Book Club, Bridal Shower, Bible Study, Group Therapy, neighbor running for city council, voter outreach campaign…. I think I’m in a living room set up like this at least once a week!!!
Neither are particularly large bookcases.
There are MANY bookcases and books in his office AND in the garage!
You done good!
Is it my imagination, or is there one way out of the LR between the tiny table and the gray chair? People will need to file in and out one at a time. Also, I was picturing a tiny table in front of each seating place in the LR and a tv dinner on each tiny table.
Our house is only 2/3 the size of hers but has less than 1/2 the furniture. Even so we have more furniture than we need for just us and the kids when they visit. Crowded spaces are challenging and make living areas feel cramped.
#1 first prize goes to @Hoggirl for playing furniture & table tetris at her MIL’s & Bob’s house today! Seriously, well done. You have way more patience than the rest of us do.
My random thoughts on your MIL & Bob’s furniture store in no particular order:
- SO much furniture! Reminds me of my MIL’s primary bedroom. Every stretch of wall had furniture on it.
- Bob & MIL’s primary bedroom - the small desk behind the right-hand double door is an awkward location but meh, if they don’t like the location, they can move it later. Also, each of the bedside tables are like mini-dressers. Lots of room now in there for clothes storage. And now there’s almost enough seating in the primary bedroom to have their own Bunco game night in the bedroom! Even better.

- Living room/family room - all of the furniture arranged in a circle looks like the furniture is worshipping the rug. So it really is a prayer circle. Looks dumb but you set it up like your MIL wanted, so there ya go. I don’t know why they think they need enough seating in there to run a small church out of the house. Based on what you’ve said previously, it’s not like Bob has a bunch of people over at his place or anything on a regular basis…or EVER.
- guest bedroom - I don’t quite understand why, in their situation as 2 quite elderly retirees, one would need a big dresser in a guest bedroom. Unless it’s to store more of your stuff. I mean, it’s not like anybody else is going to be moving in with them into the 2000 sq ft house. If it were me, I would have ditched that dresser and figured out a way to put the big desk in there instead (i.e., the one that’s in front of the window in living room).
I’m having flashbacks to ALL of the furniture my MIL crammed into her 1500 sq ft house. And it was just her living there! Oh my gosh, so much!
The bedrooms look better than I expected. The living room looks silly but safe, and that’s all you can do.
And everyone gets their own spindly table for their snacks!
The bird lamp is definitely one of a kind. I hadn’t seen anything like it!
I just want to thank you for this thread and your sense of humor. It’s made me laugh daily.
I’m wondering if the living room is large enough to separate the space into two distinct areas - A TV watching area and an area to talk with four chairs round one of the tables.
AI could probably help with layout too ; )
Y’all are CRUSHING it with the comments! ![]()
For those of you concerned with the lack of spindly tables, I’ll attach the pic of them all lined up in the garage. (Actually, you can’t see all of them because some are behind those two Pembroke tables).
And, for those of you searching for bookcases, I’ll give you a sample from the office that I took when I showed up for duty this morning! Sadly, all the bookcases that are in the garage are on the opposite wall, and I didn’t take a pic of those.
That’s definitely a lot of extra tables & bookshelves!
Holy moly, you could open a small furniture store with all of that. Good grief!
OMG so true and so funny I almost sprayed my keyboard with my tea!!! ![]()
Several of those tables are quite substantial and one even has hinges so it can be bigger for more lamps & plants.
That’s the butler’s table they use as their coffee table
And I just so happen to have that same rug rolled up in a storage unit!

Chat GPT coming in clutch with my description, promptings, and requests:
Come Thou Fount of Rug Reverence
(to the tune of “Come Thou Fount”)
![]()
Come Thou Rug of spotless glory,
Call us to Thy woven ground.
Couches gather, chairs in silence,
In a circle, tightly bound.
Teach us fear of spills and scuffing,
Teach our feet to stay away,
Prone to lounging, we must fight it,
Prone to rest where we should not stay.

Here we raise our holy ottoman,
Here by Rug Thy rules are set,
And we hope by Thy good fibers,
No one dares a single leg.
Once a chair crept much too near Thee,
Chaos reigned and hearts were shook,
But we saved Thee from reclining,
Spilled not one drop, crumb, or nook.

O Thou Rug of careful keeping,
Guard our seating, firm and true,
Let our couches stay committed,
To the space they’re meant to do.
Prone to forget, yes, we feel it,
Prone to scoot a chair too far,
Bind our furniture forever,
Six inches back — just as Thou art.
