Official NYU 2011 Transfer Thread

Would it be ill-advised to only have a few teachers fill out the mid-term report?

I know that all of my physics profs will write great things about me, but I can’t say the same for my math profs (kind of my fault, I don’t go to many classes for Calc III and Linear Algebra).

i see
whom did u guys turn the College Official’s Form to?

Dean or your advisor?

I want to turn it to my dean but we never met in life @@.

My advisor is teaching me this semester but she doesnt have the school seal.

Cumulative GPA: ________ on a _________ scale, covering a period from ____________ to ____________
(mm/yyyy) (mm/yyyy)
This GPA is weighted unweighted. The school’s passing mark is .
Highest GPA in class
__ Graduation date ___________________

Both my dean and advisor are not able to answer everything in here. Should I just tell her to leave them blank.

@coolio: dont send anything unless requested… Meanwhile, try hard for your math profs. Remind youself that they may be the deciding factor in your application

@raja

I did some deeper digging after I got the email on college confidential, multiple threads for multiple schools says the secondary school report is not necessary…so I believe you are correct. It seems that only the high school transcript is needed if you are currently a sophomore.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/802244-secondary-school-report-question.html</a></p>

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/columbia-university/443177-secondary-school-report-transfer.html</a></p>

I also believe you are correct for the midyear report as well. It’s kind of hard to send in before the deadline, since midterms are happing now/in the next week, must be graded, and then there is spring break.

It states right on the website. I’m not arguing but the website clearly states:

You must also submit your HS transcript regardless of class standing.

The secondary school report is important because it measures you against your classmates. The report gives schools an indication of the school size, how many AP courses are offered, what is your weighted, non weighted GPA, ranking, etc. As you see it contains important information.

<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply;

@stickerrs

One of the links you provided was for Columbia. Not every school has the same policy.

@mitch

I realize the secondary school report measures you against your classmates, but some schools do not rank. So for some people that data would be unavailable. I personally believe high school rank is also not very important especially in transfer admissions when there is more recent data to look at, namely your college rank and grades. Also I dont know how much value admissions is going to place on an evaluation from a high school counselor who barely knows or remembers you. It just seems like a waste of time for every party involved to get this thing filled out.

Furthermore, there are different procedures for sophomore/freshman transfer applicants since sophomores have more of a college career to show than freshmen.

The admissions counselor I emailed is one of the Directors of Undergraduate Admissions not the student ambassadors who answer when you call the admissions office phone number.

Well it’s your application and your materials. Ultimately, you decide. But alright. I got your argument. I may not agree with it but I respect it.

@mitch

Haha, I guess I’m subconsciously trying to reduce the amount of paperwork I have to submit.

@ stickerrs/Mitch

I saw that info on the NYU page so I see where you’re coming from but like stickerrs said, we, being sophomores, graduated almost two years ago, so our high school counselors knowledge/opinion of us isn’t exactly up to date. Also, our GPA/rank/high school courses aren’t really all that important either, since we’ve been in college for almost two years. College GPA for those transferring as juniors definitely outweighs high school GPA, but you obviously knew that. When I called to ask the admissions counselor about the form I explained that to him and he said the admissions office understands which is why it’s fine to submit it, and fine to not submit it.

Also, I’ve submitted my app and on my applicant status page there isn’t a incomplete/complete checkmark box for the secondary school report. For high school transcript, college transcript, etc there is that box.

So yeah, submit it if you want, don’t if you don’t want to; either way you’re fine.

yo guys,

what did you do about the common app counselor rec form for transfer? My college’s counselor’s have near zero connection to students, it feels odd to have to ask them to fill up a form and review your academics

yeah that is the problem

I dont understnad why we should do it

I plan to turn it to my advisor, a very nice British woman.

However, she doesnt have the school seal nor knowing about my ranking in the class. The class means the entire population of sophomore student in my university???

rajas: how can you check your status??? and know what else u r mssing???

@ relish/moya

You guys should just go to a counselor and show them the form and ask them where you can get it filled out. I go to a big school too (a UC) so obviously no dean or counselor really knows the students on a personal level. For me, the assistant director of undergraduate school of social sciences just filled out the parts she could and put “N/A” or left the parts she couldn’t fill out blank (she said she’s done numerous college official’s reports and schools don’t care if not everything can get filled out).

@ moya

Once you submit your app and get the confirmation email from NYU they give you a NET ID and an N number so you can set up your account or whatever. Then you click on “ALBERT” and there should be an applicant link where you can see the “status” of your application. Nothing of mine has been updated yet (I turned everything a couple weeks ago) but they said it takes several weeks to update stuff so I guess that’s normal.

@MitchAPalooza

Okay, i’ve got a close to final draft essay. Sent it to your inbox. let me know what you think.

oh my god guys, HELP!

I wanna apply as a sophomore transfer to Stern; I’m in the process of completing the required courses. However, i’m taking writing seminar this semester, and I honestly cannot stand the course and the teacher. She’s completely horrible, and is dishing out B’s and C’s to me. I was contemplating withdrawing from this class, then i remembered stern has the writing requirement. What do you guys think? My gpa’s a 3.8+, and should be higher this semester (much higher if i withdraw from the ****ty writing class).

My sats are pretty good: 790 crit and 770 reading.

I have no idea what to do now. Continuing this class would only be a waste of my time (i’m not learning anything at all), and withdrawing would raise my gpa by so much.

I’m in a ****ty public college in NY.

Does anyone know if NYU ever asks to see Spring grades in making a decision for a transfer?

Spring grades are required via the midterm report.

Stickerss –

I dont see where NYU requires midterm report.

Midterm report does not contain final spring grades in any event.

NYU says they communicate decision in May – does anyone KNOW if they ever ask for Spring grades.

I’ve read in previous threads that for some people the ask for mid-term grades, well after the deadline.

In any case, I’m sending in mine because I have 4A’s and an A- this semester.

Right. According the official site and checklist the midterm report is not listed.

[Transfer Applicants](<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply)

Stickers is basing his/her answer off an email he/she received from the director of transferring. Sorry. Too lazy to look back what the name of the position was. This is just like the secondary school report issue. On the website it says yes. Some people have called and the students have said no.

Personally, I’ll go with what is on the official website. Now, to your original question I do believe the answer is yes. I skimmed through last year’s thread and there were a few uses who wrote they received an email requesting midterm grades.

@giantmidget

I received your essay. Very well done. Do you mind PM your email so I can make some grammar corrections and send it to you?

Giant - you even have solid midterm grades in every class? huh?

Mitch, thanks, the midterm report is problematic to me. I go to a really excellent SLAC. It is a great college, and I was fortunate to get in. But at this point, I want what NYU and NYC have to offer. Its difficult to say this to all my profressors. They are great, and have exceeded my expectations. But this is just not for me. It was the school for me when I was 17, but not now.

Its also how some grades work. I got the highest grade on the midterm in one class, a 93. That is an A- at my school. Given the grade distribution, which the prof shared with us, I expect to get an A if I continue my performance. But what would she say on midterm? Idk.

Maybe I am paranoid (OK, I know I am paranoid) – but I am concerned asking for a midterm report may, even if to a slight degree, be considered in my final grade determination. There is alwasy some fudge factor (class participation, etc), I have to worry not only about NYU app, but also ulimately law school.
