Anyone know how fast the leases go for living off grounds?

It seems like everyone’s signed already but keep hearing how there’s a housing surplus in charlottesville so its not like i should be in any hurry…

The landlords try to convince everyone there is a severe shortage and you have to sign a lease before Fall Break. The Parents Committee had a campaign to convince students that this was not the case. it is particularly an issue for first year students who don’t know people well enough to know who they would like to live with.

There is plenty of off-grounds housing in Charlottesville, and there are many apartments still available in August before school starts. That said, many apartments and houses deemed highly desirable by third and fourth years are already rented for the 2013-2014 school year. So, the answer really depends on where you want to live and how ready you are to jump now (i.e., do you have roommates lined up, etc.). If you prefer to wait, you won’t end up without a place to live. In fact, first year my son signed a lease in April for second year. For fourth year, though, he signed his lease in early October, and he wouldn’t have gotten his place in a newer building behind the Corner, if he had waited even a day.
