*Anyone from outside of CA would be dumb to go to UCSB *

Why? It’s a semi-prestigious school, right on the beach, nice warm weather, and characterized by countless parties. So if you’re smart and that’s you, then it’s not dumb at all to go to UCSB.

And as for the selectivity thing… well I’m not sure why they’re right there near each other with those acceptance rates, but it is what USNWR says. Maybe that considers the applicant pool?

NYU>>>>UCSB, period. There is NO comparsion between NYU and UCSB, none at all. In fact I doubt they even share much of an applicant pool amongst Cali people.

The UC that NYU has the most cross applicants with is Berkeley (roughly similar acceptance rate and SAT stats, and many CA people do apply to both).

ABirchIII-- The entire state of CA is not in decline because you’re comparing California Public Universities against a Private University. And that just in itself is telling you that CA is NOT in decline because you dont normally compare the two. If you look at ranks and ratings, the Universities of California are ranked the highest as compared to state schools anywhere else. The top public school is UC Berkeley. And if you DO want to compare CA Private Universities, last time I checked Stanford and California Institute of Technology are Top 10.

Cali girl here-
Don’t even bother comparing UCSB to NYU- to Californians, UCSB is definitely one of the lowest UC’s. UCLA, UCB, UCD, are all pretty hard to get into, UCSD, and UCI are mediocre. But UCSB is pretty terrible- it’s comparable to a CSU (California State school).
Any Californian in their right mind would not apply to NYU if they’re applying to UCSB. Seriously, it really is THAT bad. Reefer madness.
I personally applied to UCB, UCLA, UCD, UCSD, and UCI.

STATS!! continuation…
SAT: 2040 combined (will they take combo of the old and new sat?? i was confused by the website.- 2080)
SAT II: us history 760, mathiic 650
GPA: unweighted 3.42, weighted 3.82
almost all APs and honors

I wasn’t going to respond to the UCSB vs NYU posts since that kind of went off topic, but this post is fairly ignorant and I want to respond to it, so sorry to you NYU folks for going OT in your post. First of all, your claim of UCSD as being “mediocre” is laughable. It clearly has a position just below UCLA and UC Berkely, and has very strong undergraduate programs. Now, what do you mean “hard to get into to”? Do you mean acceptance rate wise? Well, here’s the [Fall '05 acceptance rates by UC](<a href=“Admissions | University of California”>Admissions | University of California). You can see they go UCB/UCLA, then UCSD, then UCSB, then UCD/UCI, then UCSC/UCR/UCM. Or maybe you think the students at UCSD, UCSB, and UCI are not as well academically achieved compared to other UCs? Nope, you’re wrong on that. Mean GPA/SAT scores of enrolled freshman (either entering class of '04 or '05 depending on the data I could find)

Berkeley: 1300/4.25
Los Angeles: 1289/4.12
San Diego: 1239/3.98
Irvine: 1209/3.73
Santa Barbara: 1203/3.82
Davis: 1170/3.84
Santa Cruz: 1137/3.46
Riverside: 1074/3.48

The UCs are almost always universally tiered UCB/UCLA, UCSD, UCD/UCSB/UCI, and UCSC/UCR/UCM, so I’m wondering how you came to such a different conclusion.

Sorry if I offended you in any way- that’s just the way it feels to me. I’m from a SF public hs and everyone pretty much judges sees and UCLA as the ****.
At my school, there’s what we call the UC hierachy:
UCB
UCLA
UCD
UCSD
UCI
UCSC/UCSB
UCR/UCM

UCSD and UCI are (at least to people in my school) both pretty crappy-- UCI has a reputation of pretty much accepting anyone b/c it’s so new, I’ve heard many stories about people being offered admissions to UCI even if they didn’t apply b/c they were rejected by some of higher-ranking UC’s. SB is obviously a party school and it’s pretty much everyone’s safety. UCSD might be strong in programs, but it does lack prestige of UCB.
Frankly, the stats of students at UCSD, UCR, UCSB, UCI, and UCSC are really low. 1200 SATs and 3.4 GPA’s?? These GPA’s are weighted too- that spells out to a 3.0 and below unweighted GPA. Their acceptance rates really explain it all. 50-70% is really high, perhaps not compared to other UC’s, but in the college realm in general. Most people in my school applied to UCI and UCSB/UCSC as safeties. Our teachers acknowledge that and warn us against applying to certain UC’s. They discourage the term of “UC hierachy” but it’s out there and they’re well aware. Besides, most people from my school enter a UC or CSU after hs.

rc251, I really don’t mean to offend you, but that’s just the way that we’ve always thought about these schools.

Yeah, sorry about the tone of my post, I’m just very loyal to the Gaucho Hehe, it’s all in good fun and I love debating the UCs, so I say something a little agressively it’s all meant in good fun, no disrespect to you personally.

I’m actually also from a San Francisco public high school (possibly even the same one as you), and I do agree with you reputation wise your list seems to be pretty accurate. One of the things that kind of annoyed me is that people didn’t give some schools a chance at all. I know I’m one of the few from my class that applied to UCSB, and while I tried to convince others to give it a chance, they didn’t. Most people have (in my view an inaccurate) vision of what the school is, and overempasize the party aspcet while ignoring the academic achievements of the school. In general, I thought UCSD was pretty respected (and one public high school in SF is a major feeder to UCSD), especially for the sciences. Most people applied to UCSC as a safety to Davis. I don’t think most people applied to UCSB period, although it wouldn’t be a particularily good one because it’s admissions is very competitive. And while 50% acceptance rates are low on the CollegeConfidential scale, they’re pretty high on the overall college scale.
