Official FLVS AP Thread

Has anyone taken AP Psych on FLVS yet?

Can someone please tell me about his/her experience in the FLVS AP Environmental Science course? Because I read that it is ridiculously hard and that the assignments are extremely annoying. Is this true? Or has the course changed?

@moose97 i never took environmental science but i have taken marine science on flvs … and i can assure u if environmental science is anything like marine science (which i heard there similar) the assignments are very VERY annoying … ive taken some very very very VERY annoying classes but marine science tops the list of most annoying class

Not to be completely on the down side lol … the good side is … umm its easy to get an A ^__^

So can anyone tell me about their experiences in AP psychology, or AP english?

Is it worth it to take an AP class if you know the AP exam falls at the same time as another one of your at school AP classes?

@AceofSpadess you can just take one of the AP exams late if there’s a conflict

Bump!~

Although this may not exactly be relevant to AP Classes, I feel like this is something every student not yet a junior should know.

If you really, REALLY, dislike history, or history isn’t exactly your thing, I suggest you take American History Honors online.

I did, and it gave me room in my schedule for science classes my Junior year.

I very much slacked off during the first semester, and didn’t finish after until about a year in the course (which was around August 6). However, I was given a deadline, August 15, before I would have to take the EoC Exam.

So with 9 days left and 0.00% of Semester two done, what did I do?

I breezed through the class in about five days, 4-6 hours each day (this was during the summer).

The material is fairly easy in my opinion, but what killed me the most was the assignments.
Not the amount of assignments (roughly less than 40 each semester, with about 10 quizzes and 4 DBAs), but the length of the assignments. Almost all of the non-quiz assignments required that you write an essay of at least five paragraphs, while some needed maybe two or three. If you have Mrs. Stone, she is a really easy grader that may just skim through your assignments and give you an easy 100.

Overall, I ended the class with a 99%.

So if you want to take a class online, and want to free up room in your schedule for an AP, take this class.

^ can you go into depth on Spanish 3 Honors? I plan on taking it this next summer and
I think the AP Stats problem is your teacher moreso than the class.
and you can really blame him/her because u used wrong info when all the quiz info should be in the lesson BUT he/she SHOULD BE HELPING YOU WHEN YOU NEED IT
^ All of the info in the lesson isn’t word for word in the assignments. It should be figured out from critical thinking though, which I have a bit of trouble with haha. And yeah, I’m not that great at stats, getting better though. The thing is that sometimes my teacher doesn’t answer my questions, or if my question is answered, it takes a long time for my teacher to respond. Now I just google concepts I have trouble with and it works decently for me.

For Spanish III honors, I went into the class not knowing much Spanish, and so I had a little trouble at first. I personally like it though. In my first semester, I have 87 assignments. There’s a lot of vocabulary and culture you’ll need to memorize and there are some assignments that will take a long time to complete. It’s pretty comprehensive. The good thing about it though is that it reviews a lot of grammar from Spanish I and II and some of the vocab as well, and so you won’t be completely lost if you missed something in previous Spanish classes. And if you need help, you can always ask the teacher. Not sure how many Spanish III Honors teachers there are, but mine is very helpful.

the Stats teacher should be responding to you promptly. You can always go through the specific principal if you aren’t getting help/attention. That is what a friend did and it seemed to help.
Regarding the Ap Comp Sci- did you take the FLVS Computer Programming 1 class with Python and Java first? Who is your teacher for AP CS? What do you think of the assignments? Are they manageable even with a full “brick and mortar school” course load? My kid is in the CP1 right now and loves it. She was issued the Scribbler robot and is learning alot. She is thinking about taking the AP CS in her junior year but will have a packed schedule as well. Thoughts??
^ No, I didn’t. APCS is the first class I’ve ever taken in regards to technology/computer science. I’ve had no prior background knowledge. My teacher is Dawn Evans.

I LOVE APCS. I’m no tech whiz, but the assignments are really fun and applicable to real-life situations. And it depends on what your definition of a “brick and mortar school” is. I’m a junior at the moment. I participate in ECs and I usually don’t get home until around 7PM, and then I have work to do for my two online APs, my online honors class, and then homework for the two APs I’m currently taking at school. At first, it was really overwhelming and I fell behind in my classes frequently, but now it’s getting better. After awhile, the concepts seem self-explanatory and as you get into the course, you start to feel more comfortable with completing assignments. One of the first assignments I did (I think it was an assignment for module 2) took me 10 hours to complete, but now I’m only spending around 30 minutes coding each program/assignment. I guess it all really depends on the person. If your daughter enjoys CS then I’d definitely encourage her to take the class, even if it takes a little extra time to get used to in the beginning.

Thanks for the input Gomdorri! My kid has Mr. Jordan and she likes it but has to write a full “post mortem” report after each programming exercise. She is excited that she is learning both Python ( 1st semester) and Java and feels it will pave the way to the APCS. They indicated the first 60% or so of the assignments would be almost like a review for her so she chose to take the CP1 first. The reason I am a bit concerned is because she has a heavy schedule planned for Junior year so if the APCS is “easier” that would help. Our schools pass rate is an abysmal 23% so hopfeully FLVS will be a better experience.

No problem. (:

Again, it all depends on what you consider a “heavy” schedule. APCS is, in a way, ‘easier’ (and less time consuming as far as I know. Segment one of APCS only has 56 assignments whereas my Spanish and stats classes have 80+ for each semester and it’s really difficult to keep up). I currently have a 100% in APCS.

If it helps, I could show you the schedule I have. Of course your daughter and I aren’t completely the same, but it might give you a general idea on the dedication required to complete the class.

School is from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM M-F, and my class schedule consists of band, AP English language, APUSH, and an elective. I have two free periods during the school day, and during that time I do work for APCS, AP Stats, and Spanish III Honors (I don’t get much done during that time though). Usually, I have varsity practice right after school until around 7:00PM-so I get home around 7:30- but once or twice a week I have choir practice in the afternoon so I have to stay until 5:00PM, go to practice, and then my practice ends later than usual, and once in awhile there are prom committee meetings that I have to dedicate my time to as well. I also have a part-time job that I work every Monday and Saturday, and on Mondays, I go immediately to work from school and then work until around 11PM. On Mondays, I usually don’t do much online coursework because I use the time I have to catch up on sleep. On Saturdays, I volunteer in the morning from 8:30 to 11:30, then go to work. Sometimes I work the lunch shift, but if they need me, I end up working the whole day.

On average, I think each CS assignment takes me around 45 minutes to an hour and a half to complete, and I also have around 4 hours each night of other homework (although sometimes I finish in less than 4 hours) to finish. Sometimes I get all of my work done, and sometimes I don’t. That’s the great thing about FLVS though. Since there aren’t any set deadlines, I have the opportunity to slack off for a little bit.

At one point, I DID fall behind in APCS, but after that I spent a my weekend free time catching up and finally I got ahead in my coursework. Lately, I haven’t really stressed out much over assignments, and I think deciding to take APCS was totally worth it.

Good luck to your daughter!

Wow! You sound like an amazing student. Kudos for being so organized as well as involved in your community. In her junior year, my kid will have APUSH, AP Chem, Physics 1 honors, AP Lang and Comp, Latin 3 AICE, Gifted Research studies, AP Calc AB, and will be on Varsity swim with practice until 5 ish. She is also on academic team, junior classical league, Cyber Patriots and she wants to continue on robotics but I think that will be too demanding during the build season. In the spring she will be on varsity track. She won’t have her driver’s license until next year ( just turned 15) so no real job. Her community service has been with the gifted research class, coaching the middle school track and academic teams and helping with various church and school functions as well as peer tutoring in math. She really doesn’t have time for a job at this point, IMHO. She isn’t as organized as you seem to be and I catch her procrastinating quite a bit when she is on her FLVS English 2 honors class. When she is on her CP1 class she seems fully engaged  Thanks again for the specific info about the AP class and good luck on the exams!

Ooh, good luck to your daughter with her classes. Her schedule seems more time consuming than mine, and those classes are pretty tough from what I’ve seen. I was going to take AP Calc BC this year, but couldn’t due to schedule incompatibilities. I’m glad though, because my friends have 2 hours of homework each night just from calc. I would have never been able to get any sleep at night if I took an AP calc or science class. It’s great that your daughter is so involved in her community! I’m amazed that she finds the time to do all of that. And robotics sounds really fun. I’ve always wanted to join robotics, but there aren’t any clubs in my area (as far as I know at least).

Ah, not being able to drive is a pain. I’m 15 as well and I’m having difficulty keeping commitments to my ECs because my parents work 24/7 and often don’t have the time to give me a ride.

I can see where she’s coming from haha. I’m the quintessence of procrastination. Even today, I decided to nap for four hours during the time I was supposed to use for my online coursework. It’s tempting, and I often succumb to temptation.

And thanks!

How flvs grade forgiveness works on AP env? Last year , my D took only 1st segment of AP env which she could not complete. But they made her to take AP env where she got 4. After AP result flvs issued F AP env. So she took AP env 1st segment again and completed. But flvs wont remove F until May (She need to take AP env again)!

We are applying to college this ‘F’ hurts her GPA (GPA 3.93 reduce to 3.78 because this ‘F’)

How can we fix this issue? any other options remove ‘F’ ?

I’ve taken HOPE on flvs and it was a very time consuming due to alot of projects, and exercise track you need to have. This could take you at least 18 weeks maybe depending on how motivated you are so why not try it before the grace period ends, if you don’t like it you could drop out. Hope this helps.

IceQube - What are the classes you did in 5-6 weeks?

Do you think it is capable to take a ap class in one semester like ap human geo and ap psych? I would really like for someome to give a least one review on ap psych kind of want to know what the class is like.

I’d love an update on ap human geo and ap psych as well.

Are you kidding me??? I just read this entire thread looking for an AP Psych review and I found nothing :(.
I will post my own experiences on FLVS APCS:
Teacher: Mrs. Ross
I started over the summer and almost finished segment 1, then I procrastinated and didn’t finish it till November. Segment 2 I’m currently on Module 14.

Review:
-Extremely informative- Every lesson teaches you something new. Sometimes the labs and reading through the eImacs is a pain, but you will definitely learn something from this course. I went from having absolutely no prior knowledge to learning java.

 • Interesting- while this class is pretty easy and the premise behind the course is cheesy (you work for some company and every module you meet a new instructor who happens to be specialized for whatever topic you are learning about)
 • Assignments are the programs you create, and they have recently gotten rid of the fluff ones (except the collaborative 12.07 “Mystery Message”). There isn’t a lot of essay type writing except the Post Mortem Reviews you write when you submit something (but they take like 2 minutes).
 • Tip- if you have Microsoft Home and Student I have a OneNote notebook for all my FLVS classes. I simply take a screenshot of all the information and organize it by assignment or whatever so it is very easy to look up information you may have forgotten.

Overall I like AP Computer Science and it is a pretty easy A. Every module consists of assignments for most lessons, a challenge program at the end of the module, and occasionally a test (which cannot be retaken). There are 20 modules (10 in each semester).

Please someone post an AP Psych on FLVS review.

What is FLVS AP rules? My D took only semester of flvs environmental science? My D didn’t want to take AP exam.

But FLVS says she should take AP exam. I don’t fin this rule anywhere. Some one can help me?
