***Official 2014 Siemens Competition Thread***

I didn’t get an email notifying that I wasn’t chosen as semi/regional finalist yet…

Siemens just threw my three months of strenuous research in the garbage
I worked too hard to not get semifinalist
Can u submit to jshs as a team

@ivyyhopes‌ did you get an email saying you didnt get semi or regional finalist?

@ivyhopes do you know what the deadline for jshs is ?

@MrWiggles If you didn’t get a “regret to inform” email, that’s a great sign.

The reject letter looks like this:

Thank you for submitting your research report to the 2014 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. A record 4,428 students registered for this year’s competition and submitted a total of 1,784 projects for consideration. We recognize the extensive time and commitment involved in completing a research project for this competition and commend you for your efforts.

While your paper and research are noteworthy, we regret to inform you that you were not selected as a Semifinalist or Regional Finalist. However, students who participate in challenge-based learning opportunities such as this clearly possess the originality, persistence and dedication necessary for a successful career in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) related field. The work of doctors, scientists, engineers and mathematicians is in great demand, and by entering the Siemens Competition, you have already begun to involve yourself in the greater scientific community.

I got Semifinalist!
But let me get this straight, the people on the Semifinalist list will not be selected as a Regional Finalist?
If so, there are some people that I know on the Semifinalist list who were Google finalists, RSI participants, JSHS and ISEF 1st place category winners, which makes this year very competitive. Can anyone shed some light on the relationship between the Semifinalist and regional finalist lists?

Based on 2013 results, the semifinalist and regional finalist lists are mutually exclusive.

I did my research in bioinformatics at a really prestigious university, put in 12 hour days on a regular basis, and got significant results so I’m actually really disappointed (and slightly surprised) that I didn’t even make it to semis.

Is it worth it to submit to Intel STS if you didn’t make semis? I have college apps to do and I’d really rather not waste time submitting to something I’m not going to win, especially with STS and its behemoth of an application.

Those lists from 2013 were posted after semifinalist and finalist designations were released - here, the finalists will be chosen from the list of semifinalists.

Here is the verdict. Since my child didn’t make the list, I called the Siemens hotline Phone: 800-222-6098. They said, finalists are chosen from this semifinalists. Congrats to all those semifinalists. Good luck to you for the next round.

Sweet! I am so relieved to learn that I still have a chance to be a regional finalist and even national finalist.
Good luck to everyone!

Yep I got the “you lost” email

Yeah just to clear up any doubts, here’s what the Semifinalist email says: “We will announce the Regional Finalists on Monday, October 20th at 2:00pm EST. Please note that the Regional Finalists will be selected from the pool of Semifinalists this year. Good luck!”

tl;dr Finalists are chosen from the pool of Semifinalists

darn it-.- so disappointed I couldn’t even get semi. oh well, at least I think I got national merit, which soothes me a bit. you can’t win everything eh?

So does the whole “We only look at the Research paper” speel apply to choosing the Semifinalists? In other words, will judges look at Mentor Form info, etc. in deciding the regional finalists?

The website mentions the blind initial review process for choosing the Semifinalists, but not for the latter.

got Semi’s !! so excited. is it true they send the school a banner with our names on them?

Heads up: my Semifinalist email went to my spam folder so if you haven’t received anything check there.

@cthulukiller001
For those of you thinking of not applying to STS just because you didn’t make it to Semi in Siemens, think again.
Last year in my school, everyone who got semifinalist at STS (3 ppl) didn’t get recognized from Siemens, and those who got recognized by Siemens (1 senior + 2 non-senior teams) didn’t get recognized by STS. Just because you didn’t win one doesn’t mean you don’t have chance at the other.

Did anyone else get a call telling them that they’re regional finalists?

@flamex82828‌ did you?
