Absolutely no guarantees. That’s why when I tell people about the scholarship, I always couch it in terms like “you’re in line for…” or “you might get…” But I understand that even schools that publish scholarship charts showing SAT scores and GPAs don’t always adhere to them. So in the search for merit money, you need to cast a wide net and expect the unexpected.

Electronblue, does your daughter have any other good options or possibilities? I’m sorry she didn’t get the Pitt scholarship. No explanation for that!

Yup, there are no guarantees for the scholarships. Your stats may be higher than what is required but perhaps they are looking for something else. It is very difficult to know what the scholarship committee is seeking – they may want more people from the state of Florida or New Hampshire – who knows! Like I have said before, be thankful if you get a scholarship but don’t be surprised if you don’t.

one of the comments they made when we called was that there was another student from my D’s school that had received a full tuition scholarship already and that may have played a role in her not receiving the full tuition scholarship.

Electronblue, if Pitt is still a consideration I would strongly suggest calling. Assuming your Ds gpa matches her test scores and her curriculum was the toughest available at her HS.

My daughter got into her first choice school ED with generously defined need-based aid so it’s a moot point for us. I just post as a cautionary tale to future applicants. You just never know how these decisions are made in a given year.

If you were eligible for need based then Upitt might have given you enough to cover most of the cost once your FAFSA was in- it is for us who are NOT eligible for need based that merit based becomes important.
Upitt has a better program like in Bio Eng than most Ivies so it is better to fight for ANY KIND of aid to get a good education.

I doubt Pitt would give an out-of-state student enough need-based aid. Most OOS publics don’t. They gap quite a bit. UMd gave my daughter some money, but we would have been required to pay about $10,000 a year above our FAFSA EFC.

Im with you electronblue. My D is waiting to hear from her top choice and they too have very “well defined” need based aid. She just wasn’t sure enough about her choice at the time to go ED. Plus her December test scores put the school much more within reach than her previous scores.

Congratulations to all who got admission and schaolarship.

Can some one tell me what will be the interview questions based on?
My daughter got an e-mail for interview. How many people are called for this interview every year and for how many seats?

Also, wanting to know when do we hear about the Chancellors scholarship

With all the postings on the full tuition scholarships, it gives the impression that it is easy to get one from Pitt. With the economy, I would not be surprised if the yield for their full tuition scholarships are higher than previous years. Check out their common data set – the numbers are up for the 2008-2009 year. It lists the number of scholarships (non-need and need-based) and the average amounts awarded for last year’s class.

1330/1930 sats, with a 96.5 gpa
i got into pitt but with no scholarship, but i got scholarships at tulane, Umiami, and more
i obviously wont be attending Pitt.

I hope that anybody considering what school to attend is not basing this decision solely on scholarship money. The bottom line comes down to the cost of attendance. For example, with the schools listed above:
Univ. of Miami - Tuition & Fees of $34,834 & Room & Board of $10,254 = $45,088
Tulane - Tuition & Fees of $38,664 & Room & Board of $9,230 = $47,894
Pitt A&S (oos) - Tuition & Fees of $23,650 & Room & Board of $8,300 = $31,950

You need a scholarship of $13,138 to make up the difference in costs between UofM and Pitt. This is not meant to offend anyone, just to emphasize that one needs to consider costs as well as scholarship dollars in considering between any schools.

sorry but i got more than 13,000 to both of those schools…
and not gonna lie, they are both better ranked and more prestigious than pitt.
i don’t see why pitt has such a huge gap for regular admissions and then to get scholarship money.

pgs, Univ of Miami, Tulane, and Pitt are all within the 50’s I believe, hardly distinguishable in terms of ‘ranking’. Also, what you might want to consider is that Pitt has a much larger student body and a very developed honors college. 20% of the class has over a 1400, which is over your score. Frankly, a girl with a 1250ish got spring admission. So a 1330 places you somewhere between the two. This is a very competitive year in terms of not only seniors but a harsh economy. Pitt is very cheap, scholarship or not, even OOS, and is on a upswing.

Also, a lot of different schools have different criterias for scholarships depending on what they need to make a good class. Maybe UM wants high CR scores, Pitt wants most NMF and Tulane wants most in top 10%. Same as admission to highly competitive colleges;; you might be what they wanted last year or the year before, but not right now.

As QuietType said, a 3/4s tuition vs. a full tuition is about the same absolute amount of money $25,000…so it is foolish to consider just the money aspects (though I don’t know whether you, pgs, are doing that).

Well that certainly is in consideration, but also you can’t go strictly by those usa rankings. SUNY Binghamton is number 77. I know many people who have gotten deferred and rejected from Binghamton and have gotten into Maryland, Penn State, and Pittsburgh, all in the 50s.

Is there anyone on here who got in with average scores. Like SATs in the 1500-1700/2400s or a GPA under 4.0. seems like every hear was overqualified for pitt and got full tuitions. anyone average

ha yeah the SATs were real good, my GPA is 3.72 with 9 honors and 1 AP class this year, but my SATs were in the 1500s overall. Idk im still waiting to here. My major is environmental studies. how hard is that to get into? i had a bunch of EC’s and volunteer work and wrote 3 essays?

DU50MH…As you probably read, my daughter has a 3.45 UW GPA and a 1270/2000 sat score. After asking for her semester grades, she was admitted to Pitt for the spring and put on the waitlist for the fall.

They told me that they do not count the writing score of the SAT, so if that is your weak spot, you should have a better chance.
