Im trying to write good essays

i know my college GPA isnt good. But hoping they will consider that i am from University of Rochester (very difficult school) and also majoring Neuroscience (very difficult, we dont get curves in this department at my school).
And I am applying for Summer Transfer and not applying for financial aid (hopefully will help me getting in).
some of my friends keep telling me that summer transfer probably bit easier than fall transfer but idk if that is true.
what do you think???

Hey, I am new to this and I am thinking about applying to NYU for the fall. I am a transfer and right now I go to Clarkson University. I have a 3.3 gpa and a 3.375 within my major. Is there even a chance they will admit me?

@kswharz

Which school are you applying to?

If it’s Stern or even CAS, you better have some terrific essays and extracurriculars.

Kswarz – what year are you? Have your grades improved much while in college, or is this pretty consistent?

@giantmidget

Sorry for the late response. It’s been a busy week. I’ll definitely get back to you on your essay in a few days. As far as schools, I’m still trying to finalize the list. I went to visit Columbia and fell in love it. But being realistic, a 6% transfer admission rate doesn’t look so good. I might just apply and have it be my reach school. In addition, my econ professor is an alum so maybe that will help. I doubt it though. Right now it probably is between NYU and USC with me leaning towards NYU due to the location. How about you?

@MitchAPalooza

After visiting the writing center at UM, and having a friend who got accepted at NYU but didn’t go, have a look at my essay and criticize it a lot, I’ve decided I don’t want you to look over my essay just yet. It’s in too elementary a form and you’d pick out a hundred flaws with it, which I’m already on my way to correcting, so it’d be a waste of your time. Instead, I’d rather you help me out with one specific part of it, if you haven’t already gone over it. I’ve PM’d the help I need. Thanks. And sorry about that.

As for other universities, it all depends on the study abroad. If I get accepted, I will only apply to NYU as I have a semester in London to fall back on if I get rejected, after which I will apply to numerous schools. As of now, NYU is my first choice, and if for example, I get accepted in, say, Boston University and the Study Abroad, I’d rather go on the study abroad. Plus, it gives me a chance to really tailor my essay for NYU.

If I don’t get accepted, then for Fall 2012 I will probably apply to Boston University, Northeastern, University of Chicago, NYU again, and Georgetown. I wanted to apply to USC, but it has more of a traditional college experience that I get even at UM, and it’s apart of the US college culture that I don’t really like. The whole frats and football culture. I’d rather spend time in a huge urban environment like Chicago or Boston. Which is why, BU is my second choice, as it’s often been said to be NYU but in Boston, with its city life experience.

I am applying for stern, I play college baseball now which I hope they like. Also my gpa in high school was weak but my first year in college it was a 3.1 and now my second year it is a 3.3, which means it has not stopped going up since high school. So I am looking to transfer going into my junior year. I am trying to put together the best essay I can just im not 100 percent sure what to write about in it.

Hey guys, chance?

Sophomore at the University of California, Irvine
Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.709
Essays: Pretty good I think
Rec: Good I think
ECs:

 • Currently participating in Spring in NY (a semester long program at NYU)
 • Interning with a Midtown Manhattan law firm while in Spring in NY
 • Pre-law Society
 • Indian Subcontinental Club
 • high school: co-founder/president of a club, hospital volunteer, track, band

Applied as a Junior to CAS

@kschwarz, I go to Clarkson too, if we both get into NYU maybe we can chill or something beforehand just so we know someone going in. I play basketball too, so if you’re on the Clarkson basketball team I’ve probably seen you before.

And @Mitch, I’m just curious, but what do your college stats look like? I’m guessing you’re applying to Stern, right?

@coolio

yeah that would be cool. as of now i doubt im getting in but ima try and do whatever i can.

to all,
please if you can give me as many pointers as possible on what i should be putting into my essay and what my legit chances are of getting into NYU.

thanks all

@giantmidget

I sent you back a response. One question though. Is the essay you sent me going to be your “Why Transfer” except you’re just going to customize it to NYU?

@coolio2244242

Stern. Stats are good but nothing no one else can accomplish.

@MitchAPalooza

Yeah, I realized that you could submit different essays for different schools in this thread.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/common-application/588703-cant-edit-common-app-once-school-has-been-submitted-2.html</a></p>

Thus, I decided to write school-specific essays.

I have a question

Do we really need to send the mid year report to them?

We all know that the grade for mid term may not be available until April

I want my application to be completed by April 1st. Should I just come to all of my professors in mid-March to ask them for the grade. Im talking Italian and some hard classes so I m worried that I may not get A in all of them.

Should I just do it?:

According to the link below the mid-year report is not needed.

[Transfer Applicants](<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply)

Does anyone know if I would get in? I have a college GPA of a 3.7 and a preprof of 3.8 with over 60 credit hours. My hs gpa kind of sucked because I didn’t try and I had a UW of 3.64. I knew I could’ve got a 4.0 if I applied myself because college is way harder than hs lol. I’m applying to CAS bio major.

@Mitch: thank you.

I called them twice but both times, the students answer.
One say yes, one say no.

@_@
Im in sophomore second semester.

I’m a sophomore too applying to be a junior during Fall 2011.

I emailed one of the admissions coordinators and they said that you dont need the secondary school report, but you do need the mid-term report.

However, the secondary school report is supposedly on the transfer checklist so I dont know what to believe.

Maybe if you are a sophomore trying to transfer in as a junior then you dont need the secondary school report? But I always thought they wanted it for proof that you graduated high school…

It seems that contradicting information is a normal thing when you call or email. One person in the same office might tell you X and yet call at another time and another person will tell you Y.

Requiring the mid-year report but not the secondary school report makes no sense. I would follow the website. The secondary school report is required by nearly all schools. It’s a bench mark to see how you did compared to your classmates in HS.

The mid year report can be optional. If you’re doing well and maybe taking a prerequisite that spring semester then it would be in your interest to send an updated transcript or a score card with signatures demonstrating your performance to date. If you know you might receive a low grade then it would not be in your best interest to send them. Only send it if they require it. Some schools send out requests for mid year reports. It all depends but if it is not listed on the requirements then in reality it is just “extra information.”

@ stickerrs

I don’t believe you need either. I called about the secondary school report and the admissions counselor said you don’t need to submit it and not submitting it won’t count against you, but if you have it that’s great too (if you look at the form it asks for very specific high school information and if you’re a sophomore in college like you or myself, obviously that information isn’t very relevant and a high school counselors opinion of you isn’t exactly up to date). The counselor I spoke to seemed very confident in his answer.

Your high school transcript indicates that you graduated from high school, so that takes care of that.

In regards to the mid-term report, I think it’s only necessary if the admissions office specifically requests it from you (if you’re on the fence and they want to see how you’re currently doing in school) like MitchAPalooza said.
