I post on this forum to try to counteract the misinformation, panic and misdirection that frequently occurs when only applicants and newbies to the NYU application process contribute. When my daughter went through the process last year there was so much bad information on CC and people made themselves nuts over each rumor or possible mystic sign. If you feel like getting worked up over bad information that’s totally your prerogative but I like to add a reality check for applicants and parents who prefer that to making themselves crazy with second-guessing. And yeah, I don’t really care if that irritates people who would prefer to hear only rumors and complaints.
Maybe it’s ambitious, but still, it’s two parents who both have kids accepted at NYU. Like it or not, that does say something about our understanding of the process. If you don’t like what we say, feel free to ignore it. Others may find it useful even if you don’t.
The actual process is pretty uniform from year to year. The school follows the same general schedule and they use the same computer system with the same quirks and tells (although there are very few real tells) - honestly, they even send out the same emails with minor revisions. The admissions process is a series of milestones/tasks - it’s not chaotic or unpredictable from the school’s side. What is unpredictable from year to year is the number of applicants / acceptances, who the school is looking for in any given year, who will get in and who won’t.
@CaMom13 I get the sense, you’re sincerely trying to help… thank you!
@PSH2019 - I personally appreciate anybody’s incite regarding this process. The wait has been been the worst and if any one has some theory as to the method I would like to know. Thank you @SJ2727 and @CaMom13.
I find it funny that parents here are starting these heated arguments with random people online over this thread. I just simply can’t fathom my parents or any of my friends’ parents taking the time to sit down, scroll through a thread like this, and start arguing with other parents or waitlisted students. Very funny, thanks for the entertainment.
Seriously though, some people have said this before but the truth to the matter that we have at hand here is that we don’t really know what’s going to happen. If NYU isn’t publicizing information online beyond the waitlist update, they’re not going to tell you more just because you call them and ask. They’ll provide you vague and redundant information that isn’t really going to do much help, but people here seem to kiss the ground that admissions officers walk on because they told them something over the phone like “the waitlist isn’t closed yet, I can’t disclose more information on particular schools”. Guys, AOs are people too - I’d hope that none of you go around trying to decipher people’s sentences to pull some additional information out of them like it’s some sort of riddle. They don’t try to trick you and they don’t follow a script with which words to say when you speak with them over the phone. Get over it. This is how these stupid rumors come up and people start freaking out over it. They go by policy on what they can disclose, because if they say too much then people start to freak out over it. It seems like these days it takes much less than that for people to just lose their judgement.
I’m still on the waitlist for SPS and I’ve been following this thread quietly from its inception. I do appreciate people that have helped add value to this, but I think people should understand that we can only do so much. The power is in their hands, and the decision you or your child will get does not depend on whatever ambiguous information they tell you over the phone or because an additional semicolon was added to your portal. Let’s all calm down and ride this out because this is enough of a ■■■■ show as it already is. And also, I get it that a lot of people here (especially waitlisted students, not as much for the parents) are so anxious about their decision that they’re scared to even call the office. I’ve seen a multitude of people here asking for some random person to call the office and ask them for more details on the waitlist. Seriously? Are you that intimidated by them? Do you really think they’re going to reject you because you decided to call them and ask them a question? Sure, if you overdo it you’re going to soon become the laughingstock of the admissions office and as soon as they see your caller ID on the phone for the 70th time they’ll probably argue on who’s going to have to pick up the phone and deal with you pestering them. There’s nothing wrong with moderation, but come to your senses already. If you’re going to get accepted/rejected, a phone call won’t change anything. We’ve all demonstrated our interest and (hopefully) offered them a preview of how we’ll be a worthy addition to the community through our applications. Let them do their work. Universities are as much of an industry as anything else, there’s nothing mystical about it so you guys have to stop going crazy over the tiniest things before this thread starts looking like a psych ward.
For the applicants on the waitlist: we’re in this together. It sucks that we’ve been waiting for so long, but it is what it is. It’ll come in its due time and whatever happens is meant to be. We should be glad that NYU was interested enough in us to not completely reject us.
For the parents: I don’t understand why your kids aren’t the ones doing this research. I understand that your frustration with the waitlist nearly mirrors that of us waitlisted students, but there’s only so much that you can do. I don’t like how a few parents here seem to think they’re some authority figure on this thread because they’re parents so their opinion is more valuable than the students’. Just because you went through the admissions process yourself years ago and your kids are going through it now doesn’t necessarily mean you’re an expert in the field.
I’m going to get so much backlash from this so I probably won’t be checking this for a while, but at least I was the one to try to fix everyone’s head on straight. Good luck to everyone
Thanks @kmacrna - I know you’re waiting for Tisch Drama and boy, I wish we had some magic 8 Ball there because it’s been crickets. The waiting is hard on everyone.
Well said & thank you!! @cluelesschild You’re certainly not going to get any backlash from me… lol
It’s been a long, frustrating process for sure (I was WL’d ED 2)!
Yes, we’re in this together. All the best!
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Might I remind members of the forum rules: “Our forum is expected to be a friendly and welcoming place.”
This is a stressful time for everyone, so let’s support each other instead of throwing shade at one another. The snark ends now. Several posts edited/deleted.
I will also reiterate a point that was made earlier - all members in good standing are welcome to post on this thread. No parent is the final authority on NYU (and AFAIK none has claimed to be), but IME many have knowledge that they are willing to share. Feel free to accept it or not. And the parents of this year’s class are just as anxious as their kids. One should not assume that just because a parent is participating that they are doing the work for the student.
Best of luck to all.
Anything? Anyone?..
@kmacrna - the only CC activity in the last 10 days has been for the transfer applicants; they heard back late last week. If last year’s pattern is being followed admissions will send out an email around June 1st indicating the waitlist offers are done. They don’t totally release the waitlist for another month because there’s always the one-off student who drops. I don’t know if this helps at all in your situation but there was one Tisch Drama WLer last year who waited until the bitter end, wasn’t accepted, took a gap year and was accepted ED1. If you don’t like your other options, that’s something to consider. If you were WL’d - they think you’re good enough, they just don’t have the room.
@CaMom13 - thank you. I guess its time for me to move on. i really appreciate all the information you provided.
It’s really slowed down here, I expect something from NYU next week saying Waitlist is full
@Oneiota2 you also applied for music business, right? Where are you planning to go?
bbeft13, Yes, Music Business. Steinhardt was 1st choice, Bandier at Syracuse was 2nd. I was accepted into the Bandier Program at Syracuse so will go there. It’s a great program and I’m excited about it.
@Oneiota2 I am also going to Bandier at Syracuse! That’s crazy. NYU was my first choice as well. I will see you in the fall then!
@bbeft13, That’s crazy since Bandier only takes 25 -30 kids a year. Congrats, see you at the Newhouse School & Bandier
I’m still on the waitlist for the college of arts & sciences. I sent them an email at the end of this week to reaffirm my interest and say it remains my #1 choice. Obviously the waitlist update said the majority of offers have been given already but is it still worth having hope?
Yes! You as well! Are you in the bandier group chat?
@bbeft13 , No what is the site? Thx
