Official NYU 2011 Transfer Thread

I got my first semester GPA. It’s 3.925. I got 4.0s in Calc 2, Intro to Econ and Spanish and a 3.7 in Expository Writing. Is it a good GPA for a Stern applicant? I am looking for a soph transfer. Next semester, I am taking Labor Econ, Spanish, Linear Algebra and Differential Eqs/Financial Acct.

@ Rob

How much aid did Stern give you? What were your stats? How tough is the transition academically from your previous college?

I’m going to try to answer everyone’s questions as best as I can.
@MokeyKing They accepted all 33 of my credits. The transfer process itself is really simple. They will probably accept all of your credits no matter what. The problem is if they will count them towards your requirements or not. If they don’t, they are transferred in as elective credits. Keep all syllabi for your classes because you’ll need them in order for the school to determine if the course can fulfil a requirement. I will definitely graduate on time, and only have to take about 7 credits in Senior spring. The Stern social scene is something that I never tried to integrate myself in so I cant give you an answer to that question. I went to Fordham as in Manhattan and I’ve lived here for about 10 years so making friends wasn’t exactly a priority or neccessity.
@lolgirl They did request my spring grades which is what probably got me accepted. At Fordham I completed the Microeconomics, Calculus 1 (I also took calc 2), and part of the Writing requirement. As long as you can explain why you didnt get to complete a certain requirement, then it doesnt really matter, plus Accounting and Stats are usually taken Sophomore year anyways. My writing course at Fordham was called Composition 2. I placed out of the first course because of my SAT writing score and admissions essay. The writing requirement at Stern is two parts, Writing the essay and Business and its publics. If you take one writing course at your current school it fulfills Business and its publics, if you take two then all you have to take is the writing proficiency exam during orientation. If you only take one, you can either take Writing the essay (which would be really dumb because it is a gpa killer) or take the exam and submit a portfolio of your writing in order to complete the writing requirement. I didnt take a science class at Fordham and wish I did. Try to take one and all other hard courses at your current school if you think you can excel in them better there than at NYU because when you transfer your gpa starts over and if you have to take a course that will be harder at stern than it could kill your gpa. I think the combination of my grades in my math courses ( Calc 1 +2, and differential equations all A’s) really helped along with my Math SAT and Math 1 and 2 subject test scores ( 710, 790, 710). Stern loves quants.
@Maheen Your gpa is great. Taking math courses if that is what you also enjoy and might consider as a minor is smart. As I said Stern loves quants.
@batman Stern didnt give me much. I did get a Stern scholarship which I heard is rare for a transfer $6,000. I also have a differnet financial aid situation because my parents are divorced and I only have to put down my mom’s income which is way less than my dad’s. My stats were 3.88 gpa (3.81 1st semester and 3.94 2nd), 710 Math, 630 writing, 580 reading, 790 Math 1 and 710 Math 2. The transition academically was a little tough, but then again the sophomore slump hit me hard and I lost interest in school this semester but I’m back to my regular self now. Just realize that you will be competing for grades and though there may be those kids that dont really care about school and slack off at your current college, everyone at Stern is really smart in their own way and full of drive.

I can tell you all that though the transition was a little tough academically, I see myself excelling in this school. I already landed an interview with Goldman that I did yesterday and I’m pretty sure I only received the opportunity because they saw that I was at Stern. It is a big deal to go to this school because it opens so many doors for you because of the name, but it is up to you to land the position. Good luck!

I’m a Freshman applying for Fall 2011 (not to Stern, but to Steinhardt). I was wondering if NYU will request my second semester midterm grades or if I can send them to them. Anyone have any idea?

To Rob

Thank you very much for answering all my questions. They were very helpful. Unfortunately, even though I want to take science at my current school, my schedule for next semester is already packed and I can’t add it. My SAT math score is a 670 while I got a 680 on Math I. Although i love math and am considering majoring in it at Stern with business economics, I feel like my SAT scores will bring me down even though I got A’s in Calc I at high school, in Calc II in college, and most likely an A in Calc III which I am taking spring semester. Do you think I should send my Subject test math grade? Also, about the spring grades, Sterned look at your midterm grades and not final grades right? How hard is the writing exam? When did you hear your decision and how-through mail, email, phone? Once again, Thank you very much!

To Rob:

Sorry for asking you many questions but I was wondering what your opinion is regarding Stern’s grading curve. Do you think it is fair? Do most students have a difficult time getting an A? Are Stern classes really hard? Harder than Fordham, I presume? Thanks

Does NYU require the Secondary School Report and College Officials Report?

Here they say they don’t: [General Requirements](<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply)

Here they say they do: [Transfer Applicants](<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply)

…

^
I am going to submit the college offical report and secondary school report.

I am looking to transfer into NYU CAS. I was wondering what GPA would solidify a successful transfer. My essays, recommendations, and high school gpa is all very decent.

To those who are applying 2011 Fall transfer, Good Luck!! :)

This is a really random question, but who’s going to orientation next week?
Do we register with our advisor then?

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to ask if anyone knows how much aid they are receiving from NYU ??

How many people have been accepted to Stern who have, say, missed one prereq? In this case one English course.

Bump. I’ve seen on this forum a lot of mixed comments about the prereqs - some people saying that:

They don’t really care and there are lots of people who transferred to Stern who haven’t taken them.

They do care but if you explain why you couldn’t you might get let off.

Pretty much automatic rejection if you didn’t.

So, what gives?

I’m just really nervous because Stern is my dream school and I feel I’m currently very competitive (good stats, top 15 college, got into stern first time around, lottsss of leadership, amazing essay and amazing rec) and so would feel very sad if I got rejected because of…an ENGLISH course >_>

Prerequisites are imposed for a reason. They would preferably like you to complete all the courses before the time of the application, or show planned completion of the course (taking it in the spring).

Since you’re applying as a Sophomore (I’m assuming) they’ll take that into consideration. I would still explain why you were not able to take the course in the “Additional Information” section.

I see, thanks.

So that means that if I am able to explain with a good reason why I don’t have a prereq completed, then it might be a non-issue? Have you seen acceptances of people who were missing a prereq?

I have not, but that doesn’t mean applicants have not been accepted missing a prereq. If you’re a competitive applicant (which it seems you are), an explanation for not completing one prerequisite should be sufficient.

For example, I don’t think NYU is as strict as UCLA or Berkley in completing prerequisites. If you glance through a few threads in the UC forum, you’ll see gpa and completion of prerequisites are the most important criteria for admission. I believe NYU will allow some room for leeway.

What addresses do you use for the professor recommendation? This is the same as the address you give your High School Counselor to follow up with the HS transcripts?

665 Broadway, 11th Floor
New York, NY 10012-2339
United States of America

@batmanAA

Yes.

Send everything to that direction. NYU will sort it out.

thanks Mitch, are you a stern student btw?
