Very simple to change. Don’t worry about it.

lolikid- Tech is in a nice area of Atlanta called “Midtown.” We have visited twice and walked around everywhere and never did not feel safe. Tech like other campuses takes safety seriously and has different systems in place to protect students like blue lights and escorts. We asked students about crime and they reported it was not a problem.

For entering freshmen there are not a “ton” of scholarships for OOS. We met with the Dean of Women and were told that starting sophomore year scholarships start increasing because they get more from industry to give. Ways of making Tech affordable are study-abroad (they only charge in-state tuition when you are abroad) co-ops (you earn money to help pay for tuition) and having companies pay for your tuition during your senior year as part of your work agreement. We have talked to Tech alumni and many told us that their senior year was paid for my the company that they had done co-op with.

If you have questions then I recommend a trip to campus. We live in California and had certain pre-set notions of Atlanta and campus. It was nothing like what we expected. Atlanta is a very cosmopolitan city (we hardly heard a southern accent while on campus); the campus was beautiful and the surrounding area was lively with students in restaurants and walking around. In fact the chef that won “Top Chef” has a restaurant just a block from campus. There are nice hotels for staying near campus.

Deferred from Early Action. Any advice?

Essays were okay, but probably not great
Mom went to Tech

make sure to show that you are really interested in Georgia Tech. I had friends with almost perfect ACT scores who didnt get in because they didnt spend a lot of time on there application and essay.

@lolikid - DS is a freshman lives in the dorms. DH works at a company across the street from GT. We would not have had DS go there if we had felt the campus wasn’t safe. Atlanta is a city so you do need to use common sense. Like don’t wander around by yourself at night …
They have a large number of police and other measures that keeps the crime low on campus. I would not reject tech because of the crime in Atlanta.

Does anyone know when we’ll get financial aid information??

I think I got deferred because of my SAT scores. I took it once without preparation or study junior year and got an 1880, and that was the only score sent to tech. I just took it again in December (stupid me didn’t study or prep or anything because I thought with my ec’s and ACT I would get in) and got a 1960. I didn’t think about Tech’s switch to Common App creating such a surge in applications:/. Plus I kinda just put something down for the supplement, I should have taken more time with it. I’m somewhat weak on math credits, and no AP math classes.

GA Tech doesn’t have my most recent test score, or my AP Exam scores (something that they said is optional and factor in). They also don’t know about being named to the All Region team, and I’m planning on sending both to Tech, but what else can/should I do to get accepted with the regular decision? I could mention that I’m self taught on playing the guitar and piano (shows initiative, passion, etc) but after all the EC’s I have I doubt that would make a difference.

I think only the “big” merit scholarship initial info comes out on the 8th.

@theonewhoknocks. - besides the AP and SAT scores make sure and send in your senior year first semester transcript. Good luck.

Industrial engineering, OOS

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): N/A
ACT: 34 (E:35 M:33 R:32 S:35 W:10) so for how GATech does it it’s still a 34

Essays:I liked them for the most part.
Common app: showed growth while not being super cliche
Supplement: I’m a verbose person so getting it down to 150 words was difficult enough. It was cutesy enough but I felt I missed highlighting a lot
Teacher Recommendation: Strong, she “accidentally” showed the checklist to me (as I was teaching her how to submit it) and it was all the like “of the best I’ve ever had” column
Counselor Rec: pretty good

Other
Intended Major: Industrial Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): NJ (so OOS)
School Type: Private (highly competitive)
Ethnicity: Mixed white and Pakistani

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, I’m boring

Reflection
Strengths: GPA? ACT? Being a female engineer? Teacher reccomendation
Weaknesses: OOS, those same “strengths”,
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not entirely sure. I’d like to think my stats were strong but many just as strong/stronger were deferred.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted: Rutgers, Deferred: Princeton

General Comments: Congrats to everyone else accepted!
BUT
To those deferred/rejected: I just want you to know how much I want to give each and every one of you a hug. I know exactly how a deferral feels and it sucks. But, everyone here is unbelievably bright and you will all get in somewhere amazing. Keep on fighting :)

@itsv thanks for the info:) i’m a californian too, so i think it would be really helpful to visit

Additional Information- I am doing early graduation and the Dual Enrollment Honors Program. Took 2 AP classes sophomore year (4 and 5 on the tests) and my juniior year (technically my senior ear since its my last year) I have taken 16 credit hours so far and have another 12 planned, with all As.
I felt like my essay was above average.
Anyone have any idea as to what part of my application was too weak?

I think 700 for Math and a total of 2040 may be comparatively low for this year’s pool.

Do you think I have any chance?

This is a guess, but I would suspect that early graduation is hurting you. Many qualified students could graduate their jr yr. There are no brownie pts for early graduation.

So, while you have 2 APs and a yr’s worth of dual enrollment (with low enrollment since you are barely meeting full-time enrollment with 12 hrs), there are other students who have far more. For advanced students, it is not unusual to have multiple 200-300 level university courses. Consider what your application would have looked like this time next yr. would it have made you stand out even more?

I don’t know if GT has a stated policy, but many of the competitive schools strongly advise against early graduation precisely bc of the above.

Based on the averages they released yesterday, (2,193 for SAT and 9+ APs), it seems that your stats are not close. As a matter of fact, many people with 2,200 SAT also got deferred.

@Mom2agrtds Well, if I had not done the dual enrollment program and just stayed in highschool for Junior and Senior year, I would have had a maximum of about 11 AP classes. By doing dual enrollment, I will have 2 AP and 10 college courses, and as far as I can tell, GA tech looks at college courses and AP about equally, so I’m really not behind in that regard. I guess I could have stayed another year in Dual Enrollment and done more, but since tons of people accepted do not do dual enrollment, I doubt that it would be neccessary. The amount of advanced courses falls in the criteria of the average people admitted in early action (9+)
@rocky789 Yeah, I’m guessing that is it. Do you think the test score average for regular admission will be low enough that I will meet it, or should I just kind of accept that this is most likely the end of the road?

does anyone know when orientation dates will be posted or are they already out

10 college courses with 28 credit hrs? (Obviously no upper level science courses with labs.) Then, I would guess it has to do with the actual coursework. Are they all 100 level type classes? Are the courses beyond high school level equivalencies? For example, as a math major will you have completed cal1-3 and diffEQ or linear alg by the end of the yr?

Fwiw, I don’t think it is simply your test scores. 1485 is the avg. 1400 is not that far off the avg. Obviously in order for 1485 to be the avg, many students had to have scores in a range below that. Did you submit any subject test scores, preferably the math 2?
