Can someone from Boston tell me how it is?

neat map.

PG, I think it’s still raining in Boston.

Thread reminds me of Halloween blizzard in Minneapolis, 1991. Trick or treating seriously curtailed. 33 inches when done. Can’t remember how long the power was out. But do remember the following July when 8 babies (our S included) were welcomed into the neighborhood! :)

Police went to my parents house, a light was on, but no one came to the door when they rang. I am really hoping they are playing majong at friend’s house and decide to stay over instead of driving home late tonight. It is so irresponsible of them.

^^^Emilybee, I so appreciate that map! I just looked up all the places where my relatives reside.

Also: 21 inches in Lee, MA! Poor Arlo Guthrie and Rachel Maddow.

Oldfort, hoping your parents are ok.

Supposed to be 56-58 on Thursday, all up the coast from NYC to Portland, ME.

We have 6-7 inches of the heavy, white stuff about 20 miles north of NYC. We have lost huge branches off beautiful trees. I think our one magnolia was destroyed.
I went outside to try to clear snow off some branches so that they could spring back to where they belonged, but I kept hearing loud cracking as branches broke, so I went running back inside. It has sounded like someone has been bowling on our roof for many hours and we are thinking that it’s large clumps of snow falling off trees, but it may be branches falling onto our roof.

We got the reverse 911 call today from our old town in NJ, warning us to stay inside due to dangerous, limb-breaking tree falling snow. A little chilly but beautiful here in NC today.

Check out the maps on these sites! Scary! http://www.lohud.com/article/20111029/NEWS02/111029015/Check-power-outage-maps-online

Mom just called. They were playing majong all day. I gave her an earful.

glad she’s OK. time to download a movie and relax[ see the margin call thread]

My daughter just informed me of no power at her college in Western Mass. She is supposed to take a Peter Pan bus at 7 a.m. to Boston for a flight to Chicago for a med school interview… So far, Peter pan is showing that they are running, just hoping that holds.

Oldfort, glad to hear your mom is okay.

Lord, please stop me from emailing my son storm-related advice.

OMG, hang on, dear CCers.

hanaviolet, can I join you in your prayer? I’m keeping fingers crossed that since this is DD’s fourth year in MA, she is snow-savvy.

Power went out around 10 pm last night and is still out so we have no power or heat (we could turn on the stove and we also have hot water). We got much more snow overnight but I think that a lot of it will melt during the day. It is going down to 26 tonight so we will have some icing from the melt. I need to check our Ma place for power and will take everyone down there if there is power there. Good thing that I bought some gasoline last night.

National grid’s map is out of date - it showed no outages in our area. We do not lose power often because our neighborhood has underground wiring and we are off the main road to the power company which is four miles away.

The emergency town generators must have kicked in for water and they will run for a week.

It appears that the next major metro area is down too. It should be easier to assess things when it is light out.

We’re in Worcester, MA area. Went to see Lehigh women’s soccer play at Holy Cross yesterday, but they called game at about halftime because the snow was too deep. Lehigh’s team had to spend the night here. We got over a foot and lost power intermittently, with large limbs breaking all night. It is forecast to be in the 60s here midweek!

Oldfort- glad your parents were ok. Role reversal - had to laugh.

Philly weatherman, just said that October storms predict the kind of winter ahead. Storms that come up the coast from the South, gee, sound familiar.

Lots of downed trees and power outages in NE Jersey. Thankfully the roads are not icy. My brother just called and said our parents (a few miles away) have no heat/power. He’s picking them up and bringing them here. I am the crazy one heading out to the Giants game. Stay warm everyone and Go Blue!

It snowed all day here yesterday, starting hours before the predicted changeover from rain. Accumulation seemed less than what it would have been normally for that duration of a storm, three inches or so. Branches were snapping loudly all night and we finally lost power around 9 pm. Watched movies and TV news via ipad for the first time in that situation! The power company estimated that electricity wouldn’t be back till Monday, so it was a very happy surprise when it came back on at 2 am.

We used to lose power a lot, but the power company supposedly fixed our neighborhood’s issues and now it’s been years since we lost it for more than a few minutes. I think we’ll be revisiting the generator issue, too.
