Official Columbia University Early Decision 2016 Thread

I still don’t even want to think about getting deferred, the idea of having to wait more months to know would kill me…

Yeah, I’m trying to prepare myself for a rejection, because I know statistically that it’s the most likely outcome, but I can hardly get my mind to stray from an acceptance, just because I know that even though the chance is slimmer, there is still a chance of that.

I’m sure it’s the same way for all of us, though, because we wouldn’t have spent the time an effort applying if we didn’t believe we had a shot.

When are we gonna make a stats thread? Ya know the ones with the fancy colors and categories with template? We needa get on that these next two dayyysss.

^ I don’t think I have a shot at MIT but I applied anyway :p

@Jack: I think someone is scheduled to make that already… Look back a couple of pages…

^Neiro6 is I’m pretty sure

@jack: yep, i believe @neiro6 is making one. and we agreed on making one and only. he is making it thursday morning so it doesnt get buried. its stats only too.

I know, I keep telling myself don’t get my hopes up and my friends tell me don’t worry I will get in, but its hard to believe. I try not to sound negative or jinx myself, but I don’t want those high hopes and have to fall back to reality if it is a rejection. Not to mention if I get rejected on my birthday that’s going to suck even more… I regret telling some of my friends I applied though…
ugh I just want to know already.

Yeah, I think it’s important to remember that even though we all think Columbia is the place for us, we’d likely be just as happy at many other places. Yesterday I went and looked at the websites of some of the other colleges I’ve also applied to and that was extremely helpful in cheering me up, so you might consider doing that as well.

I have, although not Ivy I applied to all my state colleges, and UCF is still one of the top public schools, and they accepted me and offered me a scholarship which is a good fall back if anything! I just need to finish the Honors college app but I am still waiting on Columbia’s decision, not motivated to do anything…

Oh wow! I’d be a lot more cheerful if I were you, I haven’t received any acceptances, much less scholarships! I haven’t even really applied to any safeties except for UCSB, and they’re actually known for rejecting highly-ranked applicants from my school, so even that is not really dependable. And, I know the feeling, every college I would apply to if I didn’t get into Columbia has at least one supplement, and even though I know I should have started on those, I really can’t muster the motivation to do so.

I know exactly where you’re coming from. Its just hard, and now that I have missed the cut off dates for most early decisions I am even less motivated because I want to start planning where I am going to go and live, and determine what I need to do. I just want to know where I will live already! Did you apply to any other Ivies?

The only applications I’ve submitted aside from Columbia are ones to UChicago (EA), UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSB. I want to stay in a large city, and although I like the environment better at Cal than I did at UCLA, I’m definitely attracted to UCLA because of its location.

As I live in an area that could be considered a “suburb” of LA, I find that I’m gravitating to a lot more schools that wouldn’t have that feeling due to their location, and therefore I’m less attracted to other Ivies. In general, I don’t think most of the other Ivy League schools would be a good fit for me because I started wanting to attend Columbia after hearing about the Core Curriculum (which was before I learned they were in the Ivy League), but I might take a second look at Dartmouth.

What are some of the other colleges you’re thinking about?

I know this is uber-cheesy, but no matter the decision turns out to be, at least we had this forum and all the wonderful people in it to keep us sane these past couple of weeks. we should congratulate those who get accepted, but for the rejected, we should also know that there are other schools out there waiting for us to apply so that they can offer us admission! : )

^ And I think something important to take away from that is that Columbia really is just 1 school, and there are so many other ones…

I would love to live in California, I used to live in Washington State the smallest town possible, and then I moved to Florida where I’m about 30 minutes from Orlando. I really have only looked into mostly Florida schools, UF, FSU, UCF just because we have bright futures which makes your yearly school payments only 1,000-2,000$ with the highest level of the scholarship. However I would die to move away from Florida. I love the big city feel, and I looked into Stanford and UCLA, but Columbia is really the only Ivy I have applied for. Although I’d die if I got in, I feel like the other Ivies wouldn’t suit me as much as I’d like. I love the strong curriculum but some of them lack the social aspects or just don’t fit me due to their locations and surroundings. I just wish I could pick and choose my favorite parts from each college and make the perfect college.

Yeah, I’ve heard FL schools are pretty generous with financial aid, but I don’t know much about them except for that. I think you’re in a really good situation though, because you have a reliable back-up plan.

Yeah they are, that’s the good thing about Florida other than that its just okay… its going to be 85 degrees tomorrow and its the middle of December, one thing I hate about Florida. I want the snowy winter Christmas feel.
Although I’ve applied to 5 schools is it crazy I want to apply for more? lol

It might just be because I’ve grown up in southern California and I’ve been spoiled by mild weather year-round, but honestly weather has never been that important to me. I know some of my classmates are making “no-snow” one of their requirements for colleges, though.

If I don’t get into Columbia, but I do get into University of Chicago, I’d be hard-pressed to find motivation to apply anywhere else… So, I might think you’re crazy because you already have an acceptance in your belt, but I guess since it’s not really one of your top schools that’s not crazy.

Yeah, I guess growing up in Mountains and snow, and moving to 85 degree weather in the winter is just something hard to adjust to, I wore shorts and a tank top today and was still hot, I just find it not right…

And I have heard good things about Chicago, I am just so indecisive when it comes to big decisions I have no other school I’d die to get into besides Columbia.
