***Official 2014 Siemens Competition Thread***

Mine’s not even done yet lol… almost but not quite, but it’ll probably be 8-9 pages plus 4-5 pages of figures/illustrations.

don’t worry I’m in the same boat as you @elf4EVA‌ haha. Mine is at about the 9 page mark but my science research teacher wrote some pretty harsh comments so I’m basically stuck at my computer making tons of revisions now lol

What are all your projects on?

How did you guys come up with your project ideas? Were you assigned it by your professor/mentor, or did you come up with the idea on your own? If you came up with it on your own, how did you come about it?

Also, what prior knowledge did you have in your topic before you went knocking on college professor’s doors?

Finally, does anyone have tips for people who want to do research in computer science or in physics? I heard that it is much harder to do research in comp sci and physics than in biology/chemistry.

Just to confirm, they select the regional finalists by region, right? So some regions with less entries have advantages over others?

^Yes I think that’s correct. Any ideas about which regions are easier?

I wonder if this will increase our chances of getting into the colleges we want to get in even if we won’t win anything. If it doesn’t, what’s the whole point of all this?

I would guess the Mid-South region is the easiest (Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, etc.). That’s where I’m from, and I’m happy!

Densely populated region of California, represent!

So I need to start citing my references… kill me now

1 more day till the torture is over.

I just submitted everything today, but I didn’t see that they do not allow your name to be in the files or the title of the research report (you know, most research papers have the name under the title, and I was being careless, okay?) I emailed them asking if I could resubmit it. Has anyone ever experienced a similar situation? I really don’t want to be disqualified :(

Last 23 hours, lets go

For citations, are you using footnotes like [1],[2] or parenthetical notation like MLA?

Finished!!! But not before realizing that the limit is 18 pages DOUBLE-spaced, not single spaced, and having to spend an hour out about 4 pages…

@djgvolt‌ APA format only. I use internal citation like ex. (an1100345, 2014) and then if you want to refer to figures, you write (See figure 1). AND GUYS, THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT, NO IDENTIFICATION OF YOURSELF OR YOUR MENTOR AND TWO SPACES AFTER EACH SENTENCE!!!

Two spaces after each sentence? I sure hope that they don’t check that because it would be a pain to go through and add a space to each sentence

Does anyone know if I can I change the file after I press the upload button?
btw, I don’t think the 2 spaces is that important. They said the citations are supposed to be formatted based on the field you are submitting it from.

@FlyingWombat I don’t think you can change it after you submitted.

Good luck everyone!! 3 more hours till the the deadline!

Did you guys get any confirmation email after you press the Submit. I haven’t received a confirmation email.

Did anyone get a confirmation email after pressing submit?
