We know that TO early applications were up but that’s to be expected. Some of the increase will be from under-represented groups, and some will be from kids who were planning to apply anyway and were advised by their GC not to submit that 1400 . . . It’s hard to predict how any of that hints at an overall increase.
The Penn explanation was a tad odd, given that College Board’s own concordance tables between new and old test showed a notable difference in some score ranges. The PSAT/NMSQT commended cut off jumped from 202 to 209 in one year! Clearly the new test had a different scale system (and percentile chart). All this was well advertised on the internet. Most kids applying to elite schools are sophisticated enough not to be tricked by a new score system. My guess is that something else is going on.
