Of course other schools want you to commit by May 1st so unlikely to work for them. Also got in to Cal Baptist so need to check their guidelines
Hi @Gumbymom , I am transfer from Cuesta (no one will reply to this on the transfer board and I’m dying to know). I got an F on a design class in Fall. Very unfortunate, am embarrassed, but trying to find a way to right the wrong. It’s not a required or desired course and I’ll still be over the 60 unit threshold for transferring. If I’m admitted will I have my admission revoked? I talked to a Cuesta counselor about it and they said most likely not because it’s not technically important for my major or for GE’s.
What is my best course of action?
Thanks to all in advance!
My D got accepted to Mech. Eng. (OOS) 1440 SAT, 4.2 CU gpa, Don’t know MCA score but extra points for all coursework except English and holds a part time job 15 hrs per week (so extra points for that as well).
@humanacidtrip Good Luck!
@Baylorpoly, acceptances off the wait list are rare. They admit based on expected yield and only go to the wait list if they don’t hit the number. For example, if they have 100 spots for major X and expect a 33% yield, they will actually accept 300 students, expecting 100 to accept admission. If they don’t hit 100, say 90, then they drop to the wait list. It’s uncommon at Poly since their yields are actually going up. Hope that makes sense. Good luck.
Regarding waitlisted applicants and acceptance, you can check the common dataset for each previous year. Last year there were 1598 waitlisted applicants and 67 admitted. For 2014, there were 1603 waitlisted with 15 admits. Basically do not count on it unless as stated by @eyemgh the yield is low.
As for @jwilli: I would contact admissions and get the information direct from the source. Usually in the provisional admisson contract, you need to maintain your current GPA with no D’s or F’s
My son got waitlisted for Biomedical Engineering a few years back. His friend got into a number of honors engineering programs at other schools and got rejected from CP. He called admissions and they said, “We have so many applicants to that major that have above a 4.0 - we do a lottery for admissions” So sad that after all that hard work in high school - it comes down to a random lottery. Not what you would expect from a top rate school.
I’ve asked and they said it’d most likely go up for a review. However, these reviews vary year by year and they aren’t revealing at all about what the most likely outcome would be from that review. The one last thing I could do is just to wait and sent all my transcripts after the Spring semester and do my best to get a 4.0 in Spring. Would they look at that semester and almost basically forgive fall? I know that sounds very kiddish, but Im slightly freaking out because I wish to attend so badly.
@Coffeelover9, that’s a figure of speech. They do not do a lottery of any kind. They rank by MCA. The fact is for s few majors, BME being one of them, it is EXTREMELY competitive. The average GPA for CENG is well over 4.0 and that includes several majors that are not competitive. The admissions process now is brutally simple…beat the MCA cutoff, get in…don’t, don’t. There is zero randomness, zero lottery. There’s no need. The MCA provides a ranking. As a result, LOTS of highly qualified candidates get rejected. In fact last year, Poly rejected more than 6000 students with CSU GPAs of 4.0 or better. It’s a bummer, but at least it is objective.
Makes sense that if he isn’t accepted it’s time to move on. Will wait til Friday to accept fate
MCA includes extracurricular activities and Cal Poly has no way of knowing about activities on their application(no essays, list of leadership activities, total number of service hours). When our valedictorian got rejected from CP she decided to go to UCLA. Their app. appreciates a well rounded, active, bright student. Not convinced the lottery was a figure of speech. My son’s friend questioned the admin. person on this.
@Coffeelover9, that is the strength and weakness of the MCA, it does not distinguish quality of ECs. An Olympic level skater (a sport CP does not have) gets the same EC bump as the member of Spanish Club.
For certain majors, ME, Aero, CS and BME in particular, it’s not uncommon for students who get into UCLA and UCB to be rejected by Poly.
I’m not arguing it’s better or worse and certainly it has strengths and weaknesses, but I know how the system works because I have the complete algorithm and it was verified by the director of admissions. There is no randomness. There is no lottery. It is completely objective. Whether you agree or not with what’s in the algorithm is another story.
Accepted bio major on portal, haven’t gotten email yet - 4.2 CSU GPA 33 ACT
Post to the status, MCA, major thread. Congrats!
has anyone who applied for liberal arts heard back yet? when can we expect those to come out?
@maxy101 nope, none of us have heard back. I’m waiting on GrC, how about you?
English. thought got rejected cuz my portal status hasn’t changed & haven’t heard from any liberal arts people. hopefully tomorrow we’ll hear stuff
What decisions are predicted to be released tomorrow?
And what time do we expect them to start coming out?
@eca1998 it seems like decisions started coming out in the early morning on Friday and continued pretty late so hopefully we hear sooner than later!
@EnviroChris CAFES and CLA haven’t released decisions yet so my guess would be those two
