**OFFICIAL** AP Chemistry 2014 Thread

I highly doubt the logic behind making the curve harsh for AP chem. I’m predicting it will remain the same or get slightly more lenient.

The chem exam became harder, not easier, with the new format. They’re not handing out fives for recognizing chemical formulas and memorizing reactions. While Chem, like the new ap bio exam, switched to heavy conceptually based knowledge,
Chem concepts are generally more difficult than AP biology concepts to understand.

@DMAzai‌ , hopfully…

Were these the questions on this years test?
http://media.collegeboard.com/digitalServices/pdf/ap/ap14_frq_chemisty.pdf

Also I’m taking it on the 22nd as a late test, will mines be more difficult?

@Specula Yes that was the frq and no I’m pretty sure it’ll be the same difficulty

.

Does 54/60 (90%) on multiple choice and 29/46 (63%) on free response seem like a 5?

Yeah probably.

Honestly, I’m wagering a 5 will be anywhere between 65% - 75%.

Anyone know if we will find out any information about the curve before scores are released?

That AP Trevor guy usually releases what percent of people get a 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 sometime in June.

could 67% be a 5

Hey guys, Ill be taking AP chem this year as well, and I was wondering what review book I would need to get a 5 for sure? Would PR work ?

@Phoenix55555‌
I used a combination of PR and Crash Course. PR had okay practice tests, but Crash Course was very good in terms of content. I also hear that the Barron’s had good practice tests. If you want practice tests, go for the Barron’s but if you want good content and explanations, go for the Crash Course. Just keep in mind that Crash Course doesn’t have many practice problems.

I used Princeton Review’s and Barron’s. To be honest, I HATED Barron’s; I worked through the whole Barron’s guide (highlighting, answering the practice questions, doing the practice tests) for three weeks, and it was terrible. The Barron’s guide, in my opinion gave too much content, was difficult to understand (the acids and bases chapter, at least) and etc.

On the other hand, Princeton Review seemed TOO easy. But honestly, I felt like Princeton Review was closer to the actual revisions made to the exam (diagrams, charts, etc.). This surprised me, because the Barron’s guide for AP Biology was the best for the revised exam, so I presumed that Barron’s would be best for this new revised Chem exam.

Also, I thought the MC section was relatively easy. The FRQ’s are the difficult part; I failed them LOL.
You can see them on the College Board site :slight_smile:

(sorry for the long comment!)

@yoshithedino‌ really? Does Crash Course really cover all the material you need to know to get a 5 on this exam ?

@Phoenix55555 No. It doesn’t.

However, what it does to is give you an amazingly condensed outline of the Collegeboard curriculum found in the Course Exam Description. What I did was use it in combination with the Bozeman science videos, which do the same thing while looking at the CED all at once. I found it much more helpful concerning the test itself than merely taking practice tests from books like Barron’s.

The new test is indeed conceptual and requires you to apply the concepts you should learn. The comprehensive and thorough understanding provided by those three resources are very helpful and should at LEAST get you a good score on the MC, with the FRQ’s being… a bit more of a hit-or-miss (were not what I was expecting at all).

tl;dr

Crash Course is an awesome resource. You may not necessarily be able to pull a 5 on the test with only Crash Course, however, so I would highly recommend utilizing it in combination with other resources. :)

@Phoenix55555‌ I would avoid Princeton, it is extremely general. I love Barron’s and use them for almost every test prep lol. I would also suggest using an SAT subject prep book, the questions helped me in preparation for the actual test because it trained me to find essential info, and how not to be confused by questions.

Hmmm alright, I got a 780 on SAT chemistry, so chem is definitely one of my stronger subjects… Taking that into consideration, would you say PR or CC is enough for a 5, because Barrons is like 700 pgs long

@Phoenix55555‌ Absolutely go for CC. I totally had forgotten about the Bozeman videos, but they were very helpful! I read the entire CC and watched the Bozeman videos to reinforce stuff that I was weaker on. However, as much as I love the Crash Course youtube videos, they’re far too long and aren’t conducive at all to studying, so I don’t recommend those videos.

Alright thx guys !!
