Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2018 applicants thread

^^ I think that’s for borderline candidates only, or where they needed more info. I don’t think they contacted mine, but then again I’m not completely sure they would tell me if they were contacted. Are they told not to inform the student? I feel like I should ask them, but I’m not sure how they would react.

Applying: Brown, Yale, Princeton (applied), Duke, Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt (applied), WUSTL (applied), USC (applied), Northeastern (applied), Boston College, GWU, UMass Amherst (applied)

I am applying to Princeton, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Columbia, UPenn, Cornell, Duke, Stanford, and Case Western Reserve, but my heart is really with Harvard. I’ve finished all of the apps, however.

Do we get our decision right away in the email, or are we redirected to a portal or something that we have to log on to and THEN get our decision?

^ We get our decisions in the e-mail they send us. O_O

^Are you sure? CalTech’s email redirected my friend to his portal, but I’m sure it’s just different at Harvard. Is it in the subject line, an attachment, or what?

@ckfy

I highly doubt it’d be in the subject line or sent as an attachment- I assume they’d present it in a way that the applicant would have to actually “read” the email to see their decision…

They send out the decision in an email (or at least have in past years). Unlike many other schools, the decisions do not come out in a portal. The admission decision is not stated in the subject line of the email. In other words, you do at least have to read the email – or the first few lines of it – to be able to know your decision.

This is the exact wording of the RD acceptance email sent out for the past few years.
http://rowingrecruiting.com/_images/harvard.jpg</a></p>

^ Okay, so basically, if I don’t see “I” or “C” as the first letter, I’ll delete the e-mail.

OMG just wait 5 days and see for yourself :D

Sample acceptance/rejection RD emails:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/484432-acceptance-rejection-letter.html</a></p>

Sample deferral email:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/13607692-post.html</a></p>

Ugh, thinking about the next five days makes me wonder how I’m going to be able to pay attention in class at ALL.
Time to start meditating ~~

Hey guys, I know this is really last minute panicking, but I just noticed that the portal only shows they’ve received my SAT scores, not my AP scores. (I’m especially freaked out because I forgot to self-report my AP scores, although I did send them out via Collegeboard). There’s nothing I can do it about it now, but it would be so comforting to know it’s like that on your guys’ status portals too!

I didn’t even send ap scores. Don’t we only do that for colleges that we plan to attend so we can get credit? Or maybe I’m just misinformed and if so ahahaha screw my apps

The only time you need to send in AP scores is when you’re accepted to the college and you want credit. Self-reporting AP scores is perfectly fine, as most top schools like Harvard care WAY more about the grade you received in the class than the score you got on the exam.

“If you have significant new information for your admissions file, including recent grades, test results, activities, or other achievements, please send them directly to fileroom@fas.harvard.edu using the subject line “Additions to Applications” by January 20, 2012. Extra letters of recommendation are welcome, but only if they might contribute substantially to your application.”

Lol…this is pretty much what they told me…

Also, I know realize that I’ll have to read past the first letter to know if I was accepted or rejected. But if I see “The” I’ll know I was deferred.

Wow! Now you know how to tell if you were rejected or admitted or deferred. :D

Yeah, that’s weird! Hopefully you get accepted though!

This was the acceptance email I received for early action last year. Congratulations is the first word.

Dear Mr. -----------,

Congratulations! I am delighted to inform you that the Committee on Admissions has admitted you to the Class of 2017 under the Early Action program.

I hope you will decide to join us at Harvard. We encourage you to get to know Harvard and the transformational opportunities that await you here.

Our faculty and students extend a special invitation for you to come to Cambridge during VISITAS from Saturday, April 20 to Monday, April 22. At this weekend-long celebration for all admitted students, you will meet current undergraduates, faculty, and other members of the Class of 2017. Of course, we would also be happy to have you visit at some other time and we hope you will make a special effort to do so if you cannot join us in April.

Especially if you cannot come to Cambridge during the next several months, we hope you will contact us if we can help in any way. You will find our website and the Admitted Students? site to be good sources of information about college life. In early April we will send you another small packet of information, including your Harvard University Identification number (HUID), updated financial aid awards, and additional forms such as the Final School Report.

While you have until May 1, 2013 to respond it would be helpful to hear from you as soon as you have made your decision. Please respond online to our offer of Admission.

In recent years, nearly thirty-five thousand students have applied for the sixteen hundred and fifty places in the freshman class. Faced with many talented and highly qualified candidates, the Admissions Committee takes care to choose individuals who present extraordinary academic, extracurricular and personal strengths. In making each admission decision, the Committee keeps in mind that the excellence of Harvard College depends on the talent of the people assembled here. In voting to offer you admission, the Committee believes that you have the potential to make important contributions during your college years and beyond.

You will soon receive a packet of information about the many academic and extracurricular opportunities that will be available to you as a member of the Class of 2017. We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
