** Official Class of 2017 University of Michigan EA Decisions Thread **

No I don’t  Also… sorry that you haven’t heard back yet haha

Yeah, it sucks. I don’t want to wait all the way til April just to find out i’m rejected

“some overqualified students have been differed, but again that is because MICH does not believe they will attend. In this case I would just show interest if its your top choice, and you should be accepted early april.”

This is untrue. It’s a common rumor about Michigan, but it is completely false. Michigan does not defer students because they are too qualified and they never have. Michigan is still a subject of the state, and having an admissions policy like that would get them into huge political trouble. More than likely, the “overqualified” students who were deferred had a mediocre essay, so-so recommendations, a lack of extracurriculars, an easy course load, or some other possibly small deficiency. If the deficiency is small, they will still stand a pretty good chance in the RD pool though.

That said, showing interest is certainly not a bad idea since it is something Michigan claims they care about.

@anotherHSER how would we show interest? writing a letter?

Hey all you deferred kids. I have posted this a few times and will just this one last time. Do not give up. Several kids from my son’s school and other friends were deferred last year and many got in. There are so many kids with great stats, ECs etc-who knows what they look for the first time through. Remember they look for diversity-NOT the type of diversity you first think of, but diversity of interests, etc. There are tons of kids applying with great mock trial experience, with student council experience. Think about how many schools there are in this country - each one has a class president and valedictorian. In this first round they may be going after some kids with different types of credentials (i.e. being chosen for leadership programs, extensive MEANINGFUL volunteer service) cause there are SO MANY excellent candidates with great grades and test scores. And remember comparing gpa’s is like comparing apples and oranges. They know the schools and the class loads. So it may not make sense to us but they may be looking for something different at this point. But don’t assume deferral is the end.

Last Trimester, I got 3 As, but one B+ (Chemistry) and one B- (German 3A after missing a year of German). What… should I send those scores? Or 2nd Tri scores instead?

Has anyone heard today?

Shady - Do you have connections? I hear they are in a different pool.

Makes sense… When do you think those are coming out

And where’d u hear that from

I think I read it on a thread from last year.
But, there are still people who haven’t heard who don’t have connections. We haven’t heard. And nothing on WA.

Will they send out things today? And at what time?

My son had 33 ACT, 3.59 GPA unweighted, 4.31 weighted. Lots of APs, scored two 5’s, one 4, one 3. 790 and 720 SAT2, varsity athlete, NHS, amazing internship, focused on medicine, great recs, ok essays.

@Shady4pres I have a big legacy, quadruple one in fact (2 grandparents both parents)

“Comparing GPAs is like comparing apples and oranges”

This is why I never understood the emphasis on GPA at universities across the nation. (Of course I’m biased because that’s the weakest part of my app, but…) The mix of high schools really does make it difficult to compare. Some schools make it insanely difficult to get the A’s; others make it insanely easy and inflate their students’ chances. I know that admissions takes into account school culture, but in the end it was pretty clear from these results (and the results at my school) that they put an inordinate amount of emphasis on GPA. And just the number, not anything else.

There’s nothing I can do about this but work harder, and I hope I don’t sound like I have sour grapes. That’s just always been my opinion on the subject. Test scores are much easier to use to directly compare students, yet I always hear admissions downplay their importance and pump up GPA. Which, for the above reasons, doesn’t make a ton of sense.
