Bob expects to be the boss of the marriage, rather than a partner. Which also sounds “familiar” to MIL, based on your recollections of her former husband, and Bob.
Sil told her she believes him to be morally bankrupt and mean. Remember, he started pursuing mil while he was still married to wife #4, the now owner of the blue chair. Which, btw, belonged to wife #3. Mil said he was not mean, and sil brought up the times he has yelled at her. Told her it was only a matter of time before he was mean to/yelling at her. Mil just doesn’t think that’s going to happen.
I don’t want SIL to be right about this (because I wouldn’t want what she’s predicting to come to pass) but I think SIL is sadly right about this. And MIL has blinders on due to her own stubbornness and the high rate of speed that she ran into this marriage. She’s been willfully blind to so many red flags along the way.
if he runs out of money, she will be on the hook for the totality of their fees as each one is jointly and severally liable. He has MUCH less motivation to preserve his own assets. I’ve seen their balance sheets from the pre-nup. Now that mil has sold her house, her liquid assets are four times that of his.
Yikes on bikes. Bob got a nurse with a purse, and yes - it seems like he’s happy to spend now. I can only hope that she isn’t drained of her resources.
(I also can’t help but wonder why on earth he thinks he should be piloting a boat at his age, with his limitations; this seems like a disaster in the making.)
I wish SIL would cool her jets. What does she think being so confrontational is going to accomplish? While we may all think MIL was impulsive and that Bob is a PITA, what’s done is done.
I asked if he would do it solo, and mil said that he could, but that at his age he would probably always have a co-pilot. I hope that is what happens.
Bob, the son, and grandson are all big into sailing. Since the son doesn’t work, hopefully he will be available to assist when Bob wants him to. I do worry about Bob getting a hankerin’ to go out on a pretty day and if the son isn’t available, his ego nudging him to go solo.
Bob asked us at the dinner out if we enjoyed sailing. My dh said, “We’re pretty indifferent.” He told me later that there was no way he’d get on a boat that Bob was piloting. He would get on a boat his son was piloting. We’re really not interested in buddying around with them in a boat.
This is correct. All I know (because he (the son) told us at the Christmastime gathering that mil hosted) is that he had three open heart surgeries in three years. He also, as an aside, has alpha gal. He regaled us with tales about that at that gathering as well. Way too much medical talk for the first- (only) time meeting, IMO. He is the same age as my dh.
Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a serious, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction to red meat and mammal products (beef, pork, lamb, dairy) triggered by the bite of specific ticks, primarily the Lone Star tick in the U.S
.. Symptoms, including hives, severe stomach pain, and anaphylaxis, often appear 2-6 hours after ingestion.
He can eat no mammalian products. Which would make me very sad if I had it because no bacon or cheese, two things I love.
Ironically, one of the first times it manifested itself (before he was diagnosed) was when they were out on the boat.
