Official 2011 AP Chemistry Thread

gosh the free response was pretty bad. ughh i feel like the hours of studying just all went to waste. at least the MC wasn’t too rough. oh well the exam’s over now. now time to cram for APUSH. fun fun.

yeah your teacher should go over the frqs found in the green insert soon. hopefully my teacher will do that and it will give me a better idea of how i did. this is a good system cuz you can sort of predict your range of scores once you have time to work through the frqs after the exam.

Yeah, the frq’s were definitely a bit tougher but the multiple choice seemed easier than previous years with easier algebra imo. the curve usually is lower for harder tests like this one…

I think it’s 48 hours after the test so on wednesday. I thought the multiple choice was fair but certain part twos were extremely difficult.

Did you guys feel like there were trick questions? I felt it was pretty straightforward on the FRQ but maybe I didn’t read carefully enough, UGHHH = =wtheck

how much do u need to get for 3?
i didnt do well on mc but not terrible and bad on frq.
do i still have chance?

I think that, if most people here did bad, the curve will be generous. The FRQs were like nothing I’ve ever seen before, although I thought that the MC was easy. I’m hoping for a good grade, but who knows at this point.

Don’t forget to write the questions u want to discuss down because if u don’t u might forget. D: lol.

… I thought the FRQ was more than doable  Sure, it was in a more descriptive format, but it broke down to acid-base, a lab that most of us should have done before, and thermo/electrochem - stuff you should have been studying anyways.

I felt that the MC wasn’t all that bad, but the free response was really terrible, I really want to know what everyone else got :0

kirby22003, i don’t think you’re suppose to talk about the exam. Some people haven’t taken it because of the Enviro exam.

Everyone in my class thought it was really hard except for me, but I studied quite a bit. I only guessed on 3 MCs, although I’m sure I got some wrong due to careless errors because I ALWAYS do. For the FRQs, I only felt unsure on a few little subquestions, but I feel pretty confident about most of it. I also had at least 10 minutes per section to check my work… I wasn’t expecting to feel this prepared, especially if this year was harder than usual. I think my studying paid off!

Just curious though, do they send you your score breakdown in July or just 1/2/3/4/5?

Also, maybe they made it harder because you’re allowed to guess?

Do you guys agree that the curve will be much higher this year?

Just an fyi, AP exam curves are set BEFORE you even sit down to take the exam. It’s not set based on how everyone did.

This year what I think happened is, the original exam got leaked on the internet like a month ago, so the test writers had to rush to write another one, and in their haste, made it as hard as a freaking college final or something. They may or may not increase the curve, but all I’m saying is, if you had a hard time today, don’t expect a 5.

Personally, I got extremely lucky with my studying and knew how to do the majority of the free response sections pretty easily. As the years go on, the tests keep getting harder and harder because the course gets more and more advanced each year. Our class took a 1999 practice test the week before and it was maddeningly easy.

KeysUpOnTheTable - your theory about the test being leaked is, as far as I know, flat-out false. I’m not sure if AP curves are set before or after the exam, but I do know that all multiple choice questions are tested in college chemistry classrooms. Even if the curve is set before we take the exam, a harder exam will still have a better curve because the college students who piloted these questions will have performed worse.

It’s pretty blunt lmao.

You’ll get a letter in the mail like this (example if you got a 3):

AP CHEMISTRY 3

Sigh…
I guess I wasted my year in chem ap then…

Yeah the 1994, 1999, 2002, and 2008 exams were a lot easier in comparison with this years multiple choice…
:(

Guys…I know it’s early but does anyone know the percentage of MC and free response you probably have to get in order to get a 5? What about a 4?

They said it was 65% in past years for a 5… and like 50 to 55% for a 4… But they took away the guessing penalty…

60+/75 and -3 on each FRQ is a solid 5.
