@ CheeSee: I’m not too sure which route would be better. Technically the community college way would be easier since cc transfers are first priority. Level of priority for transfers is CC > UC-to-UC > CSU-to-UC > Out-of-state. So if you stay at CSUF you will be pretty low priority if you want to transfer to the UC system and not to mention some CSU classes do not transfer to the UC system.

I have no idea if the honors system gives you priority registration. I believe the number of units you have is what determines your registration priority. I was offered the honors thing but I saw no point in it since the only reason honors would help you is that it would qualify you for TAP. However, at the time I was offered the honors thing, I was almost done with my IGETC and you need 8 honors courses to qualify for TAP.

I don’t think it would take you longer if you went the CC route. If your classes transfer to Mt. SAC from CSUF than you just need to take what is left of your IGETC at SAC. If any of your classes from CSUF don’t transfer to Mt. SAC than they wouldn’t have transferred to the UC system anyways. Again, definitely talk to a counselor to see what your options are.

I think it’s just safer to go to SAC than transfer to UC since you will at least know all of your classes transfer.

@ 626transfer: Congrats! Yeah UCI and LA’s business is tough. My bro transferred to LA as a biz/econ major but he weaseled his way in. LOL

Hey guys, if anyone could hear me out and possibly give some input I’d really appreciate it. So I had a bad semester and actually failed a math class. I got a D, but yeah, same as failing. I screwed up, I know, you don’t have to tell me twice. All I can do now is look forward or I’ll be kicking myself down again. So my GPA for this semester is 2.5 and my cumulative GPA dropped to a 3.2. This really puts me in a tough spot. I should retake the class and get a better grade? I’m wondering how badly this will affect me being able to transfer to a UC. I’m almost done with my GE which means I can transfer right? I’ve gone to multiple transfer counselors and they’ve said nothing about just completing your GE then transferring. They’ve told me things I already knew but nothing that I should know. I found this information out from a friend who went to Mt. Sac, just finished her GE and got accepted into UCI. Granted her GPA was better than mine. Anyways I still have fall 2013 and spring 2014 semester to bring my GPA up. So do I still have a chance to fix this? What should I do? My major is biology, but I was thinking of changing as well if I ever make up my mind.
Please help if you can. Thank you.*

@ Ariati: If the math class you failed was a required class either for the IGETC or your prereqs on assist.org for bio than you must retake it. If you get stellar grades from here on out than the app reviewers will take your progress into consideration. Once you get a better grade for the math class you can petition to have it replace your D. The D will no longer affect your GPA but will still show up on your transcript.

Yes if you have your IGETC completed and your major prereqs for bio completed (depending on which universities you’re applying to) than you’re good to go.

hey guys ive been reading this thread recently and i some questions that im confused with. I just graduated high-school and im suppose to get classes through the connect 4 program but im leaving the country for 5 months and im scared that when i come back there wont be any classes since its so crowded at sac right now. Is there any suggestions on what I should do when i come back? Plus i scored really low on the math so im planning to retake the math assesment. I got placed into the math 71 what are the levels of math that i have to complete inorder to transfer? I would really need some help here !!!
I would like to transfer to UCI, which is my dream school !!!

@ tinameng: Not sure what the connect 4 program is but if you’re going to be gone for 5 months than you’re most likely going to run into some problems. I’m assuming you’ll be missing Summer and Fall so you need to go to admissions and let them know you’re situation. You’re going to have to retake your placement test before registering for the semester when you return if you don’t want to take Math 71. Most of the universities will take a college level course which is Math 100+. It goes Math 50 -> Math 51 -> Math 71 -> Math 1xx so you’re just one off from the 100’s. I took 110(statistics) for UCLA. I believe UCI requires calculus and of course it all depends on your major. If you’re an engineering major or something than you will obviously require more classes before your transfer.

Make sure you talk to admissions. As a freshmen with 0 units, you will have low priority and classes will be way hard to get, as if it wasn’t hard enough already.

@ primrose45: I’m not sure what exactly you are asking but It’s definitely getting tougher to get class at Mt. SAC(if that’s what your referring to). My brother transferred to UCLA in 2011, I transferred in 2012, and my sister is transferring to UCSD this Fall for 2013 and from what they told me and what I experienced, it is definitely getting tougher. I don’t think it really matters if you are transferring to CSU or UC because you still need to ultimately accumulate 60 units. Admissions are also getting more and more competitive each year.

You just have to be persistent when adding classes(not everyone is). I remember one semester at SAC I was actually attending two ENG 1C courses simultaneously. I did that for 2 weeks, keeping up with the homework and everything. Luckily I was eventually let into the class. Most would not do this but if you do and care enough, you are more likely to get class than others. Good luck to you!

Hi!
After reading this thread, I came across on how many students find Mt. SAC being extremely beneficial towards future transfer students in CSU/UC’s. I’m a first time freshman soon to registrar w/ Mt. SAC, I was set on applying to Cal Poly Pomona this year but my disability program record from my two first years in high school prevented me to. I took a plethora of an amount of courses on the side, grew my way out of the program, and did everything (+activities) to keep a high GPA & social stance. I have encountered many positive helping hands from Mt. SAC but wonder, based on my degree (majoring in Arch), will my years in Mt. SAC serve me for the better once I reach my transfer time? Assuming I have a good 3.5 or better GPA and an excellent portfolio background to support me.
Any advice would really help!

@ Yezbel: Whether Mt. SAC will prepare you for transfer depends on yourself. I had a 3.5 at Mt. SAC but my first quarter at UCLA I got a 2.3. lol. The whole transition to the quarter system and the heavy workload hit me pretty hard. It’s been a whole year now and I’m slowly pulling my GPA back up. When you say “Arch” I’m assuming you mean architecture? Since you mentioned a portfolio. I think creative majors are a little different if you’re asking if SAC will prepare you. I feel like creative majors rely more on talent and an “eye” for design as opposed to what a school can “prepare” you for. It just takes school to better refine that talent.

My gf graduated from Art Center in Pasadena and she had a great portfolio going in but the workload was very tough. My other friend is studying architecture at Sci-Arc and didn’t go to any school to “prepare” (as far as I know) but just spent a couple years working on his portfolio prior to applying.

Just posting here for the obligatory “I hate registering for classes at Mt. Sac.” Now I’m stuck trying to add chem 40 or phys 2a for 2 weeks, and they’re literally the only classes I need to transfer!!! ***

Hi, I will be attending Mt Sac this fall semester and didn’t know about the connect four program; so I notice getting classes was a bit of a challenge. I just registered today and all 4 of my classes are in waitlist position 7-10. What are the chances I’ll get into them?

And also:
Are there any programs out there that can get me early registration? I’m planning on joining Honors Program after the fall semester; will that in any way get me early registration for later semesters?

@whitelabelt: I know exactly how you feel. I had to attend two ENG1C classes for two weeks during Fall 2010. I had to buy all the books and do the homework for both classes!

@jlu624: I’m not familiar with the connect four program. You may want to check with admissions or whoever to find out more info about that. Just keep going to class and hopefully you will get an add code eventually. Like I said to whitelabelt, I went to two classes for two weeks just to hopefully get one of them. Do what you got to do.

@iDizzle I agree, of course! I found that their MAP plan, the (Mountie Academic Plan), to be an extremely helpful essential that organizes my transfer plan very well! I can imagine the transition into the quarter system being a bit more “difficile”, but how long did it take for you to transfer into UCLA? If you don’t mind sharing! I have many friends, majoring in the design field (graphics + industrial) go straight to the uni. so I was a bit in the dumps to know that I had to go through the whole transfer process in a CC. My major definitely relies on creativity, and I always believed school only refines your work into your own form of art.

I’m glad to hear that friends like yours, and many other people in the design field are working hard into their respective fields in their own structure of mechanisms! I guess I should rephrase “preparedness” with correct refinement in “preparing” me into the field rather than preparing me artistically maybe?
Thanks so much for the uplift!

@ Yezbel: It took me 3 years to transfer to UCLA. That’s only because I was working full time, 50+ hours a week and taking night classes at Mt. SAC. Balancing that many hours at work and a UCLA workload would be near impossible. However, I am balancing an internship while taking summer school right now. However, my younger brother(UCLA) and sister(UCSD) transferred within that “estimated” 2 years time.

Where are you planning to transfer to? Have you considered going to schools like Art Center or Sci-Arc? Art Center is ranked #18 nationally among design colleges. Although I’m not sure if they have architecture. I know they have environmental design though. Sci-Arc is ranked #1 in the U.S. Not only does #1 ranked architecture school in the U.S say a lot but Sci-Arc is followed by MIT, Harvard, USC and Berkeley in the Top 5 rankings.

Like I said, my gf didn’t prepare at a cc or anything before going to Art Center. She just worked on her portfolio for about a year. My friend who goes to Sci-Arc didn’t need to go to cc either. He just worked on his portfolio for about 2 years and did projects for scholarships. He’s interning at an architecture firm in Santa Monica right now and my gf works for a design firm in downtown LA. So those are like the “Ivy Leagues” of the design schools and should be considered.

I just checked my schedule for fall 2013 and realized in the heat of registering i accidentally registered for an engl 1c class that conflicts with the time period of my Math 180 class. What do i do!? I’m incredibly worried that i may not be able english 1c this semester. Has anyone been in my position? PLEASE HELP!

@ vtlord: The system should not even allow you to register for the class if it conflicts. Are you sure they conflict? You should have gotten an error or something or a message saying that it conflicts. I don’t think its possible to sign up for classes that conflict.
