Official Biomedical Sciences Interviews/Acceptances 2009

So, should I take that Stanford Biosciences is pretty much done?

I would think Stanford’s finished, but I’m not certain that we’ve heard from all the home programs yet. If you feel like asking them in an email, it would be much appreciated.

Fishy and Mitten (and other wretched souls)- I just called Stanford. The lady said that though all the decisions have been made, they only officially began notifying a few days ago. None of them have finished, and this will continue into the end of the 2nd week of February, she said. I asked specifically about Cancer Biology (since many of us are waiting for that) and she said they’ve started yesterday but should be far from being done. She was very nice about it, too.

Let’s not lose hope yet!

Was not expecting that response! I wonder why they contact people over such a large period of time? Seems strange.

I am a Canadian applicant with Bsc at Canadian university. If I don’t hear from UCSF bioinfo by tomorrow, I think it’s done. I already lost my hope on Harvard systems biology since it has been 1 week past the interview notification.

Yeah, I can’t imagine… A few weeks ago someone said they got an interview for Caltech Bio so I thought it was finished for me- but then I got one yesterday. And their school is so much smaller too… go figure.

I guess it makes sense then, since Stanford Biosciences has over 100 enrolled students per class, divided into all the depts, and that number is probably ~30% of the total admitted since the rest go to Rockefeller or Harvard or something.

bernardzhu,

I received an offer to interview from UCSF Bioinformatics yesterday. I have heard they are extremely competitive for international students due to NIH being a large source of funding. Your profile is better than mine, and I hope you can beat the odds. Good luck.

For the sake of thread participation, this is my progress so far with Bioinformatics/Computational Biology applications:

Applied: UCSF, UMich, CMU-Pitt, WUSTL
Interview: UCSF, UMich
Rejected: WUSTL

I also applied to 4 CS programs, but I suppose that isn’t relevant to this thread. Good luck, everyone.

UCSF TETRAD invitation to interview by phone today. I’m going on an off day.

Waiting on: Mt. Sinai Cancer Bio, Wisc Cancer Bio, Arizona Cancer Bio, Nebraska Cancer Research, Sloane, UPenn CMB
Interviews: U Mich PiBS, Einstein, City of Hope, UVa MCDB, UWa-Seattle MCB, Baylor MCB, UCSC MCDB, Northwestern IBiS , UCSF TETRAD
Accepted: None
Rejected: None

ymmt - thanks for sharing! I look forward to hear about any of the fellow CC Cancer Bio people as they get invites. (You guys all seem spectacular from what I’ve heard -I hope you all get an invite)

And Fyi for Penn people: CAMB just started sending notifications about their second interview weekend. :)

roxannecellbio: I was contacted via phone and the date I was given was Feb. 6

I am finished with hearing from schools.

For future generations, here’s my information:

4 research projects (1 biological, 1 bioinformatics, 2 computer science)
1 first author conference paper
1 technical report
1 poster

4 recommendations

All applications finished by mid November.

Just got an interview for UCSF Tetrad!!!

I’ll be going Feb. 6th as well, see you there! Also, I asked and they said they are inviting about 70 people and only accepting 20. So odds are still very low but I’m just excited to get a chance to interview.

when is UPenn 2nd interview weekend? Do they email?

Roxanne,

Their second interview weekend is 26th-28th of February. I got a note via email today. (CAMB)

brain_aging: could you please add your results to the database here, for future generations

jpell, thanks for your information. I figure that the bioinformatic applicants are not so active on this thread. I think the interview notifications for bio programs are wrapping up now. Let’s check back on CS admissions in early to mid Feburary. Good luck!

Has anybody heard anything from neuroscience program/track at Rockefeller, Mount Sinai or UCSD?

I have not heard from Rockefeller and they assured me that this doesn’t mean anything bad.

phanta: Regarding the 20 students admitted out of 70 invited to interview for UCSF Tetrad, how many do you think they extend offers to? I would think that they extend many more offers since alot of their interviewees may also choose to go to Stanford, UC Berkeley, Harvard, Rockefeller, etc… At least I hope so, ha

I don’t think any school can expect 100% retention so I would guess that they make offers to at least 40 people.
Even that I find surprising, considering how costly it is to fly someone.
