If I recall correctly, the acceptance rate for the deferred group is about 13%. If that is correct, it will be extremely competitive…

Accepted!
Mechanical engineering, OOS Female

Objective:
ACT: 34 (E:35 M:34 R:34 S:33 W:8) [superscored. This is in two sittings, both 33 single]

Weighted GPA (out of 5.0): I believe it was a 4.4 when I submitted

Senior Year Course Load: 4 APs, 1 Honors, 2 non-core
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None really…

Volunteer/Community service:
Volunteer at local hospital (~100 hours)
Volunteer with Violin Studio (like nursing homes, local events, etc)
Summer Activities: State music program, Girls State representative, Internship at university engineering program
Personal Statement: It’s really a hit or miss essay. Guess it was a hit with them.
Supplement: Thought it was pretty good. Added parts about research programs and Co-ops. Word limit was tough.
Teacher Recommendation: I’m not sure if I submitted one… was it required?
Counselor Rec: Did not read.

Other

School Type: Public (pretty competitive)

Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I talked about fried chicken in my common app personal statement… ?

Reflection
Strengths: Possibly GPA/ACT. Internship with engineering program as a female.
Weaknesses: (being Asian?) I didn’t send a lot of my test scores; had some grade slips (but I’ve shown “improvement” since then)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not sure… By the end of graduation I’ll have 15 APs, 11 Honors, and 1 Dual credit. Maybe they really like fried chicken?

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred to Brown

General Comments:
Wow when I applied I thought I had a good shot but writing down my stats makes me feel like a total crapshoot. You never know what’s going to happen. NEVER bring yourself down because of someone else’s decision. Use it as an excuse to buy copious amounts of ice cream. Nothing else.

Congrats to the Accepted and happy ice cream days to all the others :)

@huffmuffin - I think most likely reason you were deferred is that they only had 2 years of schooling to go on. Now that first semester of your dual enrollment is over you need to submit those grades. That will give them a better idea of how you handle college level work.
Although your SAT is lower than the average the fact you have all A’s in those college classes should help a lot. I think you have a chance. Just make sure you have a back up just in case .GL.

@poopiez - I don’t know if the orientation dates been posted or not but they aren’t until July. Plus you can’t register for orientation for quite a while.

I was accepted into GT, and I also applied EA to UNC. Does anyone think that this acceptance should give me some hope for being accepted to UNC being OOS?

@14 Penn
I applied ea to unc as well. OOS is very very tough. Without a hook (URM,recruited athlete, legacy), you will likely need ivy level stats. We will find out soon enough. Check your mycarolina page on jan 24.
