morningmist, don’t be so hard on yourself. i’m assuming you applied to PIBS, which department was your number 1, though? i heard while i was there that the micro & immuno was going to be tough to get an acceptance after the interview. that also may be true for some of the other departments.

roxannecellbio, thanks for all the information. It seemed a little strange that such a large university would take so very few. Honestly it made me a little worried for the funding in the department. I think the guy at Yale much have had the number he heard confused with those that accept admission, not the number of people offered admission. Besides he said he had been offered admission and I would think if they were only offering a few they would wait until all interviews were done.

How did your interviews go there? Were they fairly easy going or did they grill you? Did you get to see and labs there? Were they in well equipped and in good condition? Currently my husband is working in a brand new lab so he’s more than a little spoiled (especially since the last lab he worked in could barely pay to fix the autoclave when it broke).
Thanks again for all the help!

I can speak to the Micro dept at the University of Michigan. I got rejected (pre interview) from this program. I received interviews from 8 out of the 10 places I applied including schools like Duke, UNC, Baylor, Minnesota etc. I suspect that Michigan Micro was unable to take as many students or had some other strange criteria that was inconsistent with their peer institutions. Don’t feel bad, who wants to live in the epicenter of unemployment in the frozen tundra of the midwest anyway.

to morningmist,
hehe, I was on hold for MSU… don’t know why, maybe when they ask me do you have other interview I said yes I went to others like madison blablabla and my boyfriend is applying medical school there… I thought it went well, but…
Totally understand that people got rejected after interview, if wasn’t have interview, we will think it is some other reason, but after interview, will think it is because we are not good enough… really don’t like this feeling though

Acceptances:
MIT Biology
Rockefeller

Interviews:
Stanford

Probably rejected:
Harvard BBS

Acceptances:
Yale MCGD
Harvard MCB
MIT Biology

Interviews (declined):
Princeton Molbio
Cornell BCMB

Probably rejected:
Columbia biology
UChicago

Decision: MIT Biology!!! :)

fayrlite,

My interviews went really well there. They didn’t grill me - mostly they wanted to tell me about the MCB program and about their own research, after I summarized my own experience. There were no official lab tours, but one or two professors showed me their own labs and the shared facilities (this was at the Hutch though; I didn’t get to see the lab facilities at UW). Your husband should definitely ask to see some labs. I’ve heard that professors and grad students both like that - it shows you are interested. I am not sure how your husband’s interview format will go. I interviewed with three people one day at the U, then one day with three people at the Hutch. That two-day format was a little nerve-racking…but I have a feeling that’s unique to the MCB program because of its focus on the Hutch.

So again about the lab facilities, I only saw those at the Hutch. The Hutch itself is really beautiful and modern. Again, I only saw the facilities for one or two labs, and I believe there are shared facilities for each floor on each wing, so that should not be a problem if your husband wants to do his research there. I have no idea about the actual university though.

Umm… how do you guys have acceptances from MIT biology already?
I have an interview there in two weeks… I guess it’s rolling?

Also how did you guys feel about the flexibility of the classes there?

To shnjb:
I got my acceptance 3 days after my interview. The grad students said it depends how long the paperwork (evaluation) is collected. The quicker, the faster the decision.
I heard that they invited around 120 people for interviews this year and are accepting about 100. Therefore anyone got interview invitations have a very high chance of getting accepted.
I chose to go to MIT biology because I like their first year program the best.
And the professors are awesome!

LOL. Thanks guys. But I’m sure those who are still waiting for a yes from ANYONE will agree with me - it would be nice to have at least on acceptance in my pocket.

Onward, ho!

Hi, has anyone heard back from duke biochem about the admission decision? And JHU BCMB?
Thanks.

@morningmist10

Don’t feel bad. I only applied to 3 “reach” schools… I’m still waiting!!!

Oh well, if i don’t get in I’ll just try a bunch of places next year – and travel all year this year!

Lily North,
I got emailed my acceptance of JHU BCMB this past monday, but I had interviewed their without the other recruits cause I had just tacked on an extra day to another weekend. Good luck.

Also, this sounds ridiculous, but for anyone who visited Baylor for biochemistry, was it fun? I feel completely over the whole interview process and I’m happy with my acceptances and I’m not sure if I can take another weekend. But if anyone’s already been to one of their weekend, did they take you out and have lots of activities, was it very social, what did they do at night? I know this is a silly basis for going out for an interview, but even though I’m interested in the school, I need a carrot on a stick to make it through another weekend.

Has anyone interviewed at Weill Cornell heard from them yet?

Thank you! :)

I also interviewed at Cornell and am waiting impatiently for the news. Doesn’t seem like anyone from that interview block had a response yet, if the Gradcafe survey is any indicator

has anybody been reimbursed for their interview weekends yet? my first interview was Jan 15, and I still haven’t recieved my reimbursement… the person handling reimbursement said she was going to start processing them on Feb 9, but I have no sense of how long this processing takes. I don’t want to keep pestering her, but it’s been a while…

Haha, my interview was the last week of Jan, and the person told us that they would process it right way, but the office that does all the reimbursements for the university usually gets back to you within a year or so… I think I’ll just forget about it and treat the money as a surprise present in a year. :)

just offered an admission from Harvard Organismic and Evolutionary Biology
some feelings written on my blog:

Wish every undergrads and M.D.s here good luck! :)

I am also anxiously awaiting news from Weill Cornell- I think it is my top choice, although they did tell us it would take about 3 weeks. Also I have not yet received any reimbursement checks and was wondering when it was appropriate to inquire about that…

I have question about interviews. I had a really good impression of one school I visited and it is my top choice so far… however, running into other students later on (at other interview weekends) I asked their opinion and they had a totally different impression. I thought the grad students were friendly and open and fun, but other people thought they were “forced” and “didn’t really want to be there.” Should I trust my own opinion, or that of multiple other people? Do you think I could have had a very unique experience? Oh, these students were also at the same weekend as I was and also were admitted. One of them is still considering that school as their first or second choice, but this is because of other reasons besides the happiness of the grad students…

Any opinion is appreciated. Thanks!
