I’m going to save that recipe…if I start it now…guaranteed the power will go out.

I have lived in this area of northern NJ for almost 50 years and I have never seen anything like this storm. The snow accumulation looks like 5,6", but the destruction is incredible, anywhere you drive around here there are branches and trees down, and power went already for 5 hours or so (just got it back, could lose it again), roads are blocked, it is pretty bad. I have seen blizzards, tropical storms, ice storms and nothing like this. When I go outside, you hear the branches on big trees snapping with a report like a rifle shot, it is eerie. They are saying the wind is going to kick up later, too…might lose power again. Been a really weird weather year, I am seriously thinking of investing in a backup generator for critical circuits, with the weird weather, we have lost power more times this year then all the years I have been living here combined.

I think it’s getting worse because it’s getting a bit warmer. I went out earlier in the day to try and brush off snow from some of the trees and then I went out to walk the dogs and the snow seemed much heavier. As I was reading this thread it sounds like we lost 4 or 5 major branches on trees right outside our side door. I’m sure the woods are going to be a mess. Most of the village where we live are without power, somehow miraculously, we’ve had some flickering but still have power. We lose it so often we have an automatic generator that runs much of the house so that works. Our neighbor across the street has an infant so if we lose electricity there’ll be a baby in the house once again!

I have been trying to call my parents all afternoon with no answer. I hope they are ok. They are probably at some friend’s house playing majong. I tried calling them on the cell phone I paid for, but they don’t like to turn it on to save electricity. I wish they would have told me they were going out. Sometimes parents behave more like children.

musicprnt ----wow.
Where are you ? I have relatives in Monmouth County, Freehold area?

We’ve lost power, and I’m losing my trees. They’re young, and not a threat to damage the house, but are bending in ways that Mother Nature did not intend. Bradfotd Pear has lost a chunk and the maples are drooping to the ground. So sad…

Rodney–we’re PSEG, and thankfully, we haven’t lost power yet, though lights have blinked a number of times.

My mom and sister live in different parts of eastern PA, and both are without power. Mom’s by herself, she has a backup pellet stove that has about a 10 hour battery, but this is the kind of weather that makes me wish she would move. her phone’s out, her cell has very little battery life, and she lives in the woods with only a few houses nearby. not good! My sister’s half an hour away in Allentown, also no electricity, and a tree across her driveway. I figure they’ll be okay, but I’m not happy with this!

My parents live in the Somerset county. I just called the police to ask them to check up on my parents. They were very nice on the phone. The problem is they have an electric gate. I am hoping they could get through. If my parents are there, I hope the police are not going to scare them off.

Some acquaintances who have a band played last night in New York and were supposed to be playing tonight in Hoboken. They are so sad cause their van is seriously stuck in the snow. Not sure where they are but they said " Even Black Flag wouldn’t go out in this!"

DH is in Boston for Parents Weekend with D1. They had dinner together, but she has Halloween party plans of course, so he is now alone in his hotel, with no power. A very unhappy camper :(

D2 just told me that all of her friends’ Halloween plans were cancelled in central Jersey.

I’ve turned the heat up expecting to lose power. The lights have been flickering quite a bit the last hour or so. The governor got on tv and said that if you lose power, you’re not going to get it back for a long time - the conditions are too dangerous for the crews to work.

DocT- which state ???

I’m in southwestern ct

South central New Jersey here. Gas powered radiant heat. Yay! Of course, just went to Costco and have about $200 worth of food in the freezer but maybe it will be cold enough to keep if we lose power. After Irene, we are well stocked with flashlights, batteries, candles.

Enough on the solar power companies and clean energy – can we please just work on the Northeastern grid? It is woeful.

My mother in Wilton, CT lost her power at about 3 this afternoon. She says that trees are bowed down to the ground, many broken. She lost power for a week after Irene. It is incredible that there is anything left to break…this sounds like an ice storm. She’s 88 and living alone, since my father died in 2010. I have nieces in the area, thankfully, and she is very robust. But it still is very worrisome.

Went to the mall to pick up a computer and drop one off for repairs. The roads were in poor shape but we made it there and back. It is about eleven miles away. We did not see any accidents or downed trees but we did see tree branches weighed down by the snow.

We had so much snow last year that pruned backed tree limbs that we shouldn’t have as many problems this year.

We have had a lot of power flickers, that is power outages for two or three seconds. Our internet service is currently down (I am on the iPad 3G) and I expect problems on and off tonight. We have lots of flashlights, some that will run for eighty hours on a charge.

The snow did change from heavy and wet to small. Daughter said that the snow has stopped but I didn’t check for myself.

Daughter just played with the router and has declared the Internet dead.

Less than 2" at my house and the spot in the driveway were DH’s car was parked until an hour ago is all black top.
Still, I lost a big branch from my Maple and one of my small dogwoods looks like it’s broken.

I have been watching the big tree in my backyard neighbors yard branches hanging precariously close to the power line.

I might take my broom and go out and see brush off some of the snow on my small trees.
