Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2018 applicants thread

When do we hear about FA

^Don’t remember, but it says under Financial Aid on the admitted students site

I don’t know I was wondering the same thing

My son is in. We are very happy for him. He has close to perfect score in SAT, almost all perfect scores to more than 5 subject SATs’, completed more than 10 APs’ with 5, multiple national competition awards, leader in activities. But we know there many many students in the past were deferred, and some were admitted in regular admission later. We are Asian immigrants, with no political cloud and backing, and are fully aware of the “Asian Ceiling” in college admission. I can rarely write any English without grammatical error, but we have to deal with the reality. So, for those who are deferred, you still have good chance. And, work hard on other applications. You have no time to waste. I believe if you even dare to apply to Harvard SCEA, you sure will get into one of many top schools. Good luck.

Then says,

Guess the adcoms missed one

I’m not nice to people who discourage everyone because of their tests scores so yeah, IN THEIR FACE and also yours.

Harvard admits more people than actually go, but who gets in to Harvard and doesn’t go?

Last year Harvard had an overall yield rate of 82%, so some SCEA admitted students end up going to other competitive schools that they were admitted to in the RD round; schools such as Stanford, Yale, and Princeton. After all the cards have been dealt, some students make a gut decision after attending various Spring invited student weekends.

I never considered getting accepted long enough to realize what would happen if I did, now I am confused lol.

Here is what the admitted students site says.

If you applied (or intend to apply) for aid and were admitted during Early Action, you will receive detailed information from our office in your admissions packet. Full applications for Financial Aid are due beginning February 1st, 2014.

^^ Next week, you will receive a “thick envelope” from Harvard Admissions with detailed information about what is needed to complete your application for financial aid. If you are still confused after reading the information, call the Harvard Financial Aid office and they will clarify.

In the meantime, go to the Harvard Financial website and run their Net Price Calculator to see if your family would qualify for financial aid:https://college.harvard.edu/financial-aid/net-price-calculator

After all the years of hard work, blood and sweat - deferred - very disappointed and bitter, especially looking at the other stats. Sure, i am going to get the “It’s holistic review” answer but it does feel like there is a huge element of luck. Luck in the sense that university wants to build a certain ethnic and socioeconomic profile which i don’t fit in and hence missed out.
Having a hard time trying to pickup since the news yesterday.
Those who are curious - SAT - 2350 , SATII 800 in 4 subjects, GPA 4.0 ( UW is 5.7) , class rank 10/607, very competitive school, 5 on 6 APs, All-State Orchestra all 4 years, 1st chair Region orchestra 2 years, excellent EC with national level recognition and awards for service, very good essays, probably good LORs too. What to do I am Asian .
very upset and bitter

^^ For many student’s the college application process is really the first time they have ever experienced real disappointment. But, you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move forward.

You’re correct, the process involves a bit of luck. This article was written several years ago, but it may help to ease the pain and understand what happened: [J.D.
ligure: I got accepted to Harvard, but if I get accepted to Wellesley, I may not go to Harvard. They’re both incredible schools with intelligent people and amazing career opportunities; I love them both equally, for the prestige and the vibe :)

Hey guys. Sorry I never posted yesterday. The disappointment was a bit too much and especially after I looked at all the people getting accepted on here…I just needed a break from CC. So yeah I got deferred, my stats are up on the Decisions thread if anyone wants to look. Congrats to those accepted. Now i just have to figure out what in God’s name I can do to help out my deferred application.

After a day of sheer lamentations and reflections, I came to realize that I DO have a second chance, despite its difficulty. As a devout Christian, I truly believe that God has planned a future for me, maybe not at Harvard, but somewhere as equally good or better. This by no means is to proselytize anyone, but my advice to others in the same situation that you too, have a second chance at reaffirming yourself to Harvard adcom.

Congratulations to those accepted from the bottom of my heart. For those deferred, I wish you the best in your future endeavors!

Deferred as well, but I don’t want to post stats in the other thread. I never found them helpful as I think it’s not what you do but how you take advantage of what is offered. My miniscule Midwest HS has no AP classes, honors, or even debate or oral interp, yet a few dedicated classmates and I took initiative and took online AP courses through the state. I feel blessed to even be deferred and given a second chance, so congrats to the admitted and good luck to the deferred!

congrats to all y’all!

You all deserve it!

Is there a thread for RD? Does anyone know?

Haha I sense tensions are running high… I got deferred, but it’s probably a good thing. Clearly everyone was more than worthy of what they wanted, and Harvard handpicked whichever students they wanted. It’s more of a motivation to finish other apps now anyways. I agree with @WeIsCool, you do the best you can with what you’re given and hope that others can appreciate that. Congratulations to the accepted, may you take full advantage of the new opportunities granted to you. Good luck to the deferred, this boat is overflowing but it’s full of fantastic people.

Sorry to bore you with my speech :D
