Hey I was just wondering how much high test scores could make up for poor GPA? My uw is about 3.66 and I have test scores (act/sat) that are top 1%. I’m also NMF. The thing is my weighted GPA is nearly a full point higher than my uw because I’ve taken a huge number of AP classes. I just never realized how important the unweighted would be to colleges!
Assuming everything else is pretty good, do I still have a shot at getting in or is the GPA killer?
@ForeverAnxious it depends on how your non-A grades are balanced across your academic record. Generally an upward trend with the most As this year is the best (and with the lower grades not in regular non-honors/AP classes). Your weighted GPA sounds good and ACT so you should have a decent shot. Honestly it depends on the balance of your application because NU admits very holistically-- if a few Bs is your only flaw and you shave strong essays, test scores, activities, it shouldn’t really matter. But if you have only 1-2 minor activities, really generic essays showing little interest in NU, AND a lower GPA unweighted, then it’s going to snowball and hurt you a LOT.
If you get an email that the admissions office is currently reviewing your application, does that mean you passed the audition for the music school (Bienen) and are recommended for admission to Northwestern University?
Did anyone else receive a FA email, encouraging them to complete your FA applications?
However, it was sent via ug-admissions not via the FA office email. Perhaps I’m looking too much into it.
@CanadianBrigade no I didn’t get any email like that
@CanadianBrigade I got the same email! It said it was from the Financial Aid Office, but from the Admissions Office email…
0.0 Ruh-oh, this isn’t looking well for me lol
@Anduar3
Did you already submit your financial forms?
I didn’t get the email, so don’t worry. You’re not alone.
Yes, I received an email from the financial aid office encouraging me to submit my FAFSA, which I did, and an email from the admissions office stating that my application was complete and they were “pleased” to tell me they were reviewing my application. It also said I’ll receive a decision “by early April”.
Also got the email.
Do you think that the email is any indication of application status?
Could you post what the email stated?
Thanks!
"Dear xxxxxx:
Although it’s only February, it won’t be much longer before spring arrives and students receive their admission decisions. Our admission committee is working very hard to make sure decisions are ready to go.
I’m e-mailing to encourage you to complete your financial aid applications, the FAFSA and the CSS Profile (links below), if you haven’t already done so, along with any other aid applications required by other colleges or universities you may have applied to. Although the Financial Aid Office staff will not start doing decisions until much later in the process, it is our goal at Northwestern to provide an aid decision shortly after the admission decisions are sent. This will not be possible without the necessary applications.
Northwestern has a need blind admission policy, which means that a family’s ability to pay for college does not enter into the decision of whom to admit.
If you have any questions about the Northwestern financial aid process, please contact us at undergradaid@u.northwestern.edu. A counselor will be glad to help."
Who knows… though I don’t think it would make sense to ask for financial aid info if we’re rejected. But idk what happens behind closed doors so I guess we’ll find out in a month
@Hawkace yea I submitted my documents, the only thing left is my parents 2014 tax return.
Does anyone know if people from the previous years received that same email?
I submitted all of my documents except the tax return. Hopefully, that’s the reason why I didn’t get the email. Did you guys complete all of your documents?
pretty sure I did submit all my documents… my dad said they were all done which is why i was so confused when i got the email
I got that financial email, too, even though I had already submitted the FAFSA. Confused as to what this all might mean, if it means anything at all. I applied and auditioned at the music school. Would the school you applied to make a difference?
I received that email a few days ago as well, but applied to the College of Arts and Science. I did not send in my FAFSA or CSS yet so I thought it was just a reminder. My initial assumption was that they sent it to all of their applicants. In doing so, the school could earn some revenue from the submitted CSS profile even from those who were not accepted or waitlisted. From an efficiency and business standpoint, it seems very smart. But I am surprised to hear that it was not sent to everyone.
I got that email too, and I’ve submitted everything. I doubt it’s any indicator of admission status (too many of us got it, and NU’s acceptance rate RD will be crazily low). Maybe it was scheduled to be sent before all of our documents had been processed, so not everyone got it.
