Official NYU 2011 Transfer Thread

NYU’s supplement questions are always…uh…interesting.

I am in the Baruch Honors Program with a 3.5 gpa.

-Two finance clubs
-follows financial markets
-pasisionate for finance and highly interested
-some community service at library and soup kitchen
-strong writing ability

-interned at a boutique investment bank prior to freshmen yr in college-part of some sca program

-knowledgable of resume writing and cover letter, etc.

-very strong reasons for transferring and very strong essays

Do I have a shot a Stern?

I got a B- in calculus which I felt should have been a B+, I am sweating because I feel this will end my chances as stern places emphasis on math. I did get a 730 on math sat. Could I somehow explain the math grade?

Obviously I need to improve my ec’s, probably join two more clubs and try to get an internship or leadership position in a club. Also improve grades in spring semester.

It’s hard to chance applicants. There are numerous variables that are taken into account that it is hard for someone, especially someone who doesn’t work in the admissions office, to give you a realistic answer. The best method is to compare your stats with others. This is also difficult, as there is no specific numbers for NYU transfers. I have compiled the few applicants I could find from previous threads who were accepted and listed their stats.

I’m applying to steinhardt and after the first semester my GPA is looking like a 3.4, which is lower than I was expecting. I’m really worried about my chances now… I’m hoping I can do very will during the first half of next semester and send those grades as well…

Hi, I’m a first time poster, and a NYU Spring 2011 transfer student. I think I was one of the last people to get accepted, as I didn’t even get my letter until 12/21. The problem is that the school did not finish processing my financial aid package before winter break. I am taking out loans to cover my tuition and rent, but I can not get any of that started until I have my FinAid info. So here is my question: Does anyone know when tuition is due for new students? I am really worried that my loans will not go through in time if I have to wait until January to apply.

kmart153, I also had trouble getting into NetPartner. I called the FinAid office last week and they gave me a temporary password which allowed me to log in.

@TravellingAsh

According to the link below the date is January 5, 2011. I would call to confirm though.

First time posting on this thread, and first time on college confidential. I’m applying for the fall of 2011 as a transfer student. Read through all the past posts from those of you that applied for the spring semester and early decision, and thought this whole thread seemed really helpful, and wanted to be a part of that!

I am applying to steinhardt as a studio arts major, and have done everything and sent everything in, except my artists portfolio which I am still working on.

Best of luck to everyone else who is applying! I know my fingers are crossed!

@toniannoel, so you’ve done everything but the hard part :)

@benellis I know right? I would say I’m about halfway done, maybe a little more, but I was going to wait a little while longer to get some newer work in there from this coming semester, beings I am taking 3 art classes. What I have right now seems ok to me, but I need it to be really good if I want to get in. And then I still have to write my artists statement and everything. But I’m hoping to have it all sent sometime mid-january.

Are you applying?

Yep, to Steinhardt as well, but for Communications. I need to finished the rest of my applications (Common App essay and supplements), which I’m hoping to do before next semester starts. Luckily, I don’t have to go back to school until the 24th.

Awesome!
Yea, I have until the 19th before my next semester starts. I’m hoping I can get the majority of my portfolio finished before then. I feel like there’s so much I need to get done! Really nervous about getting in, too. I just can’t wait to have it all handed in and not have to worry about anything except for waiting. Even more than that, I obviously can’t wait to find out if I actually get in! Luckily I hear Steinhardt is one of the more ‘lenient’ schools for admissions.

What’s Stern’s/NYU’s policy on an additional recommendation?

On the site I see that it requires only one, but nonetheless in my explorations on CC I’ve seen people submit two and get accepted. Is there any official policy stated regarding such?

@MonkeyKing1

General rule:

Only send an extra LOR if states new and compelling information about you that is not present in the other LOR. It is not advantageous to send in two LOR that reiterate the same things.

hey those of you starting next semester–we dont sign up for classes til registration, right? and thus, no tuition bills until then?

@kmart

I actually called with that question. You can begin registering for classes once NYU has processed your enrollment check. Your tuition is due 6 business days after you register for classes.

@travellingash oh really? when did you talk to them? it seems i have a “you have to meet with an advisor” stop/bar on my account-what major are you?

Hi guys,

I am applying as a transfer student to NYU’s Stern for Fall 2011. For those of you who have answered this question before, can you help me? The question is from the supplement:
Please tell us what led you to select both your anticipated academic area(s) of study and the NYU school / college / program or the Abu Dhabi campus. What interests you most about your intended discipline? Mention any extracurricular or non-school-related activities or experiences that demonstrate your interest.

Regarding the extracurricular or non-school-related activities or experiences, does this mean that I can’t have an experience that is school related such as a club or a class?

Thanks!

Hi everyone. I successfully transfered to Stern this year. I’m open to answering any questions because cc definitely helped me and I wanted to return the favor. So ask away!

^ How many credits did they accept from you? How transfer friendly is the process of creating your academic schedule to allow your to graduate on time? How hard is it to get integrated into the Stern community socially?

Hey Rob,
I wanted to ask you questions as a prospective Stern applicant. Did NYU request your midterm report for your second semester at Fordham? I really would like them to see it because I have a feeling that I will do well and I have some prerequisites that they want in the second semester. Also, can you tell the prereqs you completed or were in the process of completing when you applied to Stern? what kind and how many writing courses did you take? Did you take a science class at Fordham? Also, out of your whole application, what do you think most likely influenced your acceptance into the school? -prereqs, gpa, college reputation, classes on math, and so on. Thanks!
