Official AP Chemistry Thread (2014-2015)

@glasshours the number of 5’s were almost 2% lower than last year’s, which doesn’t seem like a lot but it is. I’m not feeling too comfortable after seeing the 8.4%.

are we going to disregard the fact that 76.4% of people scored 3 or lower

A 3 is a pass, although you might not be happy with a 3. Regardless, the score distribution is roughly equivalent to LY, so I’m not sure why anybody would have been surprised.

It’s out of 150,000 people so don’t base your confidence off of the distributions guys… I made that mistake last year with AP Biology. Less than 40% passed and I was positive that out of so many people and 50 states, my chances were low but it came back as a 5 and my entire class passed too, so I try my best to not freak out over the score distributions anymore lol. Scores always end up surprising people…

@cocolover123 “Scores always end up surprising people” lol I’m probably going to get surprised with a score I didn’t want.

Wait. we had 60 MC questions, and 46 FRQ points. How can the exam be out of 100?

@michelle426 10 MC questions are experimental and don’t count so its 60-10=50 points. Your FR score is the number of points out of 46 times 1.0869 to scale it to 50.

Ah i see. Thanks.

In general, yeah. Again, @Dorfdude8, CB would’ve made an official statement if it was a misprint, so I wouldn’t put my bets on that. But who knows, right?

The score distributions make me so nervous. I just want my scores.

@polarknut Lol me too I wish we could see them now

Ugh I’m so scared… I’m pretty sure (or at least hoping) that I got a 40+ on the MC. I at most got 10 points off for FRQ. Is that enough for a 5?

@michelle426 That should be a 5, assuming they didn’t jack up the cutoff score by a ton from last year. I’m assuming they increased to around 75 or 76 based on last years 72 cutoff which should have been a 38 MC and 34 FR w/ +15 min.

@pillowspillows meh, they made the cutoff for FRQ 31 last year due to the timing shortage. I can’t believe I have to wait until July 10th…

@michelle426 July 10th?! :open_mouth: :frowning:

For preparation: I took Honors Chemistry then AP Chemistry the next year. In January of the AP year, I got an 800 on the chemistry subject test by basically reading the entire prep book. We did a lot of preparations in class and all of this really helped me. Both practice tests I received 5s on and am confident that I got a 5 with this preparation, though it looks a little over the top

^ I also took honors (over the summer) for AP Chemistry. It did really help! Good job on the subject test :slight_smile:

@pillowspillows does the extra 15 min have the potential to jack up the score by that much?

@polarknut not necessarily. originally, when the redesign was introduced, they originally decided to make the cutoff for a 5 on the FRQ a 34. However, upon realizing that the majority of students did not have the time to finish the test, they made the cutoff last year a 31.This year, they added an extra 15 minutes (I finished with like 45 minutes left to spare…) so they could return the original scoring. Regardless, the cutoff for the AP test will NEVER be above 75 or 76%, that is much too high. I think the cutoff will be around 74 this year, with 75% being the highest possible.

@michelle426 I hope you’re right. Last year’s original cutoff was a 75.

I honestly wished they didn’t give us the extra 15 min and kept the cutoff a little bit lower because I had 10 or 15 min to spare.

I predict that I got around a 76 so I hope it is 75 max. Cross you fingers.
