momalot, pretty sure that I said that not all of the females in those respective schools had “mediocre scores.” It’s just a common fact that they admit more females with mediocre scores than they do male. Never, however, did I say that every single female admitted were “mediocre.”

I wrote how CMU could help me get there and how its excellent job placement skills were a huge plus. I only made one draft of the essay and no-one else read it though, so it probably wasn’t as pristine as most essays.
Teacher Recs: Probably impersonal and generic praise from one. The other (a math teacher and my math coach for 4 years) let me read his and he wrote really good generic praise and a few specific achievements.
Counselor Rec: I never really met him, but he loves me. They love all the smart ones…
Applied on: I discovered that I wanted to go to CMU when a friend sent me a list of the best computer science schools, then I wrote my app and submitted it the day it was due.
Hook (if any): None! I’m a white, middle class boy who has never had any serious problems. I work, get enough of my stuff done, and have fun when I can.

Strengths: um, i feel i had a strong portfolio, but i dont really have a "good’ portfolio to compare mine to. i liked mine though. fairly strong academics
Weaknesses: sat physics score, essays werent extraordinary, didnt show much enthusiasm about going to the school (i.e. visiting, etc)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: idk really, but im glad i am (but i heard that CFA is a bit easier to get into, so maybe that helped too)
