonated with her: " that the purpose of every individual element of a production is to simply and truthfully tell the story. Simple, honest and straightforward, Practical Aesthetics demystifies the process of acting by giving the actor a very clear set of analytical and physical tools. "
She is also intrigued by the idea of time at Atlantic in Los Angles for later study - does anyone have information about this program?
Also since Atlantic is so far west of the rest of the campus – which dorm would you suggest for freshman year?
@actingdreams & @dramamamaCC Oh, I agree when my D described it I laughed a little too but when it comes down to it acting can be a little strange, in a good way
Did your child get placed into Strasberg? I am hearing it is very good, especially if the students also like to sing and dance but I don’t know much about it. Seems like there are really some amazing alums of Strasberg.
Ok guys. I think it’s random (except for the MT kids), and the reason it “works” is that the kids who enter the program go in with an open mind and want to learn. My S got Adler. No complaints, just… there’s no connection between this studio and S’s past. he’s never done Shakespeare, and he is a singer. These aren’t secrets. You can figure this out from his resume. Adler has first year’s doing Shakespeare work (OK, my S clearly needs that), and no voice (which maybe he can get from Tisch). So I’m not being critical of the program, I’m just voicing an opinion that they don’t “get it right” with their 350-500 acceptances. It just works out because they have smart, talented and motivated students who rise above the randomness.
Thanks for checking for me!
My daughter did get placed into Strasberg. We are excited, but we are still trying to figure out the financial end.
