****OFFICIAL Northwestern CLASS OF 2019 Discussion Thread****

It’s very normal to feel disappointed/ hurt/frustrated when you are waitlisted/rejected with great stats, and no one would offer you an explanation why no acceptance. We flew from CA for a campus visit and even talked to a couple of professors. I thought with son’s GPA/SAT, great ECs and voluntteringl he would get in, but no, waitlisted. I like to think it’s because the school is not a good fit for him. So guys, chin up, you guys all have lots to offer and any school will be lucky to have hard working intelligent students like you. Good luck!

Accepted- 30 ACT, unique EC’s, gpa 3.95 unweighted, Asian-American.

This has turned into a roast thread real quick.
sips tea and enjoys the entertainment

@econsftw Wait, so that person saying they got waitlisted because they so much better than all of the accepted students is not rude? K.

chugs down the rest of the mug

@wildcat2019 okay thanks. When can we expect the packet in the mail to arrive?

Rejected
SAT 2310 (considering only immigrated from China since Grade 9)
Subject Tests (800s)
Solid ECs
IB 43 (ps: took French instead of Mandarin, which is also offered at our school)
Not that devastated, cause I wouldn’t go to NU anyways cause no FA for internationals (Canadians)
But kind of frustrated…

lol @CaliCash i’m currently a sophomore at NU, and I know for a fact NU Definitely does yield restrict. They usually know that top students (the very best) won’t likely come to NU because they’ll probably go elsewhere. Alot of schools are notorious for this, schools like WashU, JHU, NU and to some extent UChicago. But there’s also students with just high scores that didn’t get in also because they didn’t shine out; it can be hard to tell which group is which.

Essentially, college admissions is a game. They want to admit people that they both a) know are qualified, smart, energetic and driven, but also b) that will actually attend the school. Yield percentages (% of students who are accepted that will matriculate) is a metric in college rankings. All these colleges are trying to play the game so that they’ll have high yield percentages.

You shouldn’t have to put people down to feel good. Maybe you can think that in your head, but it is hurtful to those who have worked for 4 years to get in.

But I’ll stop. I apologize for coming across in an arrogant way, but try to find ways to cope in a less demeaning way.

I don’t think it is fair either to claim that people who got in are under qualified since I they got in. Look im not trying to instigate a fight especially since someone just threatened someome to “just watch their step.” Come on this is CC…

And yet I understand these are difficult times for people in the face of rejection.

But to say people aren’t equal to you, no to imply it,
is plainly rude.

After I was accepted to WUSTL and people said the same thing, I felt nervous and hopeless regarding my top school. As if I wasn’t good enough.

So far I’ve been accepted to Pomona, Amherst, and many other schools I could list. But that isn’t the point. Look everybody was accepted because they wanted you there. Period. If people want to claim they were over qualified fine. If it helps them cope fine. But don’t step on everybody else because you feel better.

@CollegeIsAMaybe At least w/ ED, they came probably a few days to a week later (can’t quite remember, and they have a lot more to send this time!!)

Fills rest of tea mug with pumpkin spice latte

Straight up rejected. 3.7 GPA, 2300, Japanese. Interview went very rough though and the essays weren’t quite shining.

Not surprised. Sad, but not dejected. Congrats to all who got in. And for all who have been stuck down, let us rise again to fight another day.

Redacted. @CaliCash‌ seems to have learned something here (though I still don’t see the point in pissing on someone who is trying to understand bad news. Let them be upset for a while and rant. They’ll get over it.)

@adezar2‌ I’m sure any tier 1 or tier 2 school does the same. It makes sense from their objective viewpoint.

@CaliCash‌ You sticking with tea, or switching to ice to apply to those burns? ba dum tss

W/L students. My S was waitlisted several years ago. We were surprised. Long story short, he called to find out why he was W/L; accepted a spot; sent a letter expressing his strong interest in the school; and 2 weeks later sent a writing honor he had just been awarded and a rec letter from his supervisor at his volunteer job. He was accepted mid-May. There is hope…

@ccheennaa‌ But saying that those yield protected are overqualified doesn’t mean those accepted are underqualified.
I agree that if a college accepts you it want you there. (Lol, quite obviously)
Also, people aren’t equal to each other. I’m sorry to bring this up, but that is simply not possible. (Your comment actually reminded me of Harrison Bergeron- definitely worth the read)

@ikadiggit‌ Look at the stats thread from last year and reevaluate what your comment.

@adezar2 There’s a difference between being a jerk, and rationalizing your admission decision. Don’t belittle the accomplishments of someone because you didn’t get what you wanted. Again, I said I’ll stop.

Rejected from McCormick- knew it would be difficult to get in. My d seems to be alright with her current acceptances. Best wishes to all of you.

And hey lol, unless a miracle happens for me financially, I’m probably not gonna go to Northwestern. They are too expensive. So one of you might actually be getting my spot.

@Lanie49‌ I’ve read HB and didn’t like it–definitely not my style.

If someone was rejected from HYP, would this overqualified/underqualified thing still happen.

By implying one person is over qualified assumes that others are less qualified, and they are sub or under qualified. Nobody stated that qualified people got rejected. They assume they are somehow over qualified.

Yes people are not equal to one another, and yet they are qualified in their own way. To assert just because someone has higher scores than someone else suggests they are purely more qualified is absurd. Making these judgments without a full app is absurd. Maybe those rejected had sucky essays, maybe I did. Nobody knows.

@CaliCash This is how the game works. I’m sorry if you don’t understand that. You seem to be pretty insecure and cocky by lashing out at other people, especially when no one is really targeting you. You should realize that your admission was probably one of luck, and that you could have very well been in one of their shoes. It was not in my intent to admonish any of your achievements, but at this point I might be glad that you won’t attend my university.
