I was just wondering if they expect a domestic student and an international one that doesn’t have English as her/him native language to get similar scores on the English or Reading sections of the ACT, for example.
@10isMOM I think most of us understand the facts about the admission. I just hope that thread might make us feel better, not being way too stressed out.
@gutasaraiva oh haha oops sorry! Not sure about that but I don’t think they expect a domestic and an international student to get the same score but rather, an international student from Country X to get a similar score as past students admitted into Northwestern from Country X … sorry if that didn’t help >< it would be great if Northwestern did a “inside admissions” video thing exclusive to Northwestern
@epistemicuriosity123@gutasaraiva I don’t know if this is true, but as an international student myself, I feel like there is a higher standard for international students than domestic students, since the acceptance rate is much lower.
I’m so glad to be accepted into the Northwestern Class of 2021. It really takes a huge weight off my shoulders. Can’t wait to move up north where the winters are actually cold!
And on a side-note, I applied ed with a 3.96 UW, 4.3 W (even though my school does not report weighted so NU won’t see that) and 34 C act. My activities demonstrate strong passion in a specific area. From what I know, NU needs to find a reason to accept me, right? What sort of reason would they accept me for? Thanks in advance
@whatsamania That’s an awfully broad question. Admissions officers have to defend their decisions to a committee, so someone with a decent gpa, high test scores, and a passion isn’t going to stand out in a sea of applicants. If they accept someone, it’s certainly not going to be just for the previously mentioned factors if that’s what you’re asking.
@jaecha I’m just saying that when you have a competitive applicant pool, everybody in the upper echelon of stats and activities begin to blend together. I didn’t understand if whatsamania’s was attempting a humble brag or laying bait for a response, and I honestly think that there’s no way to accurately predict somebody’s chances of getting into a school by glancing at their GPA, test scores, and list of extracurricular activities. When applicants are within hairs of each other, how do you subjectively weigh who deserves acceptance? I’m sorry dude. I don’t really have an answer to what is the “key to acceptance.” Please don’t put words in my mouth.
Let’s look at the Class of 2014 class profile. 50% of enrolled freshman had an ACT Composite 31 - 34. 25% of the class had less than a 31. I can’t find their GPA statistics, but I suspect that they will show that most accepted freshman are in the top 10% of their class. Northwestern also has a commitment to diversity (geographical, racial, etc.), as do most universities, so they can’t just grab into the applicant pool and auto-accept people because of GPA, test scores, and ECs.
@lmaptqie Hey congrats yep I agree with what you’re saying … there’s no way of knowing for sure and it depends on what kinds of students Northwestern particularly needs that year @Vlau0707 I feel that way too … esp. with the financial aid being counted as a factor in the final decision … then again it’s rather understandable for them to do that
Thanks for the response, yeah I knew it wasn’t for teh previously mentioned factors, Just give me some examples about what they would accept you for, if possible.
I’m super anxious about getting the decision in a few weeks, and I’m sure we all are. I see that this is keeping us up at night, making us procrastinate from work while we watch “college rejection” videos… so relatable. From this thread, there will be a number of us who don’t get in and there will be some that do. And obviously, we all want to go to Northwestern because we did early decision. It’s going to be hard for some of us that don’t get in. Very hard. We’ll cry, we’ll not talk to anyone for several days, we won’t want to do anything basically. And I can already imagine that happening to me – and I do, every single day I overanalyze all the possible situations that can occur instead of studying for my exams. I’m sure several of you can relate to that. With that in mind, I just wanted to say something that I’m trying to accept. No matter what will happen on December 14th/15th/16th, we will find a way to carry on with our lives. We will find a college that is suitable for us. And I’m sure all of you know this, and have been told this before, but there is nothing wrong with hearing it again. We’re all competing against each other, and still, I’m so appreciative of the fact that we’re treating each other like a community that supports one another. That’s what we are, and I know if I get rejected, for the first few days there will be some inevitable misery. But I’ll get over it. And so will all of the others. We’ll find a university. We might even transfer to Northwestern. We’ll figure it out. Even if we probably don’t know each other, I just felt like it was important for me to get this message across. It’s probably a little cheesy, but it’s honestly what I need to tell myself every day. Good luck, everyone.
