Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

@ninopedia I think that’s a good answer… The more I think about my interview, the worse I feel about it hahaha

@PcollegegirlPI think you did well answering that I would not have thought of that lol

@PcollegegirlP right why not :smiley: I believe philosophy major ranks 2nd and 3rd in Lsat and Mcat scores and has higher rates of getting admitted into professional school than Pre-law or Med majors B-) I want to do graduate school, for now I’m interested in Aesthetics but there’s a lot more to explore so we’ll see how it goes lol

@fairyfantasy that’s great! But I remember Harvard doesn’t offer double major :-/ they just have something called joint concentration… :-S

Anyone knows the first word after the “Dear…” in the deferral letter? – something for me to expect lol I don’t want to have only the word “Congratulations” in my imagination…

@mimosa26‌ maybe something like " Dear… We have completed our early review of your application and have decided to hold it for further consideration in February. Please do not feel too discouraged by this." (Souce : MIT 2005 Deferral Letter)… We should brace ourselves because last year in the early action round, 3,197 were deferred, 992 were accepted and 366 were denied admission !

@mimosa26‌ that’s great! Yes indeed, they say that students who major in philosophy score really well both on the LSAT and Mcat!
Sounds interesting, wish you all the best… And who knows maybe MAYBE we might be sitting together in a philosophy class and MAYBE not… Let’s hope for the best :-SS
@aranshghs‌ thnx… Idk how I came up with that in the nick of time :wink:
GUYS, AM I THE ONLY ONE ???
I do NOT want to get deferred that will just kill me every single day till march! I just want a yes or no( to be honest a YES LOL) do u think the same way? (I hope what I wrote makes sense)

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU!!!
Here is a DEFERRAL LETTER:
"The Committee on Admissions has just completed its Early Action meetings
during which your application for admission was reviewed. After very
careful consideration, we were unable to take a definite action on your
candidacy at this time and therefore have deferred our decision until the
regular spring meetings.

Please be assured that your entire application will be considered again
thoroughly. While it is impossible to predict individual admission
decisions, in recent years students whose applications were deferred have
been admitted at various rates, at times close to those for Regular Action
candidates. We will communicate the Committee’s decision to you in April.

We hope you will write to us if you have new information to add to your
application materials. Recent grades or test results, activities, honors,
or other accomplishments would be of interest to the Committee as it
reviews your application again in the spring meetings.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. You have our best
wishes for a rewarding and productive year."

Here is a REJECTION LETTER:

I am very sorry to inform you that it is not possible to offer you admission to the Class of 2012. I wish I were writing to report a different decision, but the competition was so rigorous this year that there were many outstanding young men and women to whom we could not offer places in the class.

Over twenty-seven thousand students, a record number, applied to the entering class. The great majority of the applicants could certainly have been successful here academically, and most candidates presented strong personal and extracurricular credentials as well. The Committee was, therefore, faced with the necessity of choosing a class from a great many more talented and highly qualified students than it had room to admit.

We wish it were possible for us to admit more of our fine applicants, and we understand how difficult the college application process can be for students and their families. While the Committee conducted its deliberations with the utmost care, we know that no one can predict with certainty what an individual will accomplish during college or beyond. Past experience suggests that the particular college a student attends is far less important than what the student does to develop his or her strengths and talents over the next four years.

We very much appreciate the interest you have shown in Harvard College. We hope that you will accept the best wishes of the Committee for success in all your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

William R. Fitzsimmons
Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

And lastly here is a ACCEPTANCE LETTER:

I am delighted to inform you that the Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid has voted to offer you a place in the Harvard Class of 2012. Following an old Harvard tradition, a certificate of admission is enclosed. Please accept my personal congratulations for your outstanding achievements.

This year over twenty-seven thousand students, a record number, applied for admission to the entering class. Faced with many more talented and highly qualified candidates than it had room to admit, the Admissions Committee took great care to choose individuals with exceptional character as well as unusual academic and extracurricular strengths. The Committee is convinced that you will make important contributions during your college years and beyond.

Our faculty and students extend a special invitation for you to visit Cambridge over the next few weeks. If you feel a visit would be helpful in making your final college choice, we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. An invitation is enclosed.

We need to know by May 1 whether or not you plan to accept our offer of admission. You may fill out and return the enclosed postcard or you may respond online at https://admapp.admissions.fas.harvard.edu/hanevo/accepted-haNevoLanding.do</a>. If you accept admission for this coming September, further information will be sent to you over the summer by the Freshman Dean’s Office.

Each year some admitted students choose to defer entrance for a year and find their many and varied experiences extremely rewarding. If you would like to defer, please tell us about your alternative plans. More information about deferring admission can be found at Harvard College Admissions Office: Prospective Students.

Among the enclosed materials you will find a final School Report Form, which must be completed by your school counselor and returned to us at the end of this academic year. The Committee on Admissions reserves the right to withdraw its offer of admission under certain conditions described on the postcard enclosed for your response.

We have a longstanding commitment to meet the financial needs of our admitted students. No limit has been set on the financial resources devoted to making the College fully accessible to all students of promise, and we have a firm policy of making supportive offers of need-based financial aid. We encourage you to contact us now or at any time during your years here if you have questions or concerns about financial aid or if you have additional information that might be helpful to us in understanding your family’s financial circumstances.

I very much hope that you will decide to join us at Harvard. We have enclosed a statement about Harvard’s opportunities which might be helpful to you in making your college choice. Whatever your decision may be, you have my best wishes for every future success.

Sincerely,

William R. Fitzsimmons

Hey guys! Anyone know when international candidates in countries with limited interviews are likely to get interviews? Has anyone gotten an international interview as yet?

@aranshghs‌ I got a similar question! My interviewer asked me, “Do you think you are the best candidate?” I was so stunned, it took me a while to answer… looool

@Kashallover‌ I got my request last Friday and had my interview today (I’m an international candidate). I’m not sure when the last time an interview can be requested is, but should be before Thanksgiving.

@Melissawilliams‌ I changed the settings on my phone so it doesn’t show any preview, only the subject :stuck_out_tongue: I don’t want to know until I open it hahaha

@AcollegeC‌ Hey! I’m also an international applicant from southern China but I haven’t been contacted for an interview yet. Which region are you from? Also, did you get to meet your interviewer in person or was it through Skype?

@Ninopedia‌ I’m from southeast Asia! I met her in person. She told me the deadline for her to submit the report was this week, so you should get a request this week maybe? It might just be her deadline though, because I’ve read elsewhere that people get interviews even in December. Not sure though!

@Karabekian‌ Of course! I haven’t received any reply back, yet, but I’ll let you guys know when it comes.

@mimosa26‌ Wow, I didn’t know about that. Thanks for telling me, though. I’ve only looked up the CS deparment since that’s my main and likely career path. Guess I’ll need to research more before my interview…if I do get one, that’s it.

And honestly, I think I will most likely get deferred early round and rejected regular round, haha. I see so many flaws in my application half a month later.

So on the bright side, an acceptance will mean that I’m like euphoric for the rest of the year…a rejection might really mess with my head going into my midterms lol

@Kashallover

I had an international interview today.

Phew, guys, it’s less than a month till decision time!

This is what Harvard replied back after I emailed them about the (lack of) interview:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us.

We make an effort to interview as many applicants as possible. All applicants to whom we are able to offer interviews will be contacted directly by a Harvard representative; you need not do anything to initiate this process.

Please note that the absence of an interview will have no negative impact on the evaluation of your application.

Sincerely,

Records Room Staff
Harvard College Admissions

@PcollegegirlP‌ THANK YOU!!!

does anyone know if applicants get separated by region as in address or as country of citizenship?

@harvard00‌

As far as I know, preliminary readers are assigned ‘regions’-- this means ‘countries’ when dealing with international students and ‘areas within the US’ when dealing with US kids.

The same committee handles all applicants.

@Bemusedfyz‌ thanks!

@soccerlover17 yeah my counselor told me to submit all of my RD apps by the 5th.
That way, if Harvard’s a rejection, I can just study for my exams and chill over the holiday. just like any other year of high school. Everything will be out of my hands.

@oxoxhawja3xoxo‌ but if you’re accepted it’s a bunch of cash you’ll never get back.
