Decision: Accepted (Humanities and Social Sciences)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I (by section): 730 CR, 800 M, 730 W (2260 total)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Chinese w/ Listening, 770 Molecular Biology, 730 U.S. History, 800 Math II
[] ACT: N/A
[] APs: Biology (5), Chemistry (5), U.S. History (5), Macroeconomics (5), English Language and Composition (5), Spanish Language (5)
[] IBs: N/A
[] GPA (UW): Can’t be bothered to calculate unweighted… I’ve got a 4.04 weighted (we get a .5 weight for each AP/Honors class)
[] Rank: My school doesn’t rank, but my counselor guesses around top 5-10%
[] Other stats: Not quite sure what this is asking for…
[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Varsity swimming for four years, President of Habitat for Humanity, National Honor Society, various other sports not worth mentioning
[] Job/Work Experience: Bus monitoring (2005-present), summer camp swim instructor (2008), various hours of lifeguarding
[] Essays (subject and responses): Common App essay was about Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat - how it’s important to recognize nuances in a person’s personality and not generalize Supplement essay… I’m having problems even remembering as I haven’t looked at it in more than 3 months. I got accepted for economics at H&SS but that’s a joint degree with Tepper Business… so I wrote my essay on how I got interested in the subject (basically, my dad explained to me the laws that govern Pokemon card trading). Lighthearted, fun introduction that grew into an actual interest.
[] Teacher Recs: Didn’t read them, but I know both of the teachers really well, so I hope they were good
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read this either, but I actually know my counselor pretty well
[] Applied on: Just after Christmas? My winter break had just started and I was bored so I figured I might as well do the app

Not sure if I’m headed to CMU yet, but we shall see. Congratulations to those who were accepted and good luck to all - perhaps I’ll meet some of you in the future!

has anyone found out through snail mail, or are all of these via online only? i am choosing to wait for the regular mail.

[] Job/Work Experience: Interned at some company and did stuff like catalog design, photography, and photo editing.
[] Essays (subject and responses): Common app was about silence. Somewhat abstract / poetic / rather quirky and weird in general. Supplement was a bit meh. I really wanted to apply for SCS or the arts school, but I missed the deadline for the arts one and I didn’t take a science SAT II that was required for SCS. But I somehow managed to link my interests with my declared department.
[] Teacher Recs: Probably good.
[] Counselor Rec: Most likely good.
[] Applied on: Day before deadline! Go procrastination.
[] Hook (if any): I sent in an arts supplement anyway, bahaha.

[li] Gender: F[/li][/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Probably not going to CMU since I got into Stanford (aweoirj;awer)… but I really like CMU. Congrats to everyone else who got in!

I just want to tell all of the kids who are told that they got in because they have a “hook”…female/URM etc. DON’T LISTEN TO THEM! CMU wants to be the best school in the nation and they decided that this means producing graduates who are multidisciplinary, curious and smart. Look past the stats of the students and see how many of the kids successfully applying for science or SCS also sent in an art supplement or are gifted musicians, or applied for art but have excelled in the sciences. If you just compare stats it looks odd that a really high SAT seems to be trumped sometimes by pretty high but not wow scores. But continue to read the list of ECs and essay descriptions and it starts to become clear that CMU is putting together a class of students with many different talents and backgrounds. My son decided CMU was his first choice when they told him the SCS students will have to minor in something outside of comp sci! Kids who thrive in multidisciplinary, multiethnic, multilingual environments are what CMU is looking for as well as smarts so be proud of your accomplishment!

Thank you, fineartsmajormom! That is beautifully put. CMU does an incredible job in drawing multi-talented and wonderful students, and all admitted students (and their families) should be very proud.

To ignore the fact that the SCS and CIT schools accept more females with mediocre scores is foolish. It’s obvious, in no matter what university, that the engineering schools tend to try to justify their lopsided male-to-female ratio.

I’m sorry, but it’s the truth.

Nonetheless, that is just considering the scores of the applicant, not the whole application itself. I am not trying to take away from all of the females here who got in these respective schools. There is more than to the applications of each individual applicant than what you see on CC. Keep that in mind, Geekma92.

Decision: Accepted to IS

First let me tell you my kind of weird and depressing CMU story.

So I applied ED2 to SCS and RD to IS. The CMU “Where am I in the process” page said that I was “not admitted” to SCS and that I was “withdrawn” from IS.

So I assumed that my chances with CMU were dead. I retook the SATs in Jan and got a 730CR/800M/800W. CMU only got my 730CR/740M/800W.

Well I got into IS with my 730CR/740M/800W. Gah, now I’m thinking that I may have gotten into SCS if I applied RD with 730/800/800.
